For the price of the 4C, you could buy a used Lotus Elise, a used VW Golf V GTI, and still have money left to tune the Elise.

Yeah, a USED elise. And last time I checked there are more Alfa enthusiast around then Lotus ones and no stock GTi has 240hp at 900kg dry weight.

For that price you could by a used Ferrari F355 in germany lol.

Comparing used car prices with new car prices makes no sense.

Well, if you were spending the money, wouldn't you want to consider all the options? The 4C reminds me of a morepowerful Elise, with more technology. I'd rather have a GTI to commute in and an Elise to drive on the weekends.

a Used Elise with Low miles run almost 45 Grand dude.. YES you can find a High millage Elise for 23k but who in their right mind would really deal with the Problems of such a car like that? A Lotus especially

2006 Elise with 90k Miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Load...6425647?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item43b8fd6f2f

2008 Elise with 6000 Miles @ 45 Grand http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2008...4739903?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4ac224513f

Which ones?

I can think of Alfas with separated light units (Brera, 159, SZ), but never before one where they've clearly had a space for some proper lights but put aftermarket-style plastic things in their place.

I meant the ones like you mentioned. The 159 lights do in a way follow a similar idea, they could fill that gap with a whole glass cover but instead have the light clusters unhoused on a matt black background.

Yep all they are famous for is making an affordable FWD car that has that same old ugly nose on it. It's nice to hear they changing gears a little bit, though.

So your point? Alfas History was always about Sports cars, they made the best sports cars ever, cant say that about BMW or Benz. The last BMW Sportscar that has been worth mentioning was the Z3

and You forgot about the 8C

I call your argument, and raise you this:

Lotus Elise Supercharged, $35,000, 2300 miles.

Volksagen Golf V GTI, $15,000, 69000 miles.

That adds up to $50,000, which is less than the $57,000 the 4C would cost, assuming that we can just convert the cost given in the thread title. $7,000 is mroe than enough to cope with the added maintenance and insurance costs.

Are you saying Alfa has a better history of sports cars?! Z3?! I have never heard Alfa mentioned in all of the car conversations I've had online or friends. I wonder what you are smoking on...

Alfa Romeos are for petrolheads. They have a history of great sports cars, though they have typically had questionable reliability. 6C, 8C, Giulia Sprint Speciale, Giulia Super, TZ2, Giulietta, Duetto/Spider, GTA, Montreal, Alfasud, GTV, Sprint Zagato, and the new 8C, to name some of their more famous sports cars. Convinced?

Oh really? BMW M3, M5, M6, Z3, Z4, Mercedes CLK 55 AMG (My car), C63 AMG, E Class AMG, etc. Alfa's are OK, but not my cup of tea.

You'll find that some of the most desirable small sports cars in history are Alfas.

Cars like this:

...are very desirable for classic sports car collectors. For good reason. They're great cars.

While the current Alfa may not have the same cachet as it used to, there are many who still remember the marquee's heyday in club racing and saloon racing with great fondness. Even those who were not around at the time. :D

I'm not saying Alfas are better, just establishing that Alfa Romeo has a history of sports cars. Also, you should make a thread about your CLK55, that's an awesome car!

If i were to spend +40k € on a car I would definfitly not by a used one. I could buy a Ferrari Testarossa for that money, but maintance costs would drown me.

Comparing used cars with new cars is unfair. Im few years used 4c's will be around so your argument is not valid.

The GTi you mention is a FF and barely a true sports car like the 4c.
Also its a Volkswagen, Alfa has a lot more racing heritage. Alfa was the first team to ever win a f1 championship. VW?

Is it worth mentioning at this point that without Alfa Romeo, there'd probably be no Ferrari? Only you can probably guess what the first Ferrari-branded race cars were...

It's probably also worth mentioning that BMW's significant sporting history is relatively recent - the 1970s or so - and save for the odd SL model, Mercedes is better known for boat-like diesels saloons than its AMG models, the first of which also appeared relatively recently (the first AMG production model only arrived in the 1990s). Alfa, on the other hand, had been making desirable sports models since the 1930s.

Lesson here is: Not knowing a dime about Alfas probably isn't the best basis on which to form an opinion

Actually only Ferrari, Porsche and maybe Ford/GM habe a richer racing history then Mercedes. They build 600hp race cars in the 30'ies. Silverarrows were unbeatable till Mercedes pulled out of Racing in the 50'ies.

I was talking more about road cars, since that's what the discussion is on (you mention Ferrari - again, Ferrari as a road car and race car company likely wouldn't exist had Enzo not raced and prepared Alfa Romeo Grand Prix cars back in the 1940s - that's quite a string to Alfa's history bow).

Mercedes' racing history is longer than virtually anyone's (they did get a good head-start, as the company that invented the car...) and virtually unsurpassed, but their road car history has long been about big, comfy saloons rather than sports cars, at least until the 1950s and 60s when the SL range appeared.

And even then, it was another 20-odd years before AMG surfaced, which seems to be MisterWhiskers' barometer of sportiness.

The point is, to dismiss Alfa as...

all they are famous for is making an affordable FWD car that has that same old ugly nose on it.

...is to talk quite impressive levels of baloney, and demonstrates very little knowledge of one of the most illustrious car brands in history. Whether their current lineup is anything special (and I've driven the Mito and Giulietta - both nice cars in their own right) is largely irrelevant.

A little history lesson in this case wouldn't hurt I suppose, here's just one example.

Which says more about you and your friends perhaps than it says about Alfa, it's perfectly possible for you to don't mention, like or know anything about Alfa but saying that's the proof it isn't relevant is the other way around.

As for the 4C, these new pics prove that something was definitely lost in translation from concept (gorgeous) to production car (slightly meh, an Evora looks better to my eyes), and it isn't just due to those lights, a real shame.

I'm rather hoping they've seen the post-Geneva reaction and think "y'know what?... let's go with the old ones..."

For the sake of how much I love proper Alfas I hope this car is a success and hope it drives awesomely. I just think at the price it's going to be it has no chance.

Just like the Evora has no chance competing against 911 even it drives as good if not better than a 911.

Oh, I now get what you meant. Yeah, after Mercedes pulled the plug out of their F1/sportscar program in the 50ies, they became a bit "boring",it took them almost 40 years before making true sportscars again.
But you are wrong if you think that Mercedes didn`t create sports cars before the 300SL. The WW2 just hit them hard. Pre WW2 Mercedes build some of the best sport cars in the world. And their race team was by far the best in the world, this contributed alot into their engine and chassis development.

I also totally aggree with you on Alfa... How can any car geek claim that Alfa isn`t sporty :(

Edit:

I really hope that they change the headlights... Totally ruined this car for me.

And in proper Alfa fashion, while you are having fun tearing up the streets, it should break down at least once a week. At least. But it would still be fun.

Woah, the headlights are actually being sold like that?

So... Alfa don't want people to buy the car now? Ok, ruining it like this, is worse than selling the car without and engine, or doors, or wheels, its catastrophic if it'll go on sale like that.
