After some time to think about this whole mess I have come up with these thoughts...

+
- There is nothing unreasonable with the fact that PD was only able to make 200 premium models.

- From the articles and general release date fluctuations over the years it is reasonable to assume that the development process was met with many challenges and setbacks.

- GT5 will still be more than worth a purchase to anybody who likes cars and is not a die hard Forza or PC sim fanboy.

-
- GTHD/GT5/GT should not have been marketed AT ALL by Sony or PD until they had something substantial to show. This way the "wait" would be reduced. This is 99% Sony's fault.

- PD lied to us. They should have been honest from the get go and said that there will only be a certain number of premium cars and a certain number of standard cars. Realistically this is a bad PR move, but so is the situation we are in now. And people, no matter how stupid and selfish will remember what is most recent, not what was said 2 years ago.

- They should not have bothered with GT5p and just crammed away at GT5. This is also true for GTHD. They should have stayed in the dark. You may not think this is a good idea, but it would have given PD more time to work. Maybe one demo like the TT demo to get feedback on the physics, but that is it.

- GTPSP got in the way. IMO the dev work should have been outsourced. With PD doing the physics and structural work and the other team with the modeling and logistics.

For the future:

- I bet PD has learned a LOT! Like more than we can imagine. GT6 will most likely come in 2-3 years. On the PS3 or as a launch title for the PS4. PD will have all their models ready to go and the process will be much easier. Very few things will have to made from scratch.

Its hard to swallow this but its true.

The PS3 was released late 2006. That means PD didn't get thier hands on development kits until probably late 2006 or early 2006. So Nov 2010 is about 4 years from the time they got the development kits to GT5 release. Thats about 50 cars a year. Turn 10/Forza models about 100 a year, but its obvious their cars aren't as accurate or detailed as PD's.

Nice point as well. As Kaz has said the premium cars are better suited for Playstation 4 you can understand that they must have run into technical dfficulties.

Exactly. But was it worth the 5.5 year wait from GT4? Thats yet to be seen. If its just 200 premium cars 20 tracks and bare bones offlien and online modes then it wasnt worth the wait. But if the physics engine is amazing and the offlien and online modes are awesome and deep then the 200 premium cars can be easily overlooked.

I really hope GT6 is released on the PS4 and not PS3. DLC for GT5 only, please.

Also I hope the premium car models seen in GT5 stay for PS4. They look good enough to me, they can only benefit from some extra anti aliasing that the PS4 could offer. Just keep the GT5 premium cars for Playstation 4 and GT6 and add weather and increase the car count on track from 16 to like 32 or even higher

This whole time people were upset, but acceptable, of the delay and the long development time because they thought we're getting a 1000 cars that were as detailed as GT5P cars. People used pictures of these cars to prove the wait is worth it when you'll be driving these beautiful cars for years to come.
Now we find out that 800 of the 1000 will not look half as good as what we were shown for the 4-5 years. That's where PD screwed up, big time.

This summs up the whole dilemma very well.👍

totally agree, pisses me off that they dont care old cars but the new cars cockpits screws are in right angle but the old ones dont have them at all.

+1 when I saw the e3 trailer at the end of the Sony presentation I thought, 'my god the wait and hype have all been worth it.' The day/night cycles, the look of the rally cars at night, etc totally blew me away. The frustration of the past couple of years vanished in an instant. This just seems like a slap in the face. We ended up with leaderboard cars in FM and that is all every one uses online. I can see the premium cars being the only cars people will use in GT5. A lot of people have complained about PD's marketing strategy over the past 12 months with their lack of info. This isn a perfect example of that. Still going to be an epic game. The wait for the definitive racing game continues.

What are you talking about some old cars will be premium its going to be mixed up.

People need to be a bit more positive. GT5 will still have more content then just about any racing game to date. Most NFS games barely even have 100 cars and out of that 100 only about 30 are not riced out imports. Yes FM3 has more cars with interior views and better sounds. But it will also have less tracks, no day night cycles, worse graphics, and to me the big one, ONLY 8 cars on track. I really have no idea how the PC sim community plays FM. At least GT5 has 16 at once.

Sure all this sucks... but is it really THAT bad... no. Deal with it.

It's like we get two games GT4HD with 800 upscaled cars, and 200+ cars in GT5 with half the tracks...

I am down with that... but to add to your story, i think there will be more tracks than that... I hope most of the track from previous GT will be featured in GT5... I HOPE!

...if not :( i will still buy the game, as my part of the investment to GT6.

First off don't hate imports some people love them, the only reason i got into GT was because of the high number of import cars. And another thing, NFS game's take 1 year to make GT5 is 6 years in the making.

I could have sworn we were told that there would be standard and premium cars at the same time we learned there would be about 1000. The fact that we delusionally mis-interpreted standard having no interior modelled is on us.

+1+1

This is the issue here really, what they should have done is announce them in the opposite order

FIRST have made a speech about the standard - premium issue and explained it in full a fortnight before E3, then have given us the release date when they did and the impact of the standard - premium issue would have been ignored due to the release date

BUT what they did was give us pure joy in the form of the release date, THEN hit hard on us with the announcement of the differences of the standard - premium cars.

The joy of the release date has been dulled considerably due to the blow of no cockpit view in standard cars, which we were all hoping for, let's face it.

