Speaking of obscure ps1 racing games, 'Racing Lagoon' feels like a TXR plus RPG elements on PS1. It is Japanese only, so I have no idea about the story but the game mechanics are pretty fun
I specifically remember that the game has for its time, a very accurate and realistic created Shinkanjyo and Wangan as one of the tracks.

A proper, 90s-set JDM rpg would be the bomb.

CarRPG wouldn't really work very well though, one of the basic of RPG is grinding for better gears and items. Players would not like having to race the same track over and over again just to get better items since it's repetitive and boring. Shutokou Battle somewhat averts this as it's an large open world game where the starting and finishing points will be different in every race and thus every race is different. In Racing Lagoon however, it's not an open world game (technically it is, but I'm talking about TXR, Forza Horizon type of open world driving) and each part of the map has its own race course with its fixed starting and finishing point. This means if you're unlucky enough to have an encounter with multiple opponents like Zubats in a cave, you'll have to keep racing in the same course over and over again.

Yeah, I've seen it mentioned in the Forgotten Racing Games thread here. Looks pretty interesting, albeit the physics look a bit shoddy

I really hope this is a new shutokou game for ps4. I heard it's just for smartphone and if that's the case I'll be so mad. Bring us atleast a new initial d game for ps4 of even better if its a shutokou game, please game gods answer my prayers.

Speaking of other highway games; if anyone is looking for a good one with quality physics, try Option Tuning Battle Spec R for PS1. It has outstanding selection of tuner cars you're not going to find in any other game, and handling is very realistic. For instance, I like how you can't retrieve from a slide if you push the car too hard, that is hard-core sim racing territory!
On highway tracks you have to avoid traffic, that is the TXR connection. :D Check this video (it is time trial so no traffic appears though):

Nah I can't play games now where it's visibly a down grade from current consoles. I just can't do it.

The one thing I did like about it was after beating an opponent, you can steal his/her car parts, "Oooh, new shiney turbo? Mine!".

Also as an unrelated side note, I do like it that TXR adds American and European cars as well as family sedans, economy, and Kia cars. A wider range of cars means a wider range of play styles and more unique opponents

Haha, about the same as TXR zero. But building up car and collecting parts is where it really shines

For that matter, I would love to see European and American highways as well, but I clearly doubt they're going that far. For now, I'll be happy enough if they improve handling, and add some diverse gameplay, like drag racing or trailblazer game. Chasing down one rival after another only can be monotonous at time.

And with all those gangs available, it would be nice to have some recruit system for single player, which could give you some kind of side-missions upon joining a team or these diverse racing styles I mentioned above.

These games have always been about Japanese car culture exclusively.
I always thought it would be cool for a Euro or American studio to do their take on street racing culture. But I guess we just end up with crap like NFS. And modern car culture(in the us anyway) was co-opted from japan anyway so lets just stick with tokyo...

Speaking of studios, I hope Genki is not going to have any problems finding good publisher in case they decide to cross national border with this title.

I think the publisher is the only reason these games ever leave japan. I think in the past it was seen as a fast and furious cash grab. I mean TXR 1 had a trailer for FnF and crap from some car magazine. The dark pessimistic side of me thinks genki doesn't even want an international fanbase.
Sony might be the best be to get this game published outside of japan.

They'll be very lucky if they persuade Sony to publish their game, but I don't think it will happen. If I remember correctly, Ubisoft was the strongest publisher they have had so far. They worked on ITC together, so they may decide to work again.

Honestly I don't think Genki are stupid enough to build a mobile game up this much. It'd be the end of them, imagine the dissapointment from literally everybody. Although I'm struggling to see where they are getting the funds for a PS4 game, we'll see though...

Oh yeah, I got Racing Lagoon for Christmas haha. That game is amazing it's just so hard to play when you don't understand any Japanese

I don't care if it doesn't, long as it's ps4 I'll buy the Japanese game.

