sweet, goodwood racetrack is now a possibility..... yay :)

i am going to try to make tracks from initial D =) and the Tokyo extreme racer series, both the wangan and touge games. such as mt. Hakone Nanamagari from TXR and mt. Akina from initial D (which is mt. Haruna in TXR because that is the actual name of the mountain that mt. Akina is based on)

Sadly you wont be able to do either in gt5's track editor
EDIT: track random generator

it makes the track for you? you just have to hope you like it??

It's not a track editor, it is a "course maker" (and that's why "course maker" is the name of that feature, in GT5).
Basically, you have a bunch of sliders to set different settings of the track you would like to build, and the course maker engine builds it. The sliders are about setting length, number of corners, tightness of the curves, banking, etc. You can also choose the weather and time setting.
However you cannot draw a track by hand, nor modify the track manually.

Damn!...aah well

It is a bit of a shame, but think of the courses as more of a surprise when they are generated :sly:

It doesn't bother me too much, i'll still have loads of fun of these generated tracks and if we can pick what weather we want then that's pretty much perfect for me :D

I think creating specific tracks with the Course Maker, will be about fruitful as Jeremy Clarkson driving a car from the back seat with string & sticks.
Though what I've seen done with the livery editor in Forza 3, makes me think some people will surprise us.

i think kaz is really excited about this whole track editor thing, and after watching the mod racer video, i think for GT6 we will see something with the functionality and detail of mod nation racer's track editor with the graphics and physics of gran turismo

I hope so :) mod nation's track creator is amazing.
or maybe a whole separate standalone title
GT Creator ?

The sliders are to choose the angle and whatever else for the corners in a section right? Then couldn't we just make the sections one corner long, and hand-design every corner for a track?

EDIT: track random generator

i remember in one of KY's interview he specifically mentioned that its a "track maker" not editor because of the fact that you can not edit the tracks that are already there.
i do understand where you get the randomly generated thing because he said that rally courses would be randomly generated and i believe the track maker might have the ability to generate random tracks such as in modnation racers. in modnation racers you can make your own track from scratch or generate a random one and edit that. its all about being user friendly thats why the parameters can be changed via sliders. so i will stick by his main statement being that its a "track maker" who knows what kind of elevation changes we would get but i am ok with waiting. in all honesty whether its a track editor or maker, randomly generated or not, i believe it should still be fun no matter what. lets just hope that we would be able to recreate some fun togue and Wangan roads. wangan midnight style racing anyone:sly:??

I see where you're going with that, but unfortunately it doesn't sound like we will have that much control. :grumpy:

I really hope that because of his recent involvement with MNR, Kaz will fast track advanced features to the track creator in the form of a patch in the near future.

The majority of this post regards track editing for rally courses, because that's what I have been mostly concentrated on for this post. I've been thinking more and more about the track editor and the prospect of making your own courses, especially in rally racing. The Toscana track is likely what is possible using the track editor. I do fear if some of the generated point-to-point rally courses may seem to get old after a while. It's like with the TrackMania series- you can make all kinds of courses, but the environments will tend to get real old real quick. That's why I sometimes have my doubts about any kind of track editor or maker.

This is what comes to mind for me about a track maker/editor... one reason why I'm not always as interested about track editors is that the environments themselves can get boring, and the real desire to make a totally unique course in character and environment just isn't as pleasing when you have a few set environments. It will be fun creating unique courses, but I sometimes wonder just how far and how detailed will the process of designing courses will be? And will it be to the point where you can make as many unique and distinctive courses as you can? Making such courses completely from scratch is obviously much more difficult and time-consuming (just ask the rFactor modding community). So that's the one thing I mostly fear about a track editor for GT5- distinctive and unique courses using certain environments.

I think I've been antagonistic of a track editor because I just don't see any need for one. Now that it's included, I wonder how far I can take my creative skill. I wonder if I could create any kind of track and how detailed I can make it. I've made levels for (if you can believe it) Duke Nukem 3D that are race tracks, and I want to see how much I could replicate or make courses similar to my own unique creations. One thing I usually note about fictional courses is the amount of tunnels used. I've basically learned that when you have tunnels, you go a bit faster since you don't have as much turbulence at speed. That's why you go down the track a bit faster through the tunnel at Test Course (since GT3). But when you start seeing almost every fictional course have some kind of tunnel, it gets a bit old to me. Almost like every street course has to be like Monaco's F1 course with its tunnel. Every single fictional course in just about every Ridge Racer has tunnels. Thing is... all of us have our own ideas as to how a great race track should be designed based on what we deem great.