One should punish before rewarding, rather than vice-versa

[/Philisophical attempt of explanation]

Actually, PD tried to tell us there would be lot of cars with no interiors. People here just refused to believe it, back when they announced the March 31 release in Japan.

Prologue was necessary, and I don't think it in any way stole dev time from GT5. It's a piece of the puzzle, and they just decided to let us in on the fun a little early. Obviously they needed the work on the online portion, because public matching will be a part of the final game, and there are still issues with connections in Prologue. Just imagine what PD learned, not only from seeing us drive online, but getting reactions.

Even GTPSP, now that we know about standard cars, was probably more necessary than we thought. They did have to re-process all of those cars, so it's possible that porting it to the PSP was a way to QA a big part of the game.

The fact that we delusionally mis-interpreted standard having no interior modelled is on us.

Well to be fair, we go with what we are handed. Kazunori's answers to interviewers are often open for multiple interpretations. If you would dig in this very thread you'd find people comparing stories written up by eurogamer/ign/gamespot/other journalists from a single press event, and they'll all have a different take on Kazunori's answers.

Where did PD and KAZ say that Standard cars don't have a 'cockpit view' he said 'interior' in a translation. Notice, Interior was also stated to be, the INNARDS of the car. Innards can mean beyond the wheels, the engine, exhaust piping, chassis, frame etc. That doesn't look like the cockpit to me. Unless someone here can PROVE that there is NO CABIN or 'cockpit' view in the standard cars all we have is theories.

There's that much confusion that I haven't properly read any of the GT5 section recently because there's so much negativity. We might aswell just wait until the bloody game comes out and then see what's on it because all PD give us is crappy and quite evidently mis-leading information. 👎

I'm just looking on the bright side, thinking positive and waiting eagerly until November 2nd. :D

While you may well be correct, this is just another interpretation of the facts and we cannot be sure until the game comes out

Just out of interest can someone with GT4 go in a car with the roof down and show us what the inside of the cockpit looks like IN A REPLAY e.g. Mazda MX-5

I want to see if they modelled the interiors at all in GT4, as I do not have a PS2 at hand for a long time.

- PD lied to us. They should have been honest from the get go and said that there will only be a certain number of premium cars and a certain number of standard cars.

But PD didn't lie to us. They said that there'd be a limited number of "Premium" cars way back with GTHD. When GTHD was about to be GT5, they said that there'd be Highly detailed "Premium" cars with interiors and all that, and then there would be "Standard" cars that weren't as highly detailed....which is exactly what we're getting with GT5.

My opinion on this is:

1. A Blu-ray disc only holds 25GB on a single layer. And there's been no mentioned of it, but with 200 Premium cars, GT5 just might be on a dual layer 50GB BD. I would assume that the premium cars take up a lot of space on a disc. where as the standard cars don't. It could be that most of the standard cars become premiums shortly after the release, but there just wasn't enough room. (For all we know, they could have used the first 6-layer 200GB disc)

2. IT'S A THOUSAND CARS! That's a one with three zeros. Where else are you going to get that many cars in a racing game? I'd REALLY like to know. And They're not "GT4 quality" as some of you have been thinking. on the GT website it said that ALL cars have had updated graphics and ALL cars will be able to be rolled over and dented and stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if, unless you used an HD TV it'd be hard to tell the difference between the Premium cars and the Standard cars. At least from the outside.

3. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. Just stop whining about it.

There are 200 premium cars. That's a lot. That was enough to make GT3 a classic, that is still some people's favorite. That's more than enough to keep us occupied for a while. I just had a friend mention how on his quest for 100% in GT4, he only ever acquired 180 cars.

You can only use one at a time, and by the time you get tired of the ones we do have, PD could be there with DLC.

I did have a thought about Prologue though. What if those 70+ cars (which we already know to be premium) are separate from the initial 200 cars in GT5? Prologue owners would basically already have their hands on the first DLC pack. I think it would be a little disappointing is they gave us over 1/3 of the premium cars over 2 years ago. If they are already slightly over 200 cars, without the Prologue cars, then that would push the Premium count to nearly 300, and set the stage for more DLC down the line.

Most of the iconic cars in Prologue have a replacement, or better model, such as the GT-R Vspec, ZR1, ACR, 458 Italia, 599GTO, etc... meaning those who didn't have Prologue, and didn't want to pay for DLC, wouldn't go without some version of those cars.

Actually the game is on three disks, of what sort I do not know

The proof is at home, and I am stuck here (Boarding School) until the end of the last week of June...

I have a handy stats half-page in French of what we had been told up to then

Unfortuantley you're just gotta trust me until I can provide the proof, I am sorry in advance

Why would it be on 3 discs? I mean...those super compacity Blu-rays were intended for games. Maybe it's 3 200GB discs? Maybe each premium car takes up an entire Gig of space. *shrug* if it is three discs it'll probably be: Standard, Premium and Arcade

I personally have no idea, why its on three discs, they just are

This sounds plausible, but I think it will be Photomode and Replay centre, Career, Arcade

I agree that PD never really lied to us, but they could have been WAY more open about the subject.

About the used disc space. Somewhere these past few days I read it al fitted on a single layer Blu-ray. (Models and such do not take that much space, sounds and movies do)
I would normally provide a source, but I don't feel like reading all these depressing posts again :P
