GLI is garbage... trading it in about 3 weeks...

You guys managed to derail a conversation that was already derailed.

Did we derail it even further or manage to put it back on track?

Anyways: The GLI isn't that bad... right? It's 200 hp turbo inline 4?
Oh well, just buy a subie... great things 24/7..

I still think a $9,000 transmission for a cheap car like a Mini is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard.

Check this out. $995 rebuilt transmission for a Miata: http://www.planet-miata.com/index.php?section=search-item&idn=209
^ for all years 1990-2005

Now tell me why the Mini trans costs 9x more than a Miata trans? Why not $5,000?

1.) Mini's aren't cheap cars, they start at $20,100 for a base Cooper and goes up from there topping out at something like $47,000 for a convertible JCW. So ya, not cheap what-so-ever. Questionable quality however is something I can agree with.

2.) The transmission wasn't $9,000, that's the transmission plus the parts and labour to install it and the delivery fee to ship it from where ever they came from.

3.) The transmission probably did cost around $5,000, but there was an estimated 40 hours of work to install one, at $125 per hour the dealership charged it's easy to see how it racked up the money so quickly. You basically had to disassemble and then reassemble the entire front of the car.

4.) The trans was so expensive because it couldn't be rebuilt, you had to buy a new one if it failed. Not my design, it's BMW's and more precisely Gertrag.

Sorry if my tone didn't convey it, I was just having a laugh ;)

This thread is already 12 pages of derailment. I don't think it can get any worse.

^ lmao nice.

And 40 hours to drop and install a transmission? What are they doing for 35 of those hours?

Explain how its fat and cheap? Its the same K-series motor with a different displacement and other parts. Its ridiculous that it only gained 4hp with a 400cc increase, but it should still have potential (after a head swap to run a real header :().

So you can swap a Mini trans in five hours?

MR is ultimately better for many reasons. MR cars have better braking, more rear traction, mass is more centrally located, and less parasitic power loss.

FR is easiest of all to work on. MR takes more finesse to control, and RR is hardest of all. I like things to be simple and easy.

FR is generally more stable at high speed, compared to MR. Less twitchy (also depends on wheelbase though). Styling wise, I think they are better proportioned as well.

I'm surprised to see so many people on this forum liking the thought of a mustang. I hate mustangs. Especially that body style. Fast in a straight line, maybe, but horrible gas mileage, not fun around corners, and it's just another mustang to join the 500 that I see on any given road on any given day. You could get a used sti or evo for 20 grand. Much more fun, much more room, faster, better gas mileage, idk. I just don't see the appeal of a mustang in this situation.

Edit: I actually don't mind that particular gen mustang, I misread it the first time. That said, however, the new ones look SOO much better in my opinion, I don't think I could spend money on anything less than the current gen.

Edit #2: You could get a used M3 for that price too. Or a newer 3 series.

Dude. Just stop.

For "20 grand" you can pick up a 2011+ V6 Mustang that while not quite as quick as an Evo actually gets better fuel economy, is perfectly roomy in the front at least (kids are fine in the back as well), handles perfectly fine (and better than fine after you throw any sort of handling pack at it), and comes with a warranty.

Compare to turbocharged 4cyl wonder that's been thrashed all its life.

I could never own a V6 Mustang, no matter how good it is. I need the V8 or else I'm sticking with 4cyl.

I'll never understand that viewpoint seeing as the Mustang wouldn't exist without 4/6cyl variants. The guys who say it's "wrong" don't realize that the Mustang was meant to have a 6cyl. It was meant to be an affordable, sporty, stylish vehicle. Massive power wasn't part of it (though it became and has remained available).

the word Mustang invokes feelings of speed and power. Muscle. V8. It just makes complete sense. V6 Stangs have and always will be sold primarily to women.

Even though the 2011 V6 has more power than the 2009 V8?

I'd still take the 2009 V8 if both were offered to me for free, yes. There is no replacement for displacement. I'd rather have a 2011 5.0 though.

Then how would it feel when you get beat off the line in a car sold primarily to women?
