The loss of detail with PSSR on was something that was immediatly visible on my first "testrun" on Tokyo:
PSSR off is the way to go again, and it basically confirmed my biased opinion against AI improved images.
In some ways it looks awesome, but when it doesnt it is a drop much larger than its quality gain.

Thanks for the detailed test. But somehow I'm missing some information.
During the whole PSSR on and off test, what was the graphic setting?
prioritize frame rate or Prioritize ray tracing / resolution?

In this case it is the best setting
prioritize frame / PSSR off?

I was hoping that the little pop-ups and texture reloaders would disappear on the pro. 🫣

with Christmas coming I really want to read something that convinces me to buy a Pro. I really thought this would be it, but clearly it isn’t. I’d certainly rather the Pro really took off and extended this gen for a few more years than all the PS6 stuff to start too soon. With covid, games still endlessly supporting last gen and the chip shortage etc it still doesn’t feel like this gen has totally taken over yet. In a way I’m glad the difference is so small because the base PS5 is still perfectly good.

But honestly some more visual features and/or a better image quality is all what we can expect. It was the same with the ps4 pro. It’s still the same generation, games won’t look substantially different on a pro console.

All of my footage and testing was done in "Prioritize Ray Tracing / Resolution" mode.

There is no "best setting", everyone will have different priorities in terms of what they want.

So... I got the Pro a few days after launch, and after spending time with various Pro-enhanced games including GT7... I might be one of the rare few that say it’s worth it despite the $700 price tag. Though it’s worth noting that I’m a huge graphics and image quality nut, so yeah, I do not represent the vast majority of people. lol

When it works properly (unlike in some recent games), PSSR can give you that native 4K-like image (sometimes even better than native 4K, as seen in FF7R) whilst retaining 60fps, something I didn’t care about until now. And having the better RT capabilities is just that extra cherry on top. For GT7 specifically, since its RT reflections were so good, I really wanted them in races rather than just the replays. So to finally have that now... yeah.

Of course, as said above, if you don’t care about any of that stuff, then yeah, stick with the base PS5. Otherwise, it’s worth the premium price, and could also help future-proof with games like GTA6.

Guess we (as in tech enthusiasts for whom GT7 is a system seller) are just too small a portion of the market for Sony to even mention the visual enhancements the pro brings to the VR table on GT7...

Otherwise it does not make sense to act as they did, and not have the pro & gt7 feature in PS5 Ppro marketing / advertisements running up to launch...
Then again, who knows what lead to GT7 being all but removed from marketing, the last months before the PS5 pro was released, and not making the release date for the Pro...
But the fact that media/fans need to report/publish what the actual enhancements are for the pro is bewildering...

Agreed, the PSSR is the red herring its magnificent when it runs old PS4 games really gets rid of jaggies (project cars was much nicer). On GT7 native 4K without PSSR looked best to my eye, its getting harder to discern the differences with latest upgrades. For me these upgrades are welcome as it pushes towards making the photo modes truly legitimate, not sure its good value for money mind. The digital foundry review mentioned the VR improvement was significant removing frame replication so that moving your head around had less latency.

I think for now the Base PS5 doing a Very Good Job!!
OK there is a Difference between Base/Pro BUT it is NOT that much difference to replace the Base PS5 ...Yet!

A question for the Pro owners here.
Since I've had the Pro, I've noticed that I keep getting stuck in the Paystation menu.
e.g. when I want to start a game (but only sometimes)

All of my footage and testing was done in "Prioritize Ray Tracing / Resolution" mode.

hmmm, When I set the value to "Prioritize Ray Tracing / Resolution" I often had the feeling that there were massive frame drops. That's why I switched back. Have you never had that?

I'm getting the feeling that my Pro is a bit buggy with the problems in the menu.

What is the difference ?
