That was what really surprised me. GT has always been good with lighting, when Forza's car always looked plastic. However in this trailer everything looks decidedly matt and washed out. I'm hoping there some reason for this, as you touched upon.

I agree it's early days and we need to see more but after so many years in development I'm worried because seriously NFS is a quantum leap in realism and expert lighting over everyone else. I just expected more from a first party dev with full access to push the PS4.

^ Looks like GT6, slightly more polished.

^Looks pretty impressive IMO, even better in motion.

Yup, the lighting looks bland. It doesn't look like it has any GI and the AO also looks off. Shadows are very light and thats why cars dont exactly look planted to the road. But damn those trees have taken a huge step forward (probably the highest LOD reserved for photomode) etc. Very weird seeing some very high quality elements when the curb on the karussel still has very low poly count.

I'm expecting that things will improve as development continues but even at its current level, it doesn't look bad just very average.

Did you even read what description says?

The latest instalment of the Gran Turismo franchise, which as of March 2015 has sold over 75 million copies worldwide, is
coming to PlayStation®4 with the name “Gran Turismo SPORT”!

The graphics, sound and physics engine will be the most realistic ever experienced in a driving simulator thanks to the new
platform and the new technologies, but that alone would be a too obvious improvement: the way driving
games are played will also undergo a huge revolution with “Gran Turismo Sport”.
This is a vision that invokes the rebirth of motorsports.

I'm 100% sure it's new GT (aka GT7)

I really hope You're right :)

Other than the graphics looking all pretty and realistic (which impressed me), it doesn't seem all that interesting to me. Since it's PD I feel the fun factor will be lacking, even for GT Sport...

That's one of the many reasons GT hasn't been worth much in a decade. If it isn't enjoyable to play, looking pretty and nice physics aren't worth much. If that's all that mattered, I might just as well watch videos of racing.

Oh, but you see, they aren't really a part of the fanbase anymore. They abandoned GT as a series a very long time ago, but they still wander into the GT forums to speak trash and judge a game over a 2 minute trailer.

Two-minute trailer and a decade of inferior products. GT5 and GT6 were sub-par and leave no room for confidence in a satisfying product.

Well...GT5P description:

The award-winning Gran Turismo franchise returns with its 5th installment, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, exclusively for PLAYSTATION®3 on Blu-ray Disc & PlayStation®Network. With its signature realism and unrivaled physics, this highly anticipated precursor to Gran Turismo 5 continues to blur the line between simulation and reality.

PD.

Because PD.

"the way driving games are played will also undergo a huge revolution with “Gran Turismo Sport”.

Does it mean?

Agreed. Maybe PD should start making movies instead of games. Since GT4, GT hasn't been fun (notably GT5 and GT6).

Edited because I made myself look like a fool, and contradicted myself

A decade of inferior products, huh?

Wasn't GT4 released in 2005? That was by no means an inferior product.

Please try harder to find your information next time
March 2005. It's October 2015 now, so technically he's correct, but only if you count the major releases and think they sucked. Personally, I really liked GT5P and GTPSP (more than 5/6).

Online functions.
I think it's common practice now-days. Pretty much all games that have online have a network beta test before release.

Don't they call these network stress tests?

Betas are something that are close to release, this feels like a prolouge for me. What's the difference?

If it's a Beta than GT7 will be released 2016

if it's a prolouge than we're looking at 2017.

It's been over a decade since GT4's North American release, while the game actually showed up in 2004 in Japan.

Please try harder to find your information next time.

If it is a stress test, they call it a stress test.
If they want to see if their matchmaking services and general game structures are working properly, they call it a beta test.
They'll probably have a couple of different types of tournaments/championships that run for a short period.
Think how hard it is to have 20-so random competitors from the same (or different countries) to dispute something that goes for more than one day, like a championship. They need to have ways to make that work, and to know they work they have to test it.

There's no GT7.

Yeah, I guess what I did was in poor form.

Oops.

Then the game should be released in 2016 if that's the case.

I think we can establish this: We've all been taken a little bit out of our comfort zones with this announcement, because, even though the name 'GT Sport' was very clearly in the pipeline, us GT traditionalists were expecting GT7 regardless, because that's what PD traditionally does, right?

Well, I'd rather the Gran Turismo image was revived than kept to the same conventions for the next few years. I do believe that GT Sport is the very revive that is needed. Whether or not the structure of the game itself will be radically changed is something we can't really jump to conclusions with yet.

Long story short, provided there are tons of cars and tracks and both online/offline functionality, along with all the other bells and whistles we expect from a GT game (such as photo travel and the customization), I see reason to accept GT Sport as a reboot to the franchise and not a spin off.

Nothing yet states that this is a 'taster' or a 'prologue'. I think we have reason to assume that this will be a fully fledged game. The fact there is a BETA is complimentary to the games efforts. Its the first time the devs have released a BETA. As a result, it shows progress. PD want to move the franchise forward. From what we've seen so far, I think they are doing just that.

Remember when Kaz said that the next GT game would match the very era that we live in (i.e. 2015/2016)? Well he is (for the time being at least) a man of his word :)

BTW, that place's like a warzone, what with MS and Sony fanboys at each others' throats. Not pretty.

It's just like here without the cloak and daggers, but after a while here you get to know who's going to knock what product regardless of how it looks or what they know.

Having read the blog post I'm more at ease that PD havent just gone down the online route, but at this stage it appears to be the main focus, and that'll suck.

I think, with it being Paris, the home of the FIA, they just got that information out of the way first, but who knows... PSX is not long now and I expect a lot more info there.

I think it's just new GT(7), with GT Sport name, coming late 2016, with early 2016 network beta test. And it's actually a good news - people can taste what is full GT Sport is all about earlier and PD can test on-line capabilities, and don't name it "Prologue" anymore.

Difference is that "Prologue" was separate product. While GT Sport will have network beta test before release. And I really think it will be free.

I don't see the online route as a bad thing, it means they'll have to redo the servers rather than keep the patchy (to be polite) GT6 online systems.

Yeah I agree with this.

Still think they did a poor job of telling us what this is, I'll still bet they'll call the final game GT7 (age 7-77 is a hint)

Agreed. Why would they release a BETA for a Prologue? That's like saying Gran Turismo Sport Prologue Prologue! xD

Agreed. Kaz talked like he is in front of racing drivers, rather than gamers.
He thought that "collaboration with FIA" and "the winner of each championship will be coronated in the same way as a real-life race winner, at a prize-giving ceremony held by the FIA" will strike the audience in their hearts, but it just didn't work :lol::lol:

While I hope they do invest their time making great AI routines so there's a solid /offline/ standard game mode, it's understandable with the size e-sports have gotten that online/multiplayer should be the focus. Every Kaz interview, the GT Academy project pointed how they feel racing "games" are the genre that can be more than just "a game", and bridge reality/simulation into its own "sport".

I know internet connection quality requirements and a bunch of other factors make that suck to experience for a lot of people (myself included), but there's a reason why iRacing still gets so much praise to this date: when the structure works, it's a great, accessible way to participate in a motorsport.
And that's what we may have here delivered in a much, much more accessible platform.

Then the game should be released in 2016 if that's the case.

Maybe, even if beta starts february/march, we may see an "early 2017" or just 2017 release. There's no fixed "beta to final" window in development.
