I was too scared to post on this site because of the premium/standard rage. But I noticed not everyone is committing suicide(joking) about the situation. Glad to see there are still positive and logical thinking posters. Now, I would like to share my view on the premium/standard cars situation.
If you look at previous GT games you'll notice a pattern.
GT - less than 200 cars (first GT game on the playstation)
GT2 - more than 500 cars
GT3 - less than 200 cars (first GT on the playstation 2)
GT4 - more than 500 cars
For GT5 I believe originally (or really early in development) there was only going to be those 170+ "premium" cars or as much cars that are finished before the deadline which eventually ended up being 200+ cars. It would look like this.....
GT5 - less than 200 cars (first GT on the playstation 3) but eventually ended up like this......
GT5 - more than 200 "premium" cars (first GT on the playstation 3)
You'll notice that as GT moves over to the next console the fewer the cars.

Good thinking. Now I think i know why they delayed GT5. and the answer is GT on PSP. they probably had the time to build 200 cars. but GT PSP delayed GT5. But not only becaus the creating of GT on PSP. PD wanted a system where you can change cars from (PSP to PS3 & viceversa) so they needed the same cars in each game. So they added roughly +600 cars. to have that feature work in the games.

It is a good point, but you have to think about the development times as well. If i remember rightly GT3 had about 300 cars and was released just over a year after GT2. We've been waiting for 5 years for GT5 now so it's not likely that they were ever only going to include 200 cars with that much development time.
Yes but in that time span they have also developed GT5p, GTPSP and Tourist Trophy.

  • GT5P was "developed" as a natural part of the overall development of GT5. As such, it took nothing away from the scope and scale of GT5.
  • Tourist Trophy took a dedicated team just 10 months to make.
  • GTPSP mainly uses assets from past games and current GT5 development, just scaled down. Sure, it's not easy to make a game like that, but I would have thought a small team took just a few months.

The time it took to model cars in GT3 is substantially less than the time it takes to model a premium model car. It is a simple law of progression. As consoles gain a greater capability to render more detail, more detail actually needs to be created. Thus, whereas in GT3 all that was required was a single mesh with textures, the premium models in GT5 consist of panels corresponding to real life and so need much more detail to be modelled in.

Thus, the jump from PS2 to PS3 with a 5 year dev time sounds reasonable to me. Also, you have to understand the jump from PS1 to PS2, and correspondingly GT2 to GT3, is not as great as that between PS2 and PS3. In GT1 and GT2 models were simple meshes with well made textures. GT3 followed the same principles - with the exception of convertible and Le Mans cars in GT4.

You actually bring up a good point. Which is interesting considering my favorite GT game was GT3 which had less than half the cars of GT2.

Right now I am looking at GT5 in the mindset that the 200+ premium cars are part of the core GT5, and the 800+ standard cars are an additional 'Classic GT' mode.

I didn't have enough characters to complete my thought but you finished it off perfectly(you literally stole my thought). I also believe GT5 will consist of those 200+ "premium" cars and the remaining 800 "standard" cars will be part of a "Classic GT mode".

Exactly.

I could see that happening? So with that do you think that the standard cars will race with other standard cars? Premiums will be matched up with premiums? i can see this happening.

And yet some interviews says GT5 final will be very different from GT5P. I at least, cannot say with certainty that this is how it is. PD and Sony might have stated so in an interview, but then again, they have stated loads of stuff over the years that didn't always was.. ehmm.. adjustet to the truth.

Thats about a release day now for GT5 instead. I would rather have that.

Same as above, though this one might work together with GT5 in a way we yet know nothing of.

👍 👍 They also did GT5P and GT PSP

RACE AGAINST THE WORLD, ONLINE
· Online racing evolves in Gran Turismo 5 with robust racing options that are shaping up to deliver the deepest online racing experience available.
· Players can join in on public races featuring up to 16 players at once with text and voice chat, or host private races with lobbies supporting up to 32 players per lobby.

OTHER FEATURES
· Players who own Gran Turismo PSP and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue can transfer cars unlocked in that game directly to their garage in Gran Turismo 5 for use in Arcade Mode through special cross-talk interoperability.
· Gran Turismo 5 will feature full PSN Trophy support, making players’ accomplishments that much more satisfying.

ENDS***

So, what does "Lobby" stands for? Does this mean we can expect races of 32 players in Private Lobbies, or is it just a way to put 32 players in lobby prior to the actual race?

Lights, please!

