GT Academy July 2013!!

Disappointed I didn't get close to my theoretical best of 2:16.2 but anyway, I finished 9th worldwide and qualified for the nationals so I guess I should be happy! :)

Congrats to all who have qualified! 👍

hello bandit, did you go to uk finals last year? if not, why?

So far gtacademy just wants to reserve the right to not include current finalists in the future, given that it says "may not be eligible" its just them covering themselves incase they decide on not including some folks, contracts do that so they aren't sued or something. I doubt whether they will deny people in the future.

On another note they may want fresh faces at the finals every year, possibly because they might want to extend the TV program to the finals, who knows, and if they do do that then in TV seeing the same faces every year wouldn't make a good program, would it?

Pretty much this.

Lol.. its a game top 50 people wouldn't drive a race car like that. Heck you can have someone in the 19s kick a guys ass whose running in the 16s in a real car at a real race track. Plus there wouldn't be abs like 90% of the gamers are using.

That's true given most winners weren't even the fastest in the qualifiers so speed in gt5/6 doesn't always translate to the track, both titech and Dan holland were beaten and they are pretty quick in the game

Understatement of the century right there

good job, I have seen many members GTP recognized in by the lists and I'm glad, now I am also qualified and have to go to the national finals, good luck to all

now i have to test mi first WRS :) haha

Can't see them elimating all finalists for next year, just wouldn't be competitive enough, they haven't done it in 5 years so can't see a drastic change like that happening,
Anyway for this year we should be consecrating on!

I don't see what experience national finalists have gained anyway they played a game in an acrade. They let some one race an arp formula 3 car for 2 seasons but not play a game in silverstone ?

Maybe 2/3 shots and your out so you don't get mega experienced gt5 veterans winning every year.
Every year you play gt5 your gonna get faster just like any other championship

I don't think they should allow race camp finalists back could take years for a new talent to win. Its like gp2 you get your chance if you don't win your done.

Last week there was a young guy with out a driving licence saying he should be allowed to race camp etc he'd have no chance to beat a guy with track exprience so if its your first track experience at race camp i can see why it stings

I think it would be madness to allow only one shot at the national finals and I don’t think they will. In a few short years you would be down to some fairly average gamers and it would introduce a completely false and anti-competitive dynamic to the whole process. While I agree that there's always a chance some of the slower gamers might be quicker in a real car (initially at least), it seems some people are losing sight of the original vision of the competition which is to take the best GT players and see if they can translate their skills into the real world. It’s not to start out with some slightly above average GT players who might already have a bit of real world ability and hand out motorsport careers like Willy Wonka's golden tickets. It’s the link with taking the best GT players that makes the whole thing work as a brand. If the competition is taken away from the GT side of things by effectively punishing success and rewarding failure, I would see that as the beginning of the end for the GT Academy concept.

The national finals are always intensely competitive and even if you’re right on top of your game you still need an element of good fortune to make it through. This was certainly true in my case and having been both unsuccessful and successful at this stage, I know that the difference between the two outcomes can be a twitch of the foot or 1/1000th of a second. Race camp is a different kettle of fish and the outcome relies much less on good fortune when you have a week to prove yourself. With the experience gained during that week, it’s easy to understand why this has been restricted to one attempt. It’s pretty obvious by now that the process works as it is and that there’s an untapped, easily accessible pool of more talent out there than Nissan have race cars.

Oh and big congratulations to all who qualified this year.

It'll be my first time driving a car on a track if I get through, gonna be a steep learning curve but I'm hoping I can adapt, the first time I ever drove a kart in the wet, I won the race so I'm hoping that stands me in good stead 👍

You should at least do a track day with manual no ABS and TC car on both street tire and semi slick, preferably with decent HP, both wet + dry and RWD :)

jann did win and he'd never been to a track so must be possible

I think driving a real car even on the road can only be a positive

plus its what the competition is all about bedroom to race track etc

I don't have enough money to spend on a track day, so I'll just have to trust my talent 👍

And that's what Nissan is counting on when they find the next GT Academy Champion! Makes for a much better story to when they go to Le Mans, etc and do well. 👍

Haha, just saying its easy for someone to win even though they weren't fast in the game, just have to be good on track. A lot of things come in play when your in track that can matter nerves is the biggest one.

Anyway, that clause is just standard legal stuff I don't thing they will not include people who have qualified but haven't made it to Silverstone.

Cool with another young driver, personally I'm 19 and never been on a racetrack before or driven a fast car (well, my 1972 Volvo has 120 hp but I wouldn't call that fast), I have just driven gocarts with friends (hire for 10 mins) so I hope I have a talent too when racing around a real track with a sports car! :)

I've been to bedford autodrome, its pretty awesome, met some GTAcademy coaches there as well, so that was pretty sweet, driving on track wasn't that difficult so I guess gt5 isn't that bad in training. The price was pretty sweet too and it would have been cheaper if I had my own car. But haven't you done Karting before Bandit?

Yeah, I've done karting but it's nothing like driving a full car around a track, much more power and different pedals, different driving position, etc...

It will help, if you've driven a car even on the road, particularly a manual then you'll already be ahead of the curve, my biggest flaw was downshifting, when I drive a manual on the road I usually block downshift so I was struggling a bit with that but you get the hang of it. Given that guys who go to silverstone will be pushing quite harder then I was, the downshifting will get a lot of people I think

Yeah, I drive on the road but it's a very low power front wheel drive car, so it's hard to practice heel and toe in it  I do go round corners quite fast though, if I don't brake as much I'm saving fuel right? 💡

You don't need heel and toe so I wouldn't bother practising it :)

I cant really find a balance between track and virtual. Do corners around 100mph in my car yet hit the virtual track and cant get same pace on silverstone. Annoys me a bit, even f1 drivers uses sims to practise.
