Heck even I can't ignore the fact that GT Sport has it's issues and flaws. However, you tend to ignore them when you are enjoying the game. At least in my experience anyway.

And that's how it is and should be with every game. All games have flaws, some admittedly greater than others. However, what people find objectionable varies from person to person.

Shift 2 was unquestionably an AWFUL game. I still bought and completed it on two platforms. I will never make the argument that the game was good, but I enjoyed it enough and the problems didn't make it bad enough for me to stop. I'm in a massive minority, but such is life.

Enjoying games with flaws is fine. One could argue it's the norm. However, when people can't take a step back and say "yeah, that doesn't bother me but I can see how that might be an issue for some people" and insist that a game is the best thing since the McLaren F1 that is a problem.

Blind adoration is really very little better than flame bait. Anyone who can't see any flaws in a game they're playing clearly doesn't like it enough to pay any real attention to it.

Personally, for all it's issues and flaws I would still buy GTS. Perhaps not now, and perhaps not for full price, but it seems entertaining enough that it's worth at least some amount of money. The thing that might stop me is the PS+ requirement. That's a lot of additional money on top of the game price, and unless I can find enough value in other ways to justify it then it's probably a deal breaker.

However there is a difference between a flaw and something which is flawed straight up. GT Sport isn't flawed completely, but there are flaws most definitely. In many cases it's about minimising the flaws, so as to not make a "flawed" game. Project Cars was flawed because the physics were quite iffy; although very solid when they worked.

I think a lot of the problem that GTS has as well is that it's "flaws" are kind of structural to the game. The small car and track list, the always online aspect, the cramped single player, the limited range of track conditions. These are designed into the game, and are unlikely to change significantly without more money spent on DLC.

When the flaws are bugs one can hope that they're patched, find ways to work around them or simply avoid those situations. But when the flaws are so inherent to the basic gameplay (and are clearly there by design) it becomes hard to work around them, and in many ways they can make an otherwise attractive game largely unplayable. The physics in pC are a good example, and another is probably the online only save in GTS; for some people that's going to simply mean that no matter how good the rest of the game is the restriction on access and progress will make any play session frustrating or impossible.

MXH

I'm rather surprised that the series still manages to sell purely on its' name alone.

And rightly so. The few people that owned the old GT games and are super competitive into online are not the majority of purchasers.

GT:Sport is catering to a tiny minority of players. You know how many people play car games on PC? Now you now how few of those play iRacing? That's ratio we are talking about.

Sadly Kaz and Sony knew the millions of loyal past GT fans would buy many hundreds of thousands of copies sight unseen - they counted on it.

Many of those copies cannot be returned, the digital copies cannot be returned - so Sony will get to keep the money, but the very few people left playing online will mean the GT:Sport servers will go dark much sooner than later due to lack of interest.

Most of us game players have no interest in eSports - we lead busy fulfilled lives and this game was supposed be an entertaining diversion, not all consuming, and waiting around for 2 races spread over an hour is time consuming.

I just wish somewhere a wealthy class action lawyer that grew up on GT is looking at this fiasco of GT:Sport he has bought and is trying to figure out a way to take Sony, PD and Kaz to the cleaners - that is how much I dislike what I have bought since I have no chance of getting my money back. I wish someone would sue Sony and PD and win, just so I can feel better :)

Sorry Imari, don't mean to break your post up, but this bit is what signed me off, I haven't bothered to buy the game.
If at some point a retailer was giving them away, I would still shy away, mostly because of the PS+ deal. :( (not to mention all the other stuff I don't like...)
I don't believe it's fair to HAVE to pay to race online, be it with friends or in an open lobby with people you have just met. There are games out there that still do not require this, you may be "online" to play, but not with PS+ in hand.
And I just watched a short video someone posted with a Sony boss saying, "you do NOT have to be online to play a PS4 game"? Well, there you go. lol ;)

Other than free to play games, what PS4 games allow you to play online without PS+?

