You guys know the movie "Grand Prix" which was directed in 1966?

It`s a movie about the F1 Championship with alot racing scenes.

Why am I mentioning this? Because they didn`t used real F1 cars in the movie, they used F3 cars, what means that they couldn`t record the sound of those cars.
So they had to dub those cars by themselves. Look at the result:

I wonder how those guys managed to make so awesome sounding cars in the 60s, while PD can`t do the same with a much more advanced technology and with greater ressources :?

um im sorry, but this the benchmark that PD must achieve in GT5, and i dont think thats happening anytime soon. When i get goosebumps playing Gran Turismo like i do when i watch this movie (with the volume WAY up :D), then i will know that PD as accomplished audio excellence...

I mean JUST LISTEN TO THAT 917 WAIL!!!!!

Gotta use this one :sly:

Dubbing either sounds or voices onto a movie is one thing, creating an interactive audio engine is another!

The Z06 sound in Prologue wasn't too bad, but it was a bit zingy and didn't have enough bass. If they can get it to the kind of bass we had in the 370z in the Time Trail, then things will be looking up. In a few months we'll be zooming around this track, Tsukuba ( one of my favs) in GT5! Just hope the audio is as nice - with a exhaust upgrade that is :)
The trailing throttle sounds in a GT game could use some work.

Definitely not a stock Z06

Probably my biggest single gripe with GT sound to date is that it is completely linear. Whether you are trailing the throttle or accelerating, there's no gurgles, crackles, backfires, overrun, nothing, nada... It's boring, dull, and repetitive.

Listen and weep. I think they do onboard sound fairly well, but there are big problems whenever the camera is in a position where the exhaust should be heard.

To me it sounds like GT cannot seem to replicate the clear, throaty engine sound that comes out of an exhaust. Sound is muffled. It sounds zingy and vibrational, but the best part is missing completely on most cars.

Small snippet of the G4TV live stream Nascar. Action kicks in at 2:40, sound is not in sync though. Pretty loud gear box whine, which you can also hear in the real car. Quality is pretty crappy, compressed twice, but it gives you an idea

You can also hear snippets of the car driving by in the menus.
And standard physics, R2 tyres with traction control at 5 :)

They all sound synthetic and alike...:guilty:
...and corvette-viper-ford gt part...omg epic fail:yuck:
I'm really not in the mood for another debate, because we've been through plenty of those, but this is just depressing...I hope full game features new samples or completely new audio engine...or anything but this again...👎

Yes it is tragic I am affraid. There are a couple of cars that spring to mind that sound ok, Clio tuned, BNR skyline, Type R, but all sadly in need of a complete overhaul!!

The biggest problem is the sound library is limited, and many sounds are similar to those from back in GT3...

I can hear the rotary sound from the RX8 in some of those samples above of cars from the outside.

I just think sometimes they try do too many cars, and so start re-using or mixing samples, and they just stand out badly.

Epic sounds in GT:

SL55 AMG in GT Concep (later used a generic one in GT4 which was horrible)

Audi RS6 in GT4P (iirc), later used a generic one in GT4, and GTC before GT4P, which was horrible)

BMW Z4 in GT5P (sounds just like my real life one, nearly (the sample that runs from 5000-7000rpm needs to have the hard rasp edge start at 4000rpm)

Fail sounds in GT:

C5 Z06 Vette in GT3 (oh dear!)

M3 CSL in GT4 (hoover in GT vs pulsing fog-horn on steroids in real life)

NFS games and plenty of others all manage to do good sounds, so it's not a challenge that is impossible, it's just that GT have been lazy with it, and it seems like it's still an area where they are being lazy.

Just look how many times we were told AI had improved in the past for it to remain just as crap as it always had done.

And the sounds are not a thing that have improved either, the Ruf 911 Turbo 993 back in GT2 sounded epic, as did the TVR's!

When a car sounds good, they sampled it in real life. When it sounds crap, it's their mixed/synthed real recordings...

I can't blame them in a way, with 900+ cars to go at, but when they do things like the SL55 AMG and RS6 (both very memorable engine sounds), and clearly have good samples, they then go and use generic ones and ruin them, then that isn't good.

I think the important thing they SHOULD do is look at what cars have very distinctive sounds, and make sure they sound right!

