Going by GT5 sales which we have actual figures for, that would be giving up $250,000,000 in sales in the first month in the hopes that by being cheap with DLC in the future you can convince 5-10 million people to buy $25-50 worth of DLC in the future, just to break even. Doesn't make much sense from a business standpoint to me. More likely that they base game would be full price to get that huge initial push and then DLC priced according to current industry standards of about $1/car with a freebie thrown in here and there to keep the base happy.

Yeah all fair, but good economic ideas aren't always based entirely on things that worked well in the past.

But you definitely underestimate the importance of offline career and experience, and to that extent having a huge amount of content to keep busy with. It's critical to the multi-million copy sales that GT has been accustomed to. This seems to be the biggest argument on these forums around the concept of the next GT, I would guess the same arguments are causing some turmoil within PD right now because it's a hard set of decisions. I would like to think that the delay is a result of a shift toward a more conventional GT. Never get up hopes with GT.

I think that the only real majority of people who have issue with not having the traditional grinding (career) are those that frequent the forums.
And as much as we don;t like to admit it, we ARE a minority as far as Retail sales go. A noisy minority, yes.

Average Joe just wants to fire it up, grab a car and get into a race.
I know that's all I have time for these days, half an hour or an hour a couple of times a week.
And why I persist with the quick-matches and seasonal events. Especially ones using courtesy cars.
QM's have their downsides (Suspension tuning, and a few idiots), but that style of event IS what average Joe wants.
And some form of Shuffle Racing, that everyone around here loves.

I used to be able to spend an entire weekend glued to GT4 or F1 games, get up only for food and sleep,
but life gets in the way these days.

The fact that GT Sport relies so heavily on online playability is a scary prospect when you realise that if the online services are rubbish, the whole game would fail. You'd hope Kaz is aware of this prospect, and will do whatever is necessary to ensure that the online services ACTUALLY WORK under pressure. Resting on this is a risky strategy for a game which needs to breathe new life into the franchise... Some are eager to play a GT game on PS4.

Statistics say otherwise. During a period when you were often lucky to see 300 lobbies on the busiest of weekends and routinely around 100 on weeknights, a healthy percentage of over half a million surveyed were going deep into the online portion of the game. The figures for GT6 are even higher.

Out of curiosity, does anyone think the rather poor launches of Assetto Corsa and Project CARS could negatively effect GT SPORT sales? I remember reading a study that about 70%(?) of buyers are "casual", as in the go in the store, think it looks good and buys it.

Considering that those who bought PCARS when it came out got a unstable mess that was for most people unplayable without and racing wheel and how Assetto Corsa rather meh'ed...

Will those people be hesitant to jump into another racing game?

I think the fact that Gran Turismo is an established brand will help launch sales, I can see it maybe being a little lower than expected but then again, it's the debut of GT on PS4, so maybe that will give PS4 owners an incentive to get it. I suppose we'll just have to see how it plays out. Here's hoping it's good. 👍

I bought pCars on PC to a friend of mine because he said it looked good and he wanted to try it. He was a BIG GT gamer back in the GT1-2 days but then he lost interest to all cars in general. He even sold his first car as "buy wheels get free car". That's how little he cared. Then he slowly gained interest for racing games again but he's as casual as it gets, sincehe really doesn't care. He wants quick fun and that's that. So around a year after I bought him the game, I checked on his Steam acc - he barely logged 5h in the game. He doesn't own a wheel, so I guess he must've "failed" with a controller and then gave up. Everytime I ask him "hey let's hang and play GT some day" he doesn't respond(been like this since GT4, lol). But I guess if he gave it a try he'd remember why he loved GT1-2, because in the end GT is fun no matter how lacking it might be. I can't wait for GTS. I'm literally restless as hell because I can't wait. And I want to make liveries! If I had the money I'd buy an XBone and FM6 just to make liveries. Just like I did with 360 and FM4. (Now I don't have anything else than FH2 and my girlfriends 360. It's not the same.)

Edit/update: just grabbed FM2 second hand just to play around with making liveries. :D

I think the poor launches of GT5 and 6 would be a bigger effect than AC and pCARS.

I agree with GT6 not having a typical PDI launch, but GT5? Not really. I can remember GT5 selling millions on launch week and if memory serves me correctly, it's one of the franchises best sellers.

He meant the launch quality of the game, not how well it sold at launch. GT5 had a terrible launch, missing a whole host of things and numerous things needed fixing. v1.00 was a joke. Millions bought it, but a large chunk of those could've conceivably been put off for GT6 and beyond.

Samus is correct. You were referring to pCARS being a hot mess of a game on release. GT5 wasn't quite as bad, but 1.01 was a pretty hot mess. It was barely even comparable to what the game ended up being after Spec 2.

While a lot of people bought it purely on the fact that it was Gran Turismo and they'd been waiting for ages (and GT5P was pretty awesome), I think the quality of GT5 at release probably dampened the spirits of many.

And the release of GT6 didn't exactly do much to counter that. It wasn't broken, but there wasn't much there to break either. It took a long time before the game was fully featured with all it claimed to contain, and I think that probably disappointed people too.

I wouldn't blame people at all for being incredibly wary of a day 1 release by Polyphony, purely based on their last two games.

Looks like we might see some new content tomorrow at PSX. From the PS Experience iPhone app on the GT Sport exhibitors page:

"Choose from a new line-up of cars and tracks available for the first time at Playstation Experience, including Vision GT vehicles."
Interesting! Can't wait to see what's in stock. PSX as a whole should be good fun to watch.

I'll guess S-FR, MX-5 ND or Mustang Gr.B, Hyundai VGT.

and I'm more hyped than before.

Darn it, I'm hyped for the FH3 blizzard expansion, I'm hyped for the 1st Porsche Pack in Assetto Corsa reaching consoles, I'm hyped for the next FH3 dlc pack, and now this!

Hopefully all the remaining tracks are real tracks. No ones cares about these modern Polyphony-made tracks. Tokyo Expressway, Northern Isle Speedway and Fisherman's Ranch look as exciting as Cape Ring.

Some layout of Cape Ring weren't that bad. But yep, bring back the classic GT tracks please! I prefer Grand Valley to any Tilkedrome.

Indeed, Cape Ring Inside(I believe?) with 550pp shuffle racing in GT5 was fun. But yeah I miss some classic action, COMPLEX STRING, SSR11, El Capitan.. some of the tracks I want back.
