no...do i use it to save the game so i can try multiple times to get a better car?? still kinda confused how all that works

Yeah, get the ticket off the person who is sending it. Then back up your game to your USB. Do this by quitting game going to save game data (PS3). Find GT5 game data, not the backup data. Then press triangle, then copy that to USB.
Then put GT5 back on, rip your ticket open, if you don't get what you want then go back to your save game data, but instead copy FROM the USB to your PS3.
Also if you want to open the ticket, but keep it, then create a second account and send the ticket to there, but before doing that, back up the save to your USB from the main account BEFORE sending it to the second account. Then when you have sent it copy from the USB on your main account so effectively you have two tickets but on two separate accounts.
Hope this helps, but if it's a little bit drawn out then just type USB backup trick on YouTube and you will find a video showing you step by step instructions.
