Funny things RICErs say (radically immature car enthusiasts)

Two people in my college are convinced that the new Civic Type R will smash the Formula fords <1L Nurb record (7:22) when even Honda says it's only aiming to beat the FWD record which is 8:08...

It makes me lose hope when they seriously think a 300BHP 1300Kg car can beat a 200BHP 500Kg racer... :dunce:

My theory on why they think it will beat it is bolded. Even Nurburgring lap times are about as relevant as.. well... Nurburgring lap times.

Car makers like to use them as an excuse to swing their d**k around.

Indeed. Amusingly, it's that mentality that horsepower = speed that led to an argument between myself and a friend of mine, who was touting how much faster his Equinox is than my Civic, because it has a whole 32 more horsepower. It also weighs almost twice as much.

That's when you go to the local drag strip and race. I love settling things there. Sometimes even that's not enough though. Usually they find some kind of excuse as to why they got raped.

I could never get him to an actual dragstrip. Though there is a mile-long tarmac private road behind his house....

I'm not one to condone street racing but if one of you own the actual property the tarmac is on, then it's not technically street racing.

Otherwise it's not wise to race outside a controlled environment such as a track but we can't talk about illegal activities here.

I'm actually slightly interested in seeing just how bad a Civic would wipe an Equinox lol

^ I'd rather settle a score there.

Corners > straights

It's his land, so yeah. I'm too much of a safety freak to have any interest in street racing.

And I too, would prefer to test this on an actual circuit. But that would mean a trip to Mid-Ohio at best.

Yeah if he owns the land then why not.

I'm not a circuit racer, I find it rather boring. I get a huge thrill out of seeing how fast I can get my car to go in a set distance.

Plus:

If that doesn't scare you being behind the wheel, I don't know what will.

Same for me. I love testing the speed of cars around the corners in my racing games at least. Sure, I enjoy seeing how fast a car can accelerate in a straight line, but it's just not exciting enough without an extra element. I hope to go on the track for real in the future.

Honestly, circuit racing never did anything for me. I've ridden around tracks before and sometimes it can be a bit sketchy but otherwise I don't really care for it. I can have a good time though.

Seems like a reaction that a RICER would have to 175whp.

Seriously, I've seen people go "175hp? That's not a lot". They forget that hp isn't everything and need to take torque and weight into account.

I saw that on FB earlier.

My 200X trike has 18hp stock. Most quads make about 45 or so now.

They laugh when I tell them how much I make.

They forget it weighs 280 lbs and theirs weighs nearly 1,000.

Then they get mad when they get dusted.

Whaaa???

A turbo Honda should have at least 300hp.

B18C can get over 450whp if you replace the rods and pistons, and head studs.

I don't know, I was just making a point that there's people that think 175hp in a car is not a lot, because they forgot about weight & torque.

Ah.

Well torque doesn't really matter anyways, but weight does.

(175whp can be achieved from an N/A Honda motor easily.)

but don't some hondas have less than that stock? Of course, I guess the meme meant something such as a badly placed turbo.

Not for speed.

An F1 car has almost no torque, a MotoGP bike has almost no torque.

If you put a 200hp engine with 200ft-lb against one with 200hp and 150ft-lb, the result will be the same.
(Assuming same weight, gearing etc.)

Where the torque gives advantage is in a flat powerband, so it keeps a higher average horsepower.

In that sense there will be a small advantage, but then it can't rev as high, so you get a whole different set of variable with gearing that makes things more complicated.

Another example:

ZX6R vs RZ350

The 350 has less weight, and more torque, it should be faster right?

Well the ZX6 revs to 16.5 instead of 10, it makes less torque, but so much more often that it just powers away from the RZ.

Less what than stock?

You're saying that an Honda motor can easily achieve 175hp. I was just saying that some honda models have less power than that stock in response. Just trying to find an explanation for a turbocharged honda having only 175hp.

Ah ok. (Type R B18C has 200hp stock.)

Explanation? Maybe if it was a single cam 1.6 running a ridiculously small amount of boost.

Here's the ultimate ricer story: as my bus is pulling away from the school at the end of the day, a younger kid on my bus screams out the window of the bus to a guy in a properly modified, lifted Ford truck to compliment him and his truck. Well, some kid who drives to and from school has a Volvo Estate. This is where the ricer story truly starts: the Estate guy revs his engine as high as he can, and you can hear an exhaust note that can be compared to most Group B rally cars, but with at least two giant holes somewhere in the pipes. The whole bus evolves into a laughing factory.

On top of that, the same guy drives past my house in the early evening, and the exhaust sounds better than when revved at the redline, but still sounds terrible.
