BeamNG doesn't have licenced cars. They'd never be allowed to do this with real cars.
I said this a few months ago. I was flamed a lot for saying manufacturers don't want their cars destroyed like in BeamNG. haha

Damage is really important, that livestream looked ridiculous because the players were bumping each other, going into walls and other ridiculous things. That diminishes both the excitement for the player and the viewer because the mistakes don't matter at all. In RL motorsport is exciting because the driver has to be careful in his driving, passing, strategy, etc. That's what makes it interesting, not just fast cars going in circles. One mistake could cost you the entire race even if you've been leading for the last few hours. Take that away and racing becomes very boring.

Actually, that now raises a question for me. Why didn't Polyphony work on visual damage when creating these new "super premium" cars? It makes no sense to work on brand new models and not consider visual damage.

I absolutely agree that's why forza outclasses every sim its not even close.

This, especially with the focus on eSports. Without damage, there's not nearly as much risk involved.

Also, from a visual perspective, it's helpful to see damage to be able to assess other cars on the track easier. Coming up on a chicane, and see a car just off-track? You'll be able to better estimate what it's going to do, be it re-join or limp around, based on what condition it appears in.

Crash and it's over happens in a lot of other games, the GRID games for example.

Correct. I posted in another thread but when it comes to most manufactures they have two basic requirements/restrictions. The passenger cell must not be deformed in any way and no major fires covering the whole car or again, the passenger area.

So no, whilst this is possible in real life crashes:

And fires like this (Image ok to post, nobody injured)

Manufactures don't want to see that in games. At least two developers have corroborated this, Kunos and SMS. I think Codemasters have said similar. Everything else is generally fair game.

I always thought Forza has a good balance of cosmetic and mechanical damage. OK the cars are a little more robust than is realistic but if they were like those of Beam NG I think it would take out some of the enjoyment. It is after all a game, and we are not professional racing drivers. Beam NG's gimmick is the damage, giving a new slant on hooning it around (not a good deal else to it at the moment though). One would think manufacturers would agree on a damage model if it was effectively the same for all cars, eg. a Volvo would have the same structural rigidity as a Citroen.

From how he said it it's probably just mechanical. Otherwise he would said "cosmetic and mechanical".

Probably something underwhelming anyway - think similar progress like with sound and AI.

High level mechanical damage with some cosmetic would be more than enough to make racers more careful me thinks...
