What is a balaclava?

I don't seem to have the same issues IRL with stuff... mostly with video games... in fact IRL I tend to have bad peripheral vision :guilty:

When I sit down to play a game I can literally feel my eyes relax and sort of "wrap around" the screen (can't explain it)... it's almost as if I have peripheral vision turned off IRL :D

Last time I went karting my visor didn't snap shut properly and caused a lot of condesation on the lower part... it didn't bother me much...

Come on!?? What is balaclava? Dude!?

That's a balaclava:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balaclava_(clothing)

"Racing drivers must wear balaclavas made of fire-retardant material underneath their crash helmets in order to improve protection in case of a fire following an accident, and commonly cover the nose and mouth to reduce inhalation of smoke and fumes."

The visor condensation happens a lot, actually, that's ok too...
I don't know how you go karting and don't know what a balaclava is, but anyways...

Flame retardant balaclava, what drivers have on underneath the helmet.

Ah I see! I always just call it a head sock :)

Sadly, I must concur.

On one particular note however, we'll have to give it a go in 720p as opposed to 1080p in the hope that the texture streaming routines & related bandwidth requirements might reduce pop-in. It depends on the engine but it could possibly also help with the frame-rate too. I noticed Amar's note that not streaming personal MP3 playlists seems to help with RAM usage (can't remember exact words) though I can't comment on this personally (other than it may depend on how big your MP3's are). 👍

I have to wonder if it would though... I thought the upscaling process happened in such a way that the entire image was processed already and just passed off to be upscaled and AA applied...

When I read his suggestion to turn off MP3 it sounded more like a "might as well, doesn't hurt to potentially free up some memory" than a "makes things better to have mp3 turned off" sort of thing...

I should have just googled it :) For a second I thought you were trying to say baklava!

I have only ever heard of them called head socks... I don't race in a league or anything so maybe it's just not a term I have come across (and a lot of the time I drive electric so maybe the headsock wasn't actually flame retardent for me?)

They must have thought the 220 or so premiums would not have been enough cars (after such a long wait), so they thru in the standards. Consider standards to be the (Tekken 5 arcade) approach to last gen content.

Shadow flickering will not dissappear until the ps4 or ps5, every single game on consoles with dynamic light/shadowing seem to have flickering. Uncharted 2, Killzone 2( probably 3), MGS4, and many more, have shadow flickering.

It is inescapable, no use complaining about it, it will not go away until next gen at the very least.

I don't recall it being an issue in GT5P, FM3 or Dirt2...

The difference here though is the dynamic lighting, I personally don't think it matters to the vast majority of people, some of the worst examples of shadows have been the call of duty games and it hasn't hurt them! lol

So much crying. It's really getting old. And the most annoying part is ALL of the crying and whining is by people who don't know anything about the game and haven't played it. Everyone who's played it loves it, so...umm...yeah, let's just wait until we've played to make our judgements.

By the way. There are NO standard tracks. The are two versions of the LeMans track: 2005 and 2009. Both, however, were recreated in GT5. If track had been ported, we'd have Infineon and El Capitan, wouldn't we? Kaz even said that Laguna Seca was completely remodelled and is probably the newer version of the track with the new run-off sections at the Andretti Hairpin and turn 11. All the tracks look awesome, all the cars look awesome. The game is the closest thing you're going to get to real life. Quit complaining about every little thing.

Hey, I'm making observations here, the "crying" and "whinning" comes from your interpertation when you read, I can't write intonations, don't give me intentions I don't have, how you feel about what I wrote belong to you.

You are right, Madrid looks just as bad as La Sarthe and it's a brand new circuit, I guess I misinterpret the "2 years to model a circuit" with "it will look great", it's an amazing game, with alright graphics, photomode personnaly doesn't count.

That's ok. Regardless, you should wear them at all times when racing go-karts, even electric, specially if you don't own a helmet and have to borrow from the track managers.

Yes I always borrow, so always headsock... it's a rule at the tracks I go to that you must wear a head sock. They like it becuase if you loose yours they can sell you one for $3 :)

Rally mode in action

That is AMAZING!

And even though it's a bit odd to have the map in the middle of the screen, it didn't seem to bother me...Maybe it is even useful, I dunno.
Even so, does anyone know if it can be removed?

