Speed limits on a race track. Idiots. 👎

Rendered completely unnecessary by this "some spectator areas prohibited (most likely the same as above" :dunce:

My faith in Governing bodies is not being firmed up by this level of incompetence.

So you rather have laps that are 3 seconds faster insted of a safe race? They drove about 220 km/h on the Flugplatz, you won't notice much difference while watching

It's not only about the spectators safety. Jann could easily been hurt during this accident. There were enough crashes at Flugplatz where the drivers had a lot of luck not getting hurt badly

Both lifted before the Flugplatz and the cars didn't get any slower since 2012..sadly an accident like this had to be expected at some point...
This. Just this.

Anyone who has the guts to say this was a "freak" accident will get absolutely none of my attention; a "freak" accident is one that comes with no warning, not one that we've been on the very edge of for at least 4 years, let alone the drama in Slovakia back in 2011. It was going to happen at some point here, and it did. At least it happened before the cars spiraled out of control completely.

The speed limit isn't as good as capping the power a lot further in my opinion, but hey ho, it's something.

Learn to read my post. The second statement renders the first one utterly pointless.
But we'd still have cars going off at fairly scary, unabated speeds. Just because Jann walked away doesn't mean all drivers are invincible from such hits.
Now that that's temporarily solved...any GT news of late?
By big British GT write-up is due this evening.

Not sure if this was put up here, kinda old but...refreshing (in a throwing up sort of way). DELTAWING GT CAR?! :scared:

Glad they've taken action swiftly, not sure I agree with the measures taken, but they ticked all the boxes they needed to to be seen to be taking action.

Maybe the aero rules could be changed? Currently, most underbodies of the cars (including GTR's) are flat and closed, so the air has no way to go. After the similar LeMans crashes, the cars have now chassis which allow the air to "escape" from underneath the car. Maybe something like this could be a solution together with a power cap.

@catamount39 saw this concept a few weeks ago. Sounds interesting but I don't think it could compete with other GT cars

Not if they reduced the power enough. These rulings are stupid. Each one is rendered unnecessary by the preceding ruling.

Those rulings are nessessary to make sure all the races will take place and that it won't happen again in the short term. In the longterm, there are other actions requiered like higher fences and car restrictions. But you can't change the restricitions for one track where cars from all over the world compete following rules that apply on all other tracks in the world.

You have to remember the immense pressure they've been put under from fans, teams, drivers, the media etc, to come up with a sensible middle-ground solution to the issues that have caused the recent events to unfold as they have done. They haven't been laid-back, but they haven't overreacted either - it just sensibly tackles the key main issues that have arisen.

Considering the time frame they've had to come up with something that pleases both parties, I think some applause for the DMSB is due.

Admittedly, the speed limit is something I don't quite like, but there's been a lot of high speed traffic avoidance and near misses on the Döttinger recently, so it may actually prove effective.

I'd imagine it will throw out a few questions for teams regarding set-up. At the top end the power's all getting used to overcome drag, with less power I wonder if they will go to a lower down force setting to compensate... perhaps slowing them to 200km/h as well is to compensate for this.

I have mixed feelings on the 200 kph limit but it's a lot better than permanent yellow flag sections where no passing is allowed.

With the 200/250 km/h zones while accerlerating way before the "dangerous" zones, there will be no hard breaking short before the start of those restricted areas. That is very important!

IMSA would have just told the drivers "if you kill somebody or yourself you will get a drive-thru penalty" so at least they are doing something.
They'd also give the drive-through to the wrong car.

What happens when they all check up before the speed limit zones? The cars all don't have the same braking performance.

How the hell will it be policed? Are we going to have to put radar guns up or speed cameras? How many people will get races ruined by a speeding penalty and what will the infraction be if that were to be the case?

– Speed limits are enforced by GPS with heavy fines in place for infringements. Once cars have passed the speed limit zone, acceleration will be allowed again.
