If the beta will have no outcome for the game, then what is its purpose?
Here's a good definition of the beta phase of software development:

The beta phase begins when a product propels from “functional but hideous” to “polished and ready to go.” Bugs are hunted down and fixed, features are improved or revamped for maximum usability, the interface and graphics receive an overhaul, and performance issues are optimized. Even though beta testing occurs as the third step in development, it can often be the longest phase because there are so many aspects to test.

The beta phase is typically initiated when a developer opens up a product to those who haven’t been involved in development. A closed beta is a limited release where only those who have been given access can test the software while an open beta or public beta is a free (as in liberty) release that allows anyone to download and try it out.

What to expect from beta software: You should expect a beta product to be “feature complete,” meaning that everything that’s intended to be in the final product has been implemented. You may experience major and minor bugs that break certain portions of the product, but rarely will you find critical bugs that require immediate attention. Beta software can go through a lot of changes, so expect frequent patches and updates.
You forgot to mention that, while betas are typically feature-complete, closed ones (at least from my experience) have most of their content walled off so the dev team can focus on one or a few areas of particular concern.

Then, fast forward 12 months, and PD announce the beta is coming after all, and people are now suddenly annoyed and complain about said beta

Only if they don't get into it, if they do get in all of a sudden it is the greatest idea ever

On a more serious note, I think the people complaining now are different than those who said it was a good idea in 2016. Others are just tired of waiting.

Or PD is simply buying some time cos the game targets end of 2017. 💡

I mean..the trailer showed nothing new. In fact - it's not even a different trailer showing the old stuff. It's the exact same trailer.

Only in the case of marketing betas (which are basically demos by any other name).

True beta tests can be fully featured or narrow in focus, it depends totally on what the product is and which area needs the most testing.

Wait, so the TrackMania Turbo closed beta was a marketing one? I genuinely did not know that. And here I was, feeling lucky that I got selected for a closed beta!

Now, though, I'd like to slightly change the direction of the conversation: how long do you think the gap between the end of the beta and GT:S' release do you think it'll be?

People were excited about a public beta.
It got canned.

PD revise the situation, due to who knows what circumstances, and revive the beta.
People complain.

Go figure.
Because it's a year later and shouldn't be in beta phase anymore?
And you left the word "public" out in the second sentence why?

Maybe the "people's" reactions are different because it actually IS different.

I would guess 7 months is the plan.. 8 because of last min refinement.

Have had a feeling for awhile that it will be a 2018 release.. the info in the beta will determine if I still believe that is true.

PD must be done with testing and go GOLD just after E3 2017 finishes. It wouldn't be smart move to launch in the same time window other AAA games and racers will. The Sim Racing genre has never been so alive and expansive and reaching into the mainstream. Always been a GT fan, but there's real competition out there.
Gran Turismo has an almost 20-years-old established fan base, I'll always buy my GT games, but others won't.

That depedns entirely on how closed the closed beta is. I've known them to accept almost everyone who applies for it, not what I would call a closed beta at all.

However what the hell would I know about beta testing for Sony? I've only been a Sony beta tester for a decade.

Mmm, I was going to say closer to 2 months. But you're right, this is PD we're talking about, so it could be longer. In that case... 4 months? 5? Who knows, really.

I'm thinking May/June. And that's not optimism, it's "let's get real here." This game should have come out 8 months ago, 8 more from here would be absurd.

So that would be 3-4 months from now.

I think that car is Renault Megane R.S.

The front from the car looks totaly different so i think it's not the Megane R.S.
Or do they have different versions of the Megane?

Nope.
If the game arrives so early as June I might actually soil myself.

Very interesting.

Cool - I keep hoping for a dash cam view each time I see a video and they cycle through the camera views.. but I never do. Hopefully someone will show the FOV settings of the cockpit view.. maybe they will have options to remove the wheel.

Nice to see a better driver too.

