Is this satire or an actual rumor that went around?

I was hoping it was just typical sarcasm aimed at the people who are obsessed with numbers, but sadly it appears they actually thought this was the final number of cars despite there having been no new trailers or solid info since the June Playstation reveal.

The marketing push has begun!

Not really sure I'd call that a push. Just your typical "keep up engagement" type post that are rampant on social media. I mean, it's not like they're actually going to take on board any responses, the choice is probably already made, all they care about is that they get responses. All about that engagement and brand activity these days.

Late reply due to being busy, but I've answered this before dude. 1 or only a few number of player won't make use of every cars in the game, but collectively, from all GT copies sold, all of them combined will touch almost every single car in the game. Like those competitive-freak players will ignore the likes of 1886 Benz, but other kind of players like automotive enthusiasts will use that.

It’s rather selfish to tell someone “I don’t like X car, therefore it should be removed. The fans of it be damned.” Every car is someone’s favourite car, so who are you to tell them they shouldn’t be allowed to drive it?

And that's why cutting down on the car list is highly unreasonable. It is indeed, selfish, for everyone who enjoys every kind of car, from everyday cars, sports cars, supercars, race cars, rally cars, trucks, as well as the weird and wacky ones. People want lower car counts... until their favourite car doesn’t make the cut and gets dropped. Let's see what the reaction of people, including you, if your favorite car gets removed due to cutting them down.
Meh.

I'll just say that i could be fine with more car count as long as one same model doesn't have ridiculous numbers of other versions like many race cars found in the game.

That's the problem you probably don't realize.

Sheesh.

Other than licensing reasons there is no point cutting models from GTS. The cars have already been modeled now, they can't get that time back even if you or I do think they should've used that time to model something else first.

All we can hope for is going forward they start better prioritising their modelling time on the most popular cars among fans. Yes, every car has its fans but until PD are able to produce cars at an astonishing rate to be able to please everyone, they will always have to make choices, and logic dictates you try to please as many people as possible, whilst also making sure the cars work together logically, and within your planned game.

So sure, there are probably plenty of people out there that love the Honda Beat but I think it's pretty fair to say that there are far more fans who desire driving the Porsche 918, and it would fit better into the game modes, as a random example.

It's never that simple because of licensing, but I still think they could do a far better job pleasing more people with their car selection. Let's see how they do with the full GT7 list. Hopefully it's full of highly desirable cars with a good mixture of fast and slow, road and race and less boring/oddball cars that only a few will drive regularly and fit into the game modes. You do that only when you've covered all the bases.

If they prioritise the cars that people like the most, half of the car roster will be full of super an hyper cars, honestly i wish PD don't go that route and stick to their traditional way of building up the car list (and add more jdm cars and tuners like opera performance, spoon, mugen etc.)

Again, Demon Souls possible candidate for launch.

You think that Sony can release Spiderman MM, Demon Souls and GT7 at the same time ?

This moderated with a few hypercars would be pretty good.:)

It’s somewhat possible. Sony have talked at great length about the transition from current gen to next gen being very quick for them - they might compel consumers into buying the console early with a strong lineup of launch titles

I just want to put my two cents and say that as much as I hyped for GT7, being released now would most likely mean it's just a GTS with more tracks and cars plus a classic Career mode. While I'm all in for that I think there is so much room for improvement I'd rather wait a year and get a truly ultimate racing game. Things I really want to see in GT7 are:
  • Better AI and grid starts in career events
  • Better sportsmanship rating system
  • Dynamic weather/time of day on all tracks
If the game is to be released in the upcoming 6 months I'm pretty sure some of these things are not going to be there.

Obviously you shouldn't solely go by popularity, you have take into account other factors, namely as you say, limiting the number of cars of each type and how they'll be used in the game. You need to choose X amount of popular supercars, the popular muscle cars, popular city cars and so on. I'm just saying that there are a number of cars PD put in and make you wonder why.

In GT3, PD could have left out:

Mine's, TOM'S, Fiat, Gillet, Tickford, Chrysler, Daihatsu and I'll add Acura.

I don't know what the concept to GT Sport was/is. We got a barrage of cars that were out of the scope of the original(modern 2009->current) road and race cars.

Was it a "LET'S wait and see" by PD? "If players complain, we'll add some cars we were preparing for the next game.".
I just don't know.

Given that they've been working on this from the moment GTS was launched you can't say what is likely/unlikely.

See, I was going to mention that this has been in the works since well before GTS (hence GT7SP) but efforts have been appropriated after GTS. Probably not hard to have a dedicated team to provide updates and continuous car modeling, since they get more value out of modeling them for the future game.

It's my problem too for ridiculous numbers for other versions. But merely having big number of car count is different topic (it's not all about dupilcates or something). It's different to suggest removing almost entire car rosters to only "relevant" ones to only removing the other versions. Even then what they worked in PS3 onwards was Premiums and they aren't duplicates.

And no racing doesn't have only 1 liveries for each car, NASCAR isn't about all cars having exact same DuPont liveries. Super GT isn't about racing between 15 Castrol Tom's Supras.

Maybe but in terms of marketing is not the best way. Would be like Ratchet & Clank in the release window from November to May.
Because at the end of the year we have COD, Cyberpunk, AC, Fifa all of those things too

My prediction

Spiderman (November)
Demons Souls (January)
Gran Turismo 7 (March)
Ratchet & Clank (May)

Well the only thing my prediction is based on is my pessimistic approach to games' release dates. I will be happy to be wrong.

Of course they should include different liveries cars and even minor trim variations of road cars would be welcome, they just need to be more honest about it.

30 cars = misleading
3 cars with 10 liveries = accurate and clearer.

That's where the older games frustrated players. 1200 cars on paper sounds amazing, less so when you actually see the list.

Should add, PD are certainly not the only company guilty of this number padding.

That's what I suggested in the GT7 Wish List thread.

If they offer a drop down menu dedicated to trim levels then it would solve a lot of the duplicate issues. It's a separate car in game files, but it's one specific car in a car list. This would shorten the list, visually, and organize the cars a lot more cleanly.

The trim level would default to the highest spec of any vehicle, and the user would be able to choose a lower trim if they so desire (assuming it's offered).

I’m convinced we are going to have better AI in GT7 simply due to the fact that it is (judging by the ‘Gran Turismo is Back!’ comment in the reveal trailer) going to be a traditional GT game.
I think that (and am happy to be corrected) Polyphony added the cough* rubbish cough* campaign mode after seeing the numbers of units sold vs the number competing in sport mode and realised a high number of people, myself included weren’t playing Sport Mode very much so needed to add something else to keep us playing!

Actually, yes, I also want the liveries to be the color selection, but iirc, racecar sponsors want to be visible on spotlight therefore they should be displaed as the sponsor on the car's name.
Also, there's the double standard hate to GT in this department, I mean, for racing cars, from what I know, other racing games also had the different liveries made as separate cars (the official one, not the pre-deterimined fictional livery like Shift 2's color selection), like for example, Colin McRae Rally 2.0's car selection where you got 4 Focuses with different liveries treated as separate cars, but they are given free pass with it.
Just informing that GT6 without duplicates have 1064 cars. Though yeah, 1200 being less so to me was more about it containing standard cars; where they got 447 Premiums, and 152 Semi-Premiums.

The worst is that you're both right.

Which strategy Sony will opt for ? Save a few games for later or release several games to convince as many gamers as possible to come to PS5....