So I'm a bit more interested on this track editor now. I still may keep studying the Toscana course to envision what could be possible with such an editor.

A few things of note from the new video.

1. The topography seems to be randomized as well. During the video you can see the topography changing each time the track is randomized.

2. We have a new theme confirmed. It is called "Eifel" which also has (circuit) in parentheses. Which most likely means we will be able to create a circuit. Meaning it will have grandstands, etc. Also, this theme is most likely related to the Eifel region in Germany. Here is a picture showing the region. And a link for its Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eifel

And here is a picture showing the location of the Nurburgring in Germany.
220px-Map_of_Nurburg.jpg

So I think we can assume that Eifel is the Nurburgring theme. However, is this the new name of German Springtime? Or are they two different themes?

3. I remember hearing Kaz state there will be 4 possible sections. This was also reinforced by the screenshots on the official site. However, we see that there is a possibility of 7. Which is definitely key if you want some variety in these courses.

4. Time was adjustable between 18:00 and 21:00. Which could mean the difference between normal daylight and night? :odd: 18:00 was chosen and it was light outside. The more I think about it, the more I think that the Toscana theme will be limited to these times. Which kind of makes sense. In other words, anything Toscana will be able to go from dark to light, but not from night to day.

5. Once again we see weather options, but it is crossed out. Weird. Is it possible that only some themes will have weather options? I would say that is likely.

6. We don't see the option to make a point to point. :odd:

7. We stay on the mountain-shaped tab the whole time. I would guess this is where you see the track's master settings, which is what we are looking at. However, it appears we can go to the different sections specifically. Probably allowing for more detailed control over those sections.

8. Interesting choice for the name. "sunset drive" ;)

Probably is just editing. I don't think there is anyway it will be that quick. But, I was excited about how quickly it generated the tracks.

I'm praying, PRAYING that we can have a long straight so that I can try to experience what Captain Slow did with Bugatti, and maybe the X1.

I mean, a straight line, c'mon. It's not that hard, PD.

My speculation about the quick time in loading the course is that, maybe, the "test drive" is just a preview version in which you just check the track layout, so the scenery has a very sparse detail level. When you are happy with your layout, the track can be generated and saved with full detail in it.

Just speculating a bit...

What advantage does that give you though? You would still need to load up and get on the track unless the load times for a fully generated track are drastically above what was shown here... Seems unlikely. Maybe certain tracks types are more sparse then others?

Seeing as the driving line is also dynamicly created for these tracks on the fly. AI support should be a given

I'm pretty sure the break out session confirmed a p2p option. Maybe Famine can spread some light on that.

I'm hoping to be able to narrow the track a bit.

With a paved road with markings not likely. Unmarked country roads may be in the other themes.

Probably all the track assets are kept in memory, hence the fast preview time. Also the video shows the game keeps previously generated tracks in memory when you generate a new one. Since they are basicly just a numbers and random seed, they probably take hardly any memory

Did someone say Eifel? :)

This pic looks a lot like the pic in the GT5 Eifel theme

See Below. Now I'm surprised as hell, there is no generic Japanese mountain road theme...

Does anyone remember the Moto Racer 2 Track Creator? That was awesome. I hope GT5's is as easy to use.

It was said that no two games would generate the same track right??

I can see the GT community surpassing the MNR community by year end. That's if tracks were able to be uploaded for anyone, it's just shareable with friends right?

Also I noticed a small narrow road connecting to the main road in bottom left theme of the last pic I posted.

I agree that, for instance, Toscana in the gravel seem more sparse, I would like to see tracks created from the Eifel (track) template, to see if they seem more "populated".

But seeing how fast the course maker seems to generate the layout, and the fact that you can go back to previously generated layouts before you finally decide to save it, it made sense to me, combined with the fast preview, that we are seeing just the "preview", not the fully rendered track.

But all of this could change if the video shown has been edited for brevity

I don't know but if they are randomly generated (as we know), it makes sense.

Yes. It was officially stated that you will be able to play your own tracks online with your friends
