Funny things RICErs say (radically immature car enthusiasts)

Many years ago, I was at a car rally in my friend's Corolla Gti, and some guy we knew from our town pulled up beside us and revved his Nova 1.4 SR, so my friend revved up his corolla and bounced the limiter a few times. So then the guy revved his nova, but unfortunately for him he didn't know he has no limiter, so he blew up his engine he revved it so high.

I'm disappointed. My dad got a K & N air filter for my Impreza. Yeah, it's a bit faster, but it sounds like a ricer now. :(

Bad deal, or worth it?

So, a little bit of performance is okay, even though my car is slightly louder/raspier? Fine by me, then, too.

I just don't want to be one of the types of people who have a horribly loud car for "performance reasons." A little bit more speed and fuel efficiency is fine... But I definitely don't want to have a ricer Impreza. :yuck:

I doubt anyone would care/notice.

This. The Veyron is a impressive car, but it's not the greatest. Even TopGear said it and did a test with a R500 SL Caterham on TGTT.

Even if I had the Veyron money (including tires, fuel and everything else) I would get a GTR, R8 V10, Supra TT, Viper ACR, SRT Viper, Vette ZR1 C6, C7 Z07 Vette, RS4 Sedan/Avant, 911 GT3 RS 4.0, 911 GT2 RS, Subaru STi, Mitsubishi Evo, Ram SRT-10, Raptor SVT, GT500, ZL1 Camaro, M3 E92, C63, M5 E60, E63, F-Type, GT86, Range Rover, S2000, NSX NA2, R34 GTR, Viper GTS, Ford GT, 430 Scud and a LP-670 SV. And I'm still happy IMO.

and you would still have money left over for petrol, food, hugo boss suit, and a A list movie star girlfriend on aq 12 month lease, and still have change for beers from your veyron budget

Unless they magically work different from other cars, air filters don't really make any noticeable performance differences besides some more noise.

The ones who make videos claiming Hondas or some other small displacement 4 banger, are slower than something with a giant v8. Well Duh it's more than twice the displacement of the honda, we don't need a video to show us which one is faster in a straight line. Are they so afraid of losing, they go around looking for cars with tiny engines to "race"? These guys are true Radically Immature Car Enthusiasts.

Or people who think that larger displacement automatically makes for a fast car.
Just like 4 cyls there are a lot of under performing V8s that were not performance engines.

Got to love people who say 'I got a 454(or insert any big block V8) in there I will smoke you"
I have a friend of a friend who thinks his STOCK '70s Chevy pickup with a 400ci Small block will beat my '95 Cobra with a 302 just because he has more cubes.

+1 I have never noticed a difference with just a new filter. The washable ones just are more convenient.

Unless it's a forced induction engine, like the Nissan Skyline GTR has been known to gain 30+ bhp from just an after market air filter.

Like the Vaxhaul Nova 1.3 SR was faster than the later 1.4 version (same body model cars). I used to argue with a mechanic I knew, because he thought there was no way a 1300cc could be faster than a 1400cc. I had to prove him wrong with a few little drag races. Even when he jumped the start I passed him before having to change to 3rd gear.

.

I agree. I get that a lot. More cubes can be nice if you've got the parts to bring it together, which is the top end. Ford 400's are just 351 Clevelands with Windsor cranks...sounds like an awesome combination right? Everyone knows how epic both Windsors and Clevelands are....WRONG. The 400 was an absolute, and even as a Ford guy, total 🤬 box from the factory. The 351M (destroked brother) was even worse (I saw one of these in a '78 Bronco tonight, the guy was like it's got a 351M!! And I tried so hard not to laugh lol). It can be built to a nice performer but damn that top end was ridiculously restricted by a retarded cam, smog heads, crap exhaust, 2 barrel carb and low rise intake...just ew.

... The original air filter wasn't in good condition, but was quiet. The new ones in mint condition, but is much louder.

I've never once heard of an air filter making an engine louder.

EDIT:

I should say, that was actually legit. I've heard it float around as a rumor or something but I've never actually heard of it being real.

Unless they magically work different from other cars, air filters don't really make any noticeable performance differences besides some more noise.

I try to tell people that all the time and no one seems to listen to me. They all go and buy them anyways and then argue with me about how it made their car so much more fast.

Unless you're being meta, there's no reason to derail the thread with talk about your (dad's) Impreza. It happens enough on nearly every other thread.

Yet again: this isn't a chat thread.

Yeah, sorry, I'm just clarifying the differences.

I mentioned it because I don't want to be known as a ricer. If my car's too loud, I'm going to quiet it down again. So, I'll ask the guys who make fun of ricers whether a certain upgrade makes me a ricer or whether it's a legitimate "upgrade."