I have reinstalled Shift onto my PS3 after several months now and iam really impressed. I downloaded the 5 new cars, including the Doge Challenger, Doge Charger, Ford Mustang (Shelby GT500) and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which all sound awesome, though i doupt they sound like the real thing.

But other than that they are great and you get good feedback of what the engine does and in addition you get some nice sounds from the transmission and stuff like that. BUT the most impressive thing ist the sound of the wastegate, when you install a turbocharger into the Ford Escord. It sounds almost like a group B rally car. Its really awesome!

So did the sony "bouncers" tell everyone a e3 to use that track and that car and those settings? OR was it just the walk ups and non media people? I saw standard physics and AT forced on that guy.

Just listen to that NASCAR engine. Pathetic, wrong, and wrong. If PD think that sounds acceptable for an 800hp v8 with no noise insulation, then there's not much hope.

Who else smiled whilst watching this? I did, and I had butterflies in my stomach!

lol, are you serious?

I know. together we can be strong. And just listen to that NASCAR engine. Pathetic, wrong, and wrong. If PD think that sounds acceptable for an 800hp v8 with no noise insulation, then there's not much hope.

mmm..I slightly disagree. First of all, i will hold final judgement until I hear it through my surround sound system...but the tones in that video seem very similar to to a real-life NASCAR imo. I give PD props for now, judging on the video quality, etc.

fair enough. Hypothetically speaking though, I believe wrong engine sounds are the audio equivalent of having wrong car models which look nothing like the real thing. No super graphics card, or HD LED Television is going to make up for it. I can appreciate a great sounding engine on a crappy youtube compression through laptop speakers:

Compare this, a quick driveby of a single NASCAR engine:

....to 2:44 seconds in the above GT5 stream capture. Then tell me it sounds okay :/

This. Even if they record the engine sounds in different RPM ranges, the problem is that they don´t record additional noises, like the ones you mentioned.

I heard the sound in the standard cars trailer and :yuck: what a shame. I guess the graphics can the upscaled, but the sound samples are doomed.

I know you can get a decent idea of sounds through a youtube video, but obviously it will be better on a system...but regardless in the GT5 video, it only shows the first-person view....which will obviously sound different than a drive-by, like in the video you just posted. I know what you're trying to get at as far as how the NASCAR sounds raw and beefy..but it's hard to compare the game's on-board cam with a real-life drive-by.

EDIT: Sorry I missed the drive-by part in the GT5 vid and just listened to it. I still know what you're getting at, maybe needs slight improvement, but I still don't feel it's enough to say that the sounds are going to be horrific. When I first heard the NASCAR GT5 vid, I was actually expecting worse than what I heard.

That G4TV Multiplayer Madness video was awful. How has that female presenter not been fired? Totally unprofessional, clueless, unfunny and disrespectful toward her guests. Very surprised with what she said to Kaz regarding his choice to not speak English. Shame she didn't choke on that mint.

The 2005 BMW M5 in GT4 was spot on as well. Sounded great. I hope they didn't change it too much for GT5. Well, if they can make it better then great, but I'd be really disappointed if they ruined it.

Although I agree with the people who are angry at GT's failed sound engine (to the point PD even dub car sounds in trailers), I must admit I have a cheap 5.1 samsung home theater, which I paid the equivalent of 350$, and when I turn up the sound to the point it starts bothering my neighbors, so to speak, a lot of the grunt that appears to be missing from the engine becomes evident.

I have a decent camera lying around. I think I'll make a video with the corvette z06 and post it here to see what you guys think. At the very least it shows some potential in PD's sound engine.

I've been hearing this quite a lot but never found the video. Can anyone be kind enough to give me a link and satisfy my curiosity?

The link was in the post above mine hehe :)

As far as STOCK SOUNDS go...

they should get all the Exotic, Classic, F1, La-Mans, Touring, GT, Rally and well known sports Cars sound on-point...

but regular cars like AE86,Civic, Jetta... you get the point... those kind of car most ppl could careless about the STOCK sound...

as far as MODS go...

PD needs to address the Exhaust Modification... With or Without or Deleted Resonator, Straight Pipes, Dual Exhaust, Cat-Backs... they all sounds very different depending on what engine we talking about... i doubt PD will be bringing that to the table... but we will just have to wait and see.