Please don't discredit me :), I haven't tried any racing games.
But I have a lot of time invested in MGSV from when it was launched, a lot of online time and no PS+
Have also more recently been playing the hell out of Ghost Recon, again online, but I haven't tried to connect with friends, so this one is still up in the air to how correct my statement was. Apologies if it is found to be a "pay up" deal. :)

Discredit? I just asked a question as I was somewhat confused over what you had posted.
From my own understanding, to play online on the PS4 you are required to pay for PS+ (PS+ now acting like Xbox Live). So other than some F2P games (I'm assuming) that might offer free online play, all PS4 games will require PS+ to play online.

I think it's fair to avoid this game if due to it being required to be online to play pretty much any of the content, but to say it's unfair it requires PS+ seems to be somewhat misguided

Was so close to picking GTS up today so glad i came across this post and the ISR review. I think PD will get this game on point but have a feeling that's in 2 years time.

It very much depends on what you want from the game. If its good and effortless online racing its ready. Ive said this before and i say it again - GT sport was aimed to be online racer for the masses and its well on its way to just that.

Yeah, sorry...I didn't take it as being discredited, the smilie face didn't convey my friendly thought very well. :)

As I said, I'm not 100% sure on Wildlands, I am online when playing, but not with friends, only solo campaign.
And as far as I'm aware, MetalGear still has online components that are not reliant on a paid subscription to PS+.
There may or may not be other, these are the only other games I run, Oh, and TLOU, on my PS4.

The issue of paying is only an unfair add-on in my eyes, I know there are 100's or 1000's who would disagree, but my biggest gripe is really all to do with my limited internet. Trying to run in lobby's on GT6 was a nightmare when you only get 1.1-1.2Mbps speed. :(

Final Fantasy Realm Reborn. It's a monthly subscription game so no Plus is needed.

Ahh ok, that's the MMO? I guess MMO's and F2P games are exempt?

From what I can tell Wildlands single player is single player and so you can play without PS+. MGSV is the same (I'm a huge MGS nerd), MGSV has online components, but they are not required to play the game, however to play FOB stuff and MGO (Metal Gear Online) you will need PS+. Both of those are extra to the main story mode however and aren't much fun thanks to F2P mechanics Konami crusted them up with... sorry, bit off-topic!

But yeah, I agree having to be constantly connected online makes GT Sport pretty lame, especially given how poor their server up time has been.

But the masses do not want to only race online.

That's the point.

If you want to only race online, go do iRacing. Why butcher yet another title and create an every shrinking pool of players?

Or maybe we can try to start a petition?

I haven't played much to be able to give this the full thumbs up, but for me Custom races is a pretty good alternative to the usual career mode.

My own initial impressions of GTS.

A fair enough review in the main. I would agree with most of what you said, particularly about the fwd car handling, but would take issue with your M4 launch comment. They simply do launch straight down the road clean and expecting the drama of rear end to kick out during launch in a straight line is a fallacy.

That's a single example, and was with all aids turned off.

That every car in GTS does the exact same thing is an issue, and yes without any form of aids an M4 will do it (as will just about any RWD car).

Game is getting really average to bad reviews, which is what i expected and what i think it deserves. The lack of content is unacceptable. PD has more resources and time to make this game than the competition and doesnt deliver the same amount of features.

The core of the game is great, i love the fact that the game is focused on online racing, but there's not enough content here. They need to deliver DLC fast, and a lot of it, and preferentially free.

If in one year we have the double number of tracks and a lot more cars id say the game would be the best GT ever made.

I apreciate it is a single example but we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Whatever about live rear axle Mustangs and the like, the M4 which is the example you used will not step out at launch with its aids disabled. In fact you cannot activate launch control without deactivating DSC. My own BMW actually produces more torque than a M4 and it's not a fight to launch it in a straight line.

IGN 7.5/10

"Lacking" is what all these racing games have.

IGN missed two of the biggest things that stands out in Gran Turismo Sport.

1) Soundtrack: a mesmerizing list of diverse songs that fits this game to a "T" I love it.
2) Scapes: ability to photograph your liveries on exotic cars placing them on many real landscapes across the world.

The guy who wrote this article was hyping the game up before now, I guess he didn't read ANYTHING about the game before it came out. (tl;dr He was expecting GT7 and hates online gaming)

Also a funny thing to note is he based the "apparently" part off of Amazon user reviews, didn't bother checking other valid critical reviews. If you look at critical reviews instead, you'll find that apparently the game's doing just fine. 3 points behind GT6 is still pretty fine.