How is that not different from GT5P?

I think 16 players will be racing and the remaining 16 can chat or enter spectator mode while being in the lobby.

+1 I can see this being used for a tournament. The last 8 get eliminated and the 1st 8 move on for final race.

Amazing Attention to Detail!!!

I think this is the real deal... Never crossed my mind.
Premium track for only premium cars.

So, if that's true, we can't take a Lamborghini Countach around the 'ring

That doesn't make sense

no, it just means you're using a premium car on the track, I think. Maybe, if you have all premium cars, the track also becomes premium, but I think it's more, if your car is premium it'll list "premium" under the track name

nah 👎 that would be very unacceptable...

first of all, you are misunderstanding the post you are quoting.
second, what you are suggesting is very unacceptable.

"Premium" on the screenshots are only refering to the car the player is selecting.
that would be the best guess.

I'm glad you brought this up. I started playing GT with GT4, so I wasn't aware that the number of cars fluctuated with the new systems. It clarifies a lot for me.

yup. the number of cars more than tripled from GT1 to GT2 and nearly quadrupled from GT3 to GT4. maybe GT6 will have 5 times the cars than GT5. (5000cars? that would be 4000 cars that have never been in a GT game before, if the 800 standard cars are indeed all the cars from every GT game)

so does anyone want Georg Plasa's JUDD powered Bimmer as a Premium DLC car?
(went off topic to change the mood a bit)

GTPSP mainly uses assets from past games and current GT5 development, just scaled down. Sure, it's not easy to make a game like that, but I would have thought a small team took just a few months.
Kazunori mentioned in a few interviews that GT PSP development was so difficult that there were spans of time the entire team stopped work on GT5 to focus on GT PSP.

By the way, 👍 on Photo Mode returning. Take nothing away, just keep adding. Cars, tracks, everything.

I gotta admit, I really can't wait until November after seeing that. :D

The Top Gear Test Track looks like it could be a really good drift track. What do you guys think?

When you think about it, wasn't Gran Turismo PSP mostly an appetizer for GT5? We were to use GT PSP to possibly be able to share cars with others, right? So it would probably make sense that we see such upscaling of the cars. Most of you know how I think- Tourist Trophy and Gran Turismo PSP were merely titles to derive elements from to speculate on Gran Turismo 5. What are some of the elements? Tourist Trophy: damage (though not vicious) and interior (on-bike, in this case) views. GT PSP: interior views, most of the many cars we'll see in GT5, online play, and more. So I would think that Gran Turismo PSP has given us a pretty good indication of what GT5 will provide in addition to Tourist Trophy.

I'm going to discuss the cockpit view in a different thread. Still, I think this is smart by PD to include Gran Turismo PSP and GT4. Not a popular decision, but at least this would take the load off of PD in making GT5. I don't think it's all-out laziness unless a game as beautiful as Gran Turismo 5... has the same old cars from GT4 and GT PSP. Perhaps an unrelated element, it would be a nice look back to see some of the old-style cars in ten+ years of the GT franchise.

Again, this is not a popular decision to not have every car immensely-detailed. I'm sure PD will try to find some ways to make the cars lovely even despite going with low-spec cars. Pull some strings and stuff. We need to see future game shows and stuff to see the further progress of GT5.

It's more likely that the 200 premium cars will be joined by another 400 new/remade premium cars for GT6 and if they can only make 50 a year we will be in for a long wait.

well, what usually happens is that PD finds a way to decrease the amount of time to make the cars on system. like in GT1 the cars took about a month, but with GT2, the cars took about a couple weeks. With GT3, cars took about a couple months to make and in GT4, it, again took a lot less time to make the cars, and thus, more cars. I would suspect the same will happen for GT6. I wouldn't even be surprised if all 1000 cars in GT5 become "Premium" models in GT6.

Did you remember back in the day Kaz said they were working on the HSV-010 GT?
And now he said he didn't know if it will be ready for the game...
Shows that they really work a long time at a car.

I want the game in November,
and sometimes I'm afraid because of all the whiners here,
they would delay the game to add more and more features or cockpits..
But than the game would never release, because there will always be whiners.

Guys I just thought of something about the Top Gear Test Track. When the Stig puts in lap times of various cars, he does so using a standing start. How are we meant to try and beat the Stig's lap times with a rolling start? That would mean we have the advantage because we are already going past the start line at some speed. We need a Standing Start! If we don't then the Top Gear track wont be as fun as I thought :(