They made a bunch of educational games and horse racing games. also pachislot. I think the boss there got bored of easy money and wants to do something risky. Hell they built a real race car this summer.

I hope I like many others don't get shot down in a blaze of glory of its a smartphone game. With the lack of racing titles that hit consoles in 2016 surely we have to have a win at some point. We won't have to worry about the gameplay as we know it will be awesome, we just have to worry in speculation ATM until confirmation comes as to what it is. Would also love a ps4 kaido racer made, that would just be epic. I can say this and shenmue 3 and yakuza 0 releases are my number one priorities in 2017.

The thing that keeps me hopeful is the revival of GRP. GRP was formed due to the success of the Shutokou games and it ended up having the Kaido trilogy under the brand among other games. To me this is a sign that Genki is ready to step up to the plate again within the racing genre.

Besides their last Shutokou mobile game was a... failure? The service only lasted a year. Then again that was some weird RPG card game, I honestly don't know exactly what that was.

They know their fans want a console release, I've stalked their twitter for years.

Think it will be 2018 or 2019?
I predict a 2017 release.

The argument for console vs arcade vs mobile goes down to development costs and revenue IMO. Console games are more impressive certainly and will win them lots of their old hardcore fans back, but with current gen graphics it's going to be quite a costly project for Genki. Also it might seem like a large number of people interested here, but in the grand scheme of things it's going to be a niche racing game that caters to only a slim proportion of gamers. Arcade and mobile games will have lower development costs, but possibly makes up for it with their revenue. Just look at Maximum Tune series and all the F2P mobile games.

I don't know if it's possible, but best case scenario would be making a game that is easily ported to all platforms (PS4, XB1, PC, arcade, mobile). Just make the best looking game you can, and port it down accordingly to the platform. Just one development cost and you get revenue from all sources 👍

I used to play that too when I was bored with GT1/2. Pretty good physics as you said (better than GT1 even). Wide variety of tracks too - I remember it has circuit, touge and wangan (and one more location - I forgot). Career mode is so hard though and I don't have the patience to unlock all the cars :P

See the other thing to is where only predicting how far along the development is. For all we know it could basically be done and there just finishing up in time for a mid 2017 release. Or it could just be in early stages pending a 2018/19 release, we simply don't know. What I can't comprehend is how they have kept it under wraps as well as they have so far.

Oh and Genki, for the love of God, don't make it an online only game. Don't be as stupid as some of these developers who loose potentially half there buyers for making it to suit one type of gamer.

As far as I know they advertised Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2 in the United States a long time ago (2007, I think?), which may be logical evidence of a release, but I don't think that is the case here. Companies in Japan, like Genki, are exclusive over there since that is where they are more popular than the overseas countries. I am going to predict that it is a mobile highway racing game they are currently developing. Maybe they are trying to get as much more funds as possible right now, just give them some time to do so.

That's right and as mentioned earlier, I don't think they would be that stupid to make a mobile game when so many are hanging for a console return. There not like ea who tell you what you want in a game, GRP have made games in the past that consumers want.

While they do get more revenue that way, they also have to spend more money initially to make the game appear on multiple platforms. Conversion is also quite difficult, especially when converting for or from PC.

:D Patience definitely. If I remember correctly, it takes countless of two-lap races over and over again to unlock all the cars. I do understand they were trying to extend the gameplay by forcing us to beat all rivals with every single car, but without even minor diversity in how you compete in these races, it becomes repetitive quickly.

And what do you mean by one more location? I thought only circuit, mountain, and highway were available.

The best case scenario is that Genki either teams up with Namco Bandai (or Bandai Namco whatever), or have them be the publisher for the game. Namco Bandai already has a lot of experience with their similar Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series and being a much larger company with more resource, they could solve Genki's potential problems in licensing etc.

Heck, the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series has the entire Shutokou we know of and recently, also Shinjuku and Shibuya that was seen in ITC, but with a link between the two to make a loop instead of having to drive to street level and do a U turn like in ITC. It also has another section as well.