Hello everyone,

I have not intervened in the GTPlanet forum for some time, I hope that some of you remember me here and know that I greet you warmly. :)

I am the leader of the TSRacing e-Sport and i'm the originator of the video that the member AKps3 generously shared with you. In passing, it would have been nice to quote the source of the video but I do not blame you of course. 👍

I hope you find this video interesting, I searched every corner of the demo but most of the options were unavailable.
As I said in the video information, the build worked with the standard PS4 and was very beautiful with incredible lighting effects.

Nevertheless, I found that some textures lacked relief with the mild presence of aliasing. When I drove with a cloudy weather without light effects, the game suddenly appeared less impressive graphically, a bit like Project CARS for example.

I reassure you, the overall set is very good and certainly all the more on a PS4 Pro.

On the driving side, I took a lot of fun, I appreciated the feeling of mass transfers, the work of shock absorbers and tires.

One thing reassured me about driving physics, when you completely remove driving aids, with some cars, the game can be very sharp and particularly difficult, certainly not within the reach of everyone.

The rally mode left me an identical impression, I expected something very arcade but this is absolutely not the case, you have to be patient and calm with the pedals, it was very interesting!

Unfortunately I can not tell you about the audio part because the TV had a problem.

The new HUB, as you can see in the video, is very interesting and effective, it is a good point even if it is not yet perfect in the placement of some information.

I come out of this test with beaucoip of hope for the sequel and look forward to receiving the beta test in order to deepen all these impressions at my home.

Sincerely,
Anthony.

Yeah, my expectations for FOV settings (beyond normal, narrow, and narrower), dash cam (interior without wheel and hands), and seat adjustment are not existent.
Once you have that and can set it just right for every car, it's a letdown not to have it. But hopefully the closest interior view will be nicely configured seeing most people race on a single screen. From the console version of AC that was also missing which is a shame really.

Great video @Yinato

Positive impressions...

Love that cockpit lighting towards the end of the video, kind of incredible... 👍
Do you think they implemented global illumination? Light is bouncing around the cockpit from an indirect source.

People complain.

Go figure.

It's a fair point.

On the other hand, Polyphony should expect to get some complaints pretty much every time they open their mouth. They're so reclusive that people disappointed at the shenanigans to date haven't really had a chance to vent, and so will take any chance they can get.

Me, I think the beta is a step in the right direction, not necessarily for Polyphony but at least for GTS being released. And we finally get a relatively unrestricted view of the game. I expect we'll have lots of good footage and sounds, and probably some enthusiastic people going through the code to see what they can learn. I'm keen to see what GTS is like when it's not demo code that people only have five minutes with.

If it wasn't close to completion, they wouldn't have (re)announced the beta; if I had to take a guess, I would say they are going to use it to test the online playability/stability and thus iron out any issues that come up. It also begs the question of why people are so desperate to try this that they're making new PSN accounts to get in the US test when it's been confirmed there's going to be separate beta's for other regions...

Anyway, minus a few additional tweaks they wouldn't put out a beta only to add goodness knows what on top of it... not if GTS is going to be released this year.

I'd be careful with those assumptions. The beta could turn out to be a disaster because their netcode is shonky and they have to go back to the drawing board for a year to rework it. There's any number of things, both related to the beta and not, that could cause the release date to be pushed beyond this year.

If there's a beta now they're probably not planning on releasing any earlier than July/August. October/November is probably more realistic, considering the original release date. It doesn't take much to push that into next year. We all still remember GT5.

I'm thinking May/June. And that's not optimism, it's "let's get real here." This game should have come out 8 months ago, 8 more from here would be absurd.

And yet it's Polyphony, so not really out of the question.

I think one of the reasons people have a right to complain about the beta is they were told (was it a year ago?) the beta was cancelled so they could get the game sooner. They were told if a beta was released it will delay the game. Now all this time later they are saying they will release a beta which they told us will delay the release. I don't know how else to view this news other than with the view PD lied.
