Well, I finally got to a Best Buy that had the GT5 Demo. The moron at the store knew nothing about what Rated_M3 had found (I went to the same store as he did). I had to tell them that I already knew that they had the disc installed on one of their PS3's. "Oh", he replied, "you must be talking about the PS3 SLIM we have over there" (points to another Set-up at the next aisle over). Sure enough, it was there I spent the next hour and a half standing in front of a 22" screen, craning my head upwards, looking at GT5, playing it to my heart's content.
The Beginning of the game has a screen that shows you several options. The Icons are similar to GT5P's. The only two options you could choose was the Arcade Mode and the Time Trial Mode. I started with the Arcade mode and moved immediately to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I selected the only available Nascar vehicle - #24 Jeff Gordon, clicked on the professional level and proceeded to start the race. Little to my surprise, I was all over the track (My being used to the wheel and not so familiar with the joysticks since I played NFS Undercover). I hadn't noticed that tuning was available until after I had started the race and looked like a drunk trying to control the car. I exited the race and clicked on the "Tuning" Icon. Eureka! There was the ability to turn on and off the driving line, adjust the level of driving (I automatically set it to PRO) , adjust the traction control, active steering, and TIRES! Well after discovering that I was driving on S3's, I switched up to get Jeff's car running on R3's. I re-entered the race and had a BLAST! The car handled much better, the Physics were very much like the GT5 Time Trials with the Nissan 370Z's that we had played earlier in the year. They were crisp, responsive and gave the appropriate traction that one would expect from driving a sports car IRL (Only this one had MUCH more torque and HP, LOL ). I DID try to "Pit" at indy with this car, but the Pit side of pit lane had fencing on the left side that would not let you into the individual pit lane slots. This, I am sure, is going to be a really nice feature in GT5, as they have delayed all information about the Pit Stops to date.
I also tried the #24 Nascar on the Time Trial Mode at Indy and turned a 0:51.43 for a hot lap (Good enouh for me! ). The timer on the Demo only allowed for about 2.5 laps, regardless of how skilled you were. It was simply impossible to finish a 3 lap race. The same held true with the Arcade mode as well. There were no "controls' for lap count or for active daylight/nighttime driving, nor did I find any "options" to change the controller settings/buttons in the demo. I did notice (for all of you Nascar Fans out there), that the car takes on the same "lift off going into the turn drift" as they appear to do IRL. I used this technique to take advantage of the driving line against that "pesky" Home Depot car, and the infamous M&M's car LOL. The lift and go technique worked very well on the IMS track, and I suspect that with the full game release, additional tuning options will be available to "personalize" your own Nascar Ride. It was a pleasure driving most all of the cars available in the game demo albeit some were more "needy" of driving skills than others.
Next, I tried the Merc AMG SLS at Nurburgring. The Demo spit up some pixel blanks and I couldn't see the track, so I exited and tried again (HOPEFULLY, WE won't experience this Glitch when the full version is released. I have a feeling that the demo was put together rather quickly for this kind of "dropout" occurring in a PD Game. The second time I tried the 'ring with the SLS, it was a RIOT! That car is shweet! I really didn't have too much trouble getting by the other cars and getting into the lead. Unfortunately, I could only run about 30% of the course before the timer stopped my race. The AI seemed somewhat "passive in the races I ran except for one - The Ferrari Enzo at Rome. When I ran that one, I had some "Nascar Rubbing" going on early on in the race. When I missed the apex in one turn, a ZR1 Corvette attempted to pass me on the outside of a turn. When I blocked his advance, he spun me out - much like Tony Steward did recently, So the Game definitely has progressed since GT4 and GT5Prologue - at least as far as the Physics and A.I. I also tried the 1969 Corvette Stingray with limited success at Rome although all of the cars in the game demo were "premium, there was no option to change the driving view (which was set in the "bumper Cam" mode. Knowing that in B-Spec (or Director Mode as we have seen it from the game shows), the A.I will be both passive and aggressive, it will definitely will add a bit of flavor to the racing.
The next race I tried was Tuscany. The options for that race were the Nissan GTR, or the Citroen C4. I Opted for the C4. The track texture feels just like gravel under the tires, but was surprisingly manageable with slight drifting techniques and feathering the gas. It is a bit forgiving, not like the Grand Canyon dirt course in GT4. The Tuscany Track was the only one that had day/night driving conditions. Yes, day to night was accelerated, probably more for the purpose of the demo, rather than a full 10 lap race (I could only get through about 1.8 laps on Tuscany before the timer stole my success against the car behind me. The Day/ Night effects are marvelous! when the sun sets, the headlights come on and the visibility shortens the length of you vision). Not so much as restricting your speed, as the map and the driving line still remained on (Let me clarify this - The Driving line was kept on because I was not familiar with the course).
I used the Nissan Motul Z to race with other Super GT's at Indy and found that they have pretty good responsiveness. I also Noted that The Nascar Cars were more adept to turning out better lap times than the superGT Series cars at the same track. It's a shame that they didn't have any LM Cars available to try out. Also too,( I might point out), that there was NO damage shown in the demo. Not that it was my intent to see how much "Mayhem" I could cause ( I'll wait until FatLeadFoot and Rick are at DSS Racing to find that one out, LOL ), it was just an important aspect of the game that I would have liked to have experienced and written about.
My final observation involved driving the Lamborghini Gallardo at Tokyo R246. Now THAT presented a challenge. The gallardo is a sled and is not cooperative to responding quickly to steering changes - or braking for that matter. I would say that a track like Daytona SS or IMS is mostly suited for this car - but with mods I couldn't put on the stock vehicle. Perhaps we'll turn this beast over to the tuning experts once the game comes out and let them "have at it".
All in all, a very well spent 90 minutes standing there playing the new Demo. I put the controller down and tried to walk away only to find that my legs were nearly frozen in place (I hadn't move them since I started up the demo - it was an intoxicating experience. My advice - Go out and try it if you get the chance - it's a lot like GT5P, but on steroids and with much better GRAPHICS!
As of this edit, Only a little more than 50 days to the release of this great title!!!
