GT Sport Le Mans - the best realistion of a sim track ever?

One thing that makes it hard for me to truly appreciate GT Sport graphics is my recent venture into the world of Assetto Corsa. The latter puts graphical detail into asphalt and kerbs textures to an extent where the track surfaces in GT Sport look dull in comparison. No doubt that GT Sport has more photo realism going for it when looking at the environments overall, but the surface textures in GT Sport are off-putting after having experienced the immersion of Assetto Corsa in cockpit view.

I just checked some footage and I wasn't too impressed. There was a stark lack of shadows, sparse foliage, the buildings looked like CAD models, and the texture of the tarmac looked like it was made of large pebbles. Something about the onboard camera also made the kerbs look flat.

Buildings in AC can look a bit flat but at least they are rather consistent. In GT Sport the trackside textures around Le Mans vary from great to horrible. However, please try AC first hand before judging the graphical aspects you talk about.

Yet to see any horrible trackside textures. I own AC and PC2 and neither are even remotely close to GTS in their implementation of Le Mans. I have been there so many times in real life the GTS version is the closest ever by a wide margin.

I've gone through several different footage reels and AC has the look of a PC port where graphic fidelity has been diminished from the PC version across the board.

Gran Turismo is a console specific title and PD does a great job of focusing their attention to detail where it's needed for the driving experience. So yeah, I'm sure if you parked in front of a building you'll find a polygon count saving aberation that nobody cares about. All console specific developers are great at playing triage with the system's resources using smoke and mirrors to make an impact where it counts. It's the nature of console gaming development.

I still plan on picking up all of the racing games when they go on sale so I really have no concern one way or the other as I'm going to be playing all of them anyways.

For me, PD did a great job with this track, there are people complaining, but we have to remember the optimization that had to be made for the game to consistently run on a normal PS4, this is to pay attention to some details and leave aside several others, but surely they would be able to deliver something much more beautiful if they had more powerful hardware to run the game.

Check some of the buildings on the right just after the first Mulsanne chicane. One building in particular is entirely washed out, but not something you'll notice when looking ahead under normal circumstances.

At Mulsanne Corner you'll find some highly detailed building textures, but suddenly there's a low resolution metallic-looking shed on the left when coming out of the corner.

Not building textures per se, but the grass textures on the left spectator banking between the Indianapolis and Arnage corners is entirely stripped for detail.

I wasn't specifically comparing Le Mans between different games or implying that it doesn't look realistic in GT Sport. I'm only saying that Le Mans in GT Sport doesn't blow me away graphically, and that AC has become my benchmark for textures in areas that matter to me when immersing myself in the driving (asphalt, kerbs and car interiors).

AC dosen't have Le Mans. I agree about the PC2 version looking worse than GT Sport.

I've gone through several different footage reels and AC has the look of a PC port where graphic fidelity has been diminished from the PC version across the board.

So have I and footage doesn't compare to how it looks on my TV coming straight from the PS4.

Gran Turismo is a console specific title and PD does a great job of focusing their attention to detail where it's needed for the driving experience.

I assume you mean graphically? I'm not disagreeing. AC only captures the immersive elements better for me.

They definitely did an admirable job with Le Mans compared with Monza, where you can see trees popping in on the first straight. (at least on the standard PS4)

My favorite track in this game so far. But here is a minor problem when using slow cars while using Automatic Transmission. When the slow car reaches it's max speed on the long straight, I get the repeated exhaust sounds over and over again. In real life, the max speed of the car will continue to run smoothly and not keep repeating the engine sound over and over again. Is there a way to fix that?

It would be quite embarrassing if PD didn't replicate Le Mans correctly... This replication definitely sets the bar for other racing games and future GT Sport tracks.

Yeah, this seals it as best track in n the game and best looking track done by PDI.

I would suggest doing a Gr. 2 race and watch the replay. These cars make such a howl as they pass by the camera angle below. Make sure the volume is turned up.

You are hitting the rev limiter. You need to adjust the gearing for a higher nominal top speed.

Although I disagree that its the best-modeled track ( Bathurst is by a large margin) it has the best lighting/ shadow quality.

Mulsanne straight again resurfaced after 2012? It shouldn't be completely smooth. Overall track surroundings looks great, surface though too smooth.

Didn't do those on purpose. The PS4 Share record DVR glitches/skips after a certain time for some reason. Hope the PS5 has better built-in recording software. I use the files straight from the ps4 without any post-editing.
Oh that’s weird, hopefully a future system software update can fix it, having to wait for a future PS5 is probably going to be quite a loooooong wait...

It’s very nice but a bit too smooth. I remember driving the front engine Nissan lmp1 in GT6 and the Mulsane straight was very bumpy, probably due to GT6’s lack of FFB damping.

Yeah, it just looks unreal. PD's best looking track by far.

Thanks for sharing, I was so cheering for you on lap 5... and, lap 3 was beautiful.
Very nice "racing", it would be so nice if everyone would ease up into braking zones when following, with no chance to pass, the way you do... to ensure carnage is avoided.
Nice video, nice race, excellent driving.

You would not believe how much I practice this very thing. I have gotten quite good at following someone very close into braking zones without ever touching them. It's an accomplishment I'm quite proud of but it took alot of practice to read the car in font of you that closely.

I agree, in Monza, i lose my immersion with every lap because of this.

Adjust only the last gear and crank it to the highest number?

If you just adjust last gear then there may be quite a step up from the previous gear. Easiest, for me, was to use the get option to set the top desired speed and it adjusts all the ratios to get there smoothly. Say 240 mph in this case.

On a separate note they have the surface really smooth for bike racing - particularly Bugatti circuit but there is also a 24 hour bike race too that uses the full track.

I am inclinded to agree with the OP. Doing the 1 hour Le Mans endurance in the XJR-9 was one of my best races in GT Sport so far. Mainly I think due to the quality of the track replication.

What the heck happened?
I could swear I watched a 10 lap race video... guy finished 3rd... but now I find no link in this thread.
I've gone crazy.

Either way, @Rinsky, yes, it's an art... that requires patience.

It is insanely gorgeous. The only thing it is missing is full night time mode!

I think what PD has been doing is absolutely amazing. They are basically re-doing all these tracks to the level they always dreamed of. Lidar scanning everything and capturing insane amounts of texture detail. I would imagine they have built these tracks to a level that are way beyond the capabilities of the current PS4 hardware.

Definitely looking forward to seeing what they can do in the future.

Ha, absolutely not. The surface isn't even realistic, it is good as far as console standards. IRacing and Assetto Corsa are the best of all the Sims.

This is absolute ********. The track surface detail in GT Sport is absolutely on the same level as any other sim and graphically it completely embarrasses them on every level. It's laser scanned just like the rest and PD has built an engine that is wildy more efficient than what anyone else has done on any platform. Not to mention, capturing the detail of a track surface isn't really that complicated anyway. They can dynamically tesselate geo on the fly among many other things, there is absolutely no reason to think they can't support the same amount of track detail as these other sims which aren't pushing PC hardware to the limit at all. I definitely prefer to drive in a sim that looks absolutely incredible, drives incredible, and runs at 60 fps, instead of driving in a play-doe world at 180fps on a PC.

Having driven both many times now, driving the new Le Mans in GT Sport and then driving Le Mans in Asseto Corsa is like a bad joke. The surface detail of the track is absolutely on the same level if not better in GT Sport. The immersion with the graphics and sound isn't even comparable.

The graphics in Asseto Corsa are absolutely trash compared to GT Sport. AC looks about 5-10 years behind graphically. Every single circuit just has a giant ambient light to illuminate the scene, it's embarrassingly bad.