On-topic: some Integra rev'd unnecessarily while passing me. Then his bumper scraped the ground. He immediately stopped rev'ing and drove in another direction.

As with almost everything related to YouTube, steer clear of the Comment's section, and mind that there's an implication of "aggressive" lyrics.

How about the things they do... Like listening to really loud music, passing at stupid places, and crashing?

 What a idiot! There was 2-3 gaps that he could slide right in after passing one to two cars. But no...he wanted to beat them all, and then....BOOM!

And what's going on out there in Russia with these crazy drivers? Hope that any members here on GTP that lives in Russia are alright. :nervous:

Bingo! ;) But, I'll pass on a Hugo suit though.

You never had an injected or turbo car then, because it does make some a LOT louder.

I know many people who think you can get a twin turbo Toyota MR2 from the factory, even saw car dealerships advertising them. But it's actually a twin entry turbo, which is not the same thing at all.

Thanks for keeping things in perspective 👍. I'll be taking a little hiatus down to San Diego for the holiday weekend so I won't be moderating all that much. Keep those stories comin' guys!

For the sake of the thread I'll drop this bombshell of an experience on you guys. Driving north on the 405 heading to the NASA/CRS Gorman Ridge Rally I was getting pretty bored in the LA traffic. I heard some fart can off in the distance. I move up and in about 5 minutes I find the Holy grail. A 90's prelude slammed to the floor for that 'dope ass' stance, Chrome pink tow hook about a foot long coming out of the rear bumper and a huge front diffuser not painted to match the body. We start to get into the sh:censored:ier part of the 405 where slammed cars get eaten up for breakfast. I keep an eye on him through my mirrors so I would be able to witness the inevitable. Well, it happened. We came to a series of dips and cracks before merging with the 5 and I checked my mirrors just in time to see this preludes lip fold under the car from the bumps! Haha the look on his face was freakin' priceless! I think I'll dub that look the 'It's JDM yoooh sh:censored:'

No, and I don't care to either. I'm an N/A guy.

I laughed so hard at this

Injection yes, turbo no.

I prefer NA too, but it doesn't stop me buying turbo cars.
The loudest car I ever heard with an aftermarket or no air filter, is a Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg. I can't find any good video for you to hear, but I posted a video in the automotive sound thread of an AE86, if you want to hear something similar. The sound of that car is mostly intake.

Ok. Fresh from Kingstown, Carlisle.

Guy pulls up with an Audi A3, looks respectable. Not wearing Hoonigan/Monster/Stancenation T-shirt. So yeah. He looks in and is gawping at a Ferrari F430 in the dealership. I notice an MR2 (looks nice) I make the following comment

"That MR2 is nice. Black with red leather; great!"

Guy: "Yeah. The Toyota is (potty mouth)"
Me: "Yeah... If you're a badge snob. Nicely balanced, that Japanese OCD and its cheap for what it is."
Guy: "The Ferrari is nicer."
Me: "Yeah. But it's too big and powerful for Carlisle. Least the MR2 will be fun at 14 rather than 140..."
Guy: "I race. At a track. I only drive fast cars."
Me: "A diesel Audi A3... Caged animal right there."
Guy: "It's tuned. More power than the Ferrari yknow."
Me: "So why want the 'slower' Ferrari"
Guy: "Ferrari has won the most titles in F1."
Me: "But Audi has won more in Le Mans."
Guy: "But Audis aren't as fast"
Me: "Yours is. Apparently."

He just walked in the dealer and got mad when he couldn't sit in the F430. "Do not touch" said the sigh...

The loudest car I've ever heard had no exhaust. That's loud. Especially at 6,000 rpm.

I hate overly snobbish people. While I've never ran across one at enthusiast meets like car shows, I've run into people who seem to be busy and sort of blow you off (answer your question and walk away). Some of them are the nicest guys I've ever met. Last week I was talking to the owner of a Camaro funny car and he was more than happy to let me get up close and personal with it.

Oh ok, I was just talking about intake sound, as you were saying you never heard a car being louder with just an air filter. You should hear a Mitsubishi cyborg with no air filter at 8,500 rpm, it would surprise you.

That Audi guy sounds like a pure RICEr, more powerful than a F430. Making stuff up as he goes along, hoping you don't know any better.

Yup, badge snobbing at it's finest. Although, I personally would be gawking at a Ferrari more than a MR2, because I rarely see Ferrari. Then again, I always turn my head aften seeing a SW20. Anyway, what an idiot? I hate it when people say things that have no logic.