For $3?? Well, it's probably not very much flameproof then, hehe.
But anyways, it's sure less flammable than hair.

More rallying, amazing!

This guy has tons of vids, but they are mostly spoilers.
I don't mind, but I'll spare who don't wanna see 'em.
If you do, go to wish you tube profile.

Have a look at this, good Nascar footage, also get tyre smoke off the fender rubbing against the tyre on Edwards car!

M3 messing around on the Top Gear track

Higher up in the rev range, which is probably where the car will be 90% of the time, that doesn't sound like a car.

Does PD have hearing problems or have they never heard a V8 before? The poor graphics on some standard cars (which should really be called 'sub-standard' cars), missing tracks from GT4 & PSP, and some of the audio I've been hearing is not a good sign. Seems rushed.

That M3 in the vid makes a noise that changes with RPMs...I'm just not sure what the noise is. It sure isn't a reciprocating engine.

I wasn't liking the copilots calls very much. I guess when it's not scripted it's harder to make them smooth and flow... I like more stuff like easy 2 right into long 3 right over crest and ford and it seemed like a lot of those turns really should have been two turns like a 2 left into long 2 left but he only called the first turn...

So if that's how he's gonna work, I think the map might be kind of necessary... although the map kind of makes the copilot unecessary :P

I am glad they did it right with stagered starts, hopefully there will be a car behind you sometimes, I like the pressure.

Also wonder how it's going to work out with tracks being random every time.... I know I like to practice my rally routes sometimes...

Please tell me there is some way to remove the track from the center of the screen during the rally racing!! Who the heck thought that was a good idea??? :ouch:

That Lamborghini video is my new favourite thing, I lov the way when he passes the cars their lights light up the interior.

It could save a bit of VRAM. Again, it depends on how it's been coded...

GT5P at 1080p is 1280x1080. This is upscaled to 1920x1080 (so you still need that mem).
@ 32bpp = 8,294,400 bytes for 1920x1080 (and 5,529,600 bytes for 1280x1080 back buffer).
2xAA is used here...

GT5P at 720p is 1280x720. This is actual.
@ 32bpp = 3,686,400 bytes (front and back buffers).
4xAA is used here...

The issue here is actually the AA technique used and that will determine how big the back buffer is. For example 720p @ 4xMSAA might warrant a back buffer 4 times the size (i.e. 15MB) and 1080p @ 2xMSAA might warrant a back buffer twice the size (i.e. 16.5MB).

The front buffer will be 1920x1080 or 1280x720 respectively. MSAA here is not the H/W routine type you find on your PC graphics card, the PS3's RSX doesn't support that.

When I read his suggestion to turn off MP3 it sounded more like a "might as well, doesn't hurt to potentially free up some memory" than a "makes things better to have mp3 turned off" sort of thing...
Assuming your MP3 is 10MB and your main RAM is 256MB - 50 or so for O/S duties (hence ~206MB) - it certainly won't hurt. The other issue is that you still have to stream that 10MB MP3 into RAM from HDD whilst also streaming textures, game data, etc from HDD.

Erm a V8 revving to 8000rpm sounds completely different to a 6000rpm 350 chev. Ever wonder why an F1 car sounds so unique? It's because they rev so high with a small displacement.

I couldn't agree more. I had the volume really low while listening to it, so I can't say for a fact that I don't like the co-pilot, but I think the map there might be really good anyways. Let's wait and see.

In course maker rally stages, the calls may be imprecise too, so the map might be the best solution.

From what I have seen the shadow flickering in GT5 is not much different to the flickering in GT5p. GT5p did not have dynamic environmental shadows, the dynamic shadows in GT5 may strain the ps3 which could enable it to have more flickering inside/outside of the car.

I do not know much about dirt 2 or Forza 3 but from I have seen is that they have weaknesses eslewhere, aggressive LOD models (and average car modeling altogether), 30fps in dirt 2, less cars on the track, very little AA or none at all (Forza has aa though), and no dynamic environmental shadows (forza 3 at least).

Both are good games but if GT5 had perfect shadows people would just jump on the baggage that could come with it (poor ingame models vs photo mode ...Forza 3). Which is worse than some flickery shadows.

If GT5 had lod to those levels, I would be upset.

GT5 is pushing the ps3 to its limits... and it has the baggage that comes with it.
