Praying we get a bunch of new events when sophy is released on GT7.

They can call the patch GT7 2.0 a bit like what happened with GT5.

Fingers crossed 🤞

I was thinking they will probably have a 2.0 update and that's why there is the "coming soon" place holder tile in music rally. For more things to do while the game installs. Just a thought though.

Personally I'm pretty sick of reading about Sophy. They should shut up about it until there's a solid date for when it will be implemented and how it will be implemented.

Currently it serves as another example of the enormous chasm between what PD markets and what PD delivers.

I’m almost positive PD had said you’d be able to upload gps route recordings in GT6. Did they ever implement that? I quit playing it before that was a thing so I have no idea if they kept their word.

PD didnt market any sort of AI.

Sophy is Sony AI.

What happened is that players got really excited and made this connection on their own in the hopes to get it.
Not entirely, no. From one of the GTP articles on the subject:

Although Sophy has been in developed over the past few years using Gran Turismo Sport, the technology will actually make its debut in Gran Turismo 7 in a future update to the game. Kazunori Yamauchi’s announcement was light on details, so it was something we were eager to ask him about.

“Sophy will probably appear in front of the player in three forms,” Yamauchi-san explained. “As a teacher that will teach driving to players, a student that will learn sportsmanship from players, and as a friend to race with. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a B-Spec mode, where the player is the race director and Sophy is the driver.”

Sophy could also be used as a tool by the game itself. “By principle it is possible to use Sophy for the BOP settings,” Yamauchi added. “If it’s just to align the lap times of different cars, it’s already possible to do that now. But because the BoP settings aren’t just about lap times, we wouldn’t just leave it all to Sophy, but certainly she will be a help in the creation of BoPs.”

Polyphony and Kaz have certainly played their part in marketing Sophy and making sure that it's associated with GT7 as well as GT Sport. People that are expecting a full fledged Sophy AI to race against in GT7 are being overly optimistic, but they're not building off nothing at all.

Long footage of the humans against Sophy, from the last Showdown.

I personally find these races very entertaining, and it is super impressive what they managed to do with a deep learning approach.

Sony AI already got their publication in Nature, so there's nothing more to do on the R&D side really.
Since they ported it to GT7 and bother doing more of these confrontations, it must mean there's more to come from the entertainment angle.
Even if Sophy doesn't come to GT soon, or doesn't come to GT7 at all, it seems bound to lead the way to top quality AI at some point.

Err, no. A huge amount still needs to be done on the R&D side, the D bit is for development and as AI a lot still needs to be done on the intelligence side of things for racing alongside people.

Yes indeed. That could probably be inferred by the context, but really meant "research" there, thanks for pointing out.
My point is, as a prestige AI project, they went as far as they can possibly go. Next question is what's next and do they bother to apply it to real world, i.e. the game.

About racing alongside people - from the video, it does really well at that.
Better than most people did on Daily race A when it was the rally track, that's for sure.
How easy / feasible it is to productize it is obviously another question, but Sophy is able to mix with human drivers (well, at least the top of the top ones).

I disagree strongly, Sophy isn't even close in terms of racecraft to the better AI in other titles (RaceRoom, ACC, and AMS2 are significantly ahead in this regard), let alone what would be acceptable in real racing.

That's not really a great benchmark, is it?

Hence the need for more R&D

Beating them isn't racecraft, and Sophy lacks racecraft (in a major way).

Racecraft was terrible at last year showing, that I agree. Really too aggressive and "messy".

But this time? It is not that obvious to me.
There are a few weird lines or move here and there sure, but it looked absolutely ball park to me, including the couple of spin out which looked... almost human like

Which part did you think were that bad racecraft wise?

Oh come on, Sophy repeatedly uses cars in front to lean on and pass them, basically using an exploit of the GT physics engine to get past, and it's certainly not Racecarft that would be acceptable in the real world. Is it as bad as past itterations? No. Is it now good racecraft? Also no.

It's arguably a bigger issue than with GT's current AI. That does the same or tries to PIT you because it just wants to get back on the racing line, Sophy does it because it's learned that it's an effective way to pass the car in front.

In all fairness to GT's current AI; it does what it does because it is on rails and doesn't even recognize you exist.

They did not.
“This feature, available at a later stage through an update, will allow you to create your own custom tracks that can be driven in the game. Additionally, in another update we will add the possibility to generate a track by capturing the GPS coordinate data of a mobile app while you are driving that course. This GPS-generated tracks will be available in the game as playable content.”

That’s what I remember reading and thinking wow that’s so cool, I have GT5 but I’m buying the game strictly for that feature!

I watched the video where they are racing Sophy. I'll be honest, it lacks racecraft (not that much though), but it would be so much more fun to race against those AI then what we have right now. They were glued to the back of the racers at times, smelling some, then they pull out a nice inside maneuver aggressive as sh

So basically the average higher split online driver.Fast and agressive with dubious racecraft?

Don't forget talking smack about you on their stream because they're on the softer compound and think you're braking early. Yes, it happened to me a few weeks back.

Fraga said something interesting about human vs ai imputs, even if we think about pressing 50% of the brake we might end up pressing 55% or 47% the intent VS execution is something AI don't have to deal with so they are instantly at an advantage.

If Sophy ever starts smack talking players it's officially robot apocalypse time.

I wonder what its vtuber avatar would look like.

To your first point, I wonder if reducing reaction time is an easy way to scale the AI back. Of course it would be more complicated than that but it's just a thought.

Emily Jones said they already scaled it back for the recent event. But they are trying to push these as far as they can to see how it behaves.
