I will be extremely interested in sale figures when GT5 finally comes out.
I am thinking these delays will hurt more then do any good.
Gaming has changed.
When I first got my PS1, everyone talked about GT, I mean everyone, it was all the hype.
But now, it is different, I am betting no where near the sales as previously, while it will still sell well, it will be a flop. Flop because it will not do as good as expected.
First of all, a long development time is not the same as a delay. Second, I don't think the sales figures will suffer in any way because of the long development time. It doesn't make sense, should people suddently decide not to buy the game just because they have been waiting for it for a long time? Sure, there may be people growing out of interest, but that happens all the time with all games regardless of how long it took to develop it. I'd say the sales figures of GT5 will depend more on how it is promoted rather than how long it took to develop it, new players can always be attracted with good marketing.
Although I believe that gaming has changed, I think it has changed in a different way than you are suggesting. I think each generation of a game is going to last longer than what have been the case previously, because the development time is so much longer today and because the quality of the games in terms of graphics is at a standard where it is actually going to look good even in ten years to come (although the 3D part might look a lot better in ten years than what it does now). I think the games of today (and the near future) have a potential to sell over a longer period of time and I wouldn't be surprised to see Gran Turismo 5 still on the shelves in ten years. Provided that there is no GT6 released of course...
