GT7 & PSVR2

I had no intention of getting PSVR2, it wasn't even on my radar, then yesterday I stumbled upon this thread and this morning I bought one. Oops
I drive a lot of cars in real life, road and track. I’m a huge racing/driving/karting enthusiast and student of the whole thing. I’ve said to countless friends, I have this entire setup—PS5, VR2, Trak Racer rig, Fanatec DD and load-cell pedals—for about $3,500. I know that’s not cheap on the surface. But the enjoyment I get out of it makes it all seem like the bargain of a lifetime to me LOL
Christ, my local K1 Speed indoor kart track charges about $30 per race. A race lasts like 6 min.
Don’t get me wrong, I know as well as anyone the difference between real driving and sims. But it’s still bonkers to have something like this in my house. It’s like the Star Trek holo-deck 🤣

As an ex-racer in real life who spent countless thousands on racing each year, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments and couldn’t have put it any better …I love the holodeck analogy 👍
 
It got here a day early!

I will say, the display itself was probably a bit overhyped, but overall I'm having a great time. Thankfully I didn't need any time to adjust to avoid getting sick, but it'll be a while before my lap times recover. Worth it though.
There is a lot of sharpness to be gained by finding just the right sweetspot. Took me a while to get the hang of it. Glad you´re adapting so quickly.

Sharpness isn't so much the problem, I think people praised the colors and all that a bit too much in the videos I watched and internet posts I read. Ultimately it doesn't look like it's much better than my monitor, everything in the game looks kind of dull in a weird way. I feel like that's down to the game itself though? Maybe there's some settings I haven't found.

Many reviewers praised the PSVR2 because they were comparing it to other VR headsets, but the hype raised expectations a little too far, which is evident by the fact that you were expecting better colours and brightness than what you see on your monitor (that's never going to happen for a few years at least). It does look incredible at night though. I just did a 20 minute race at Bathurst in karts, starting at the "night" setting so it would slowly get darker over those 20 minutes and leave me with a dark starry sky. HUD off, no worries about finishing position, it was amazing. I got 3rd because I went off at the start of the last lap, I was too busy looking around to notice turn 1 was coming.
 
I must be mad, I started out at Laguna Seca in an LC500, then went from there straight to Alsace Test Course, lol

But yeah, I also didn't think I was prone to VR sickness as I've never experienced any kind of motion sickness. Having played since PSVR2 launch, the only time I've really felt anything was actually dizziness when I intentionally crashed my car going over 200mph directly into the barrier on the Nordschleife tourist layout. I spun like 7 full circles, full throttle burning out the whole time. Fun stuff.

Oh and the banked turns at Daytona are weird to get used to.

It just affects everyone differently, so yeah easier to start cautiously if you're unsure. Starting with a convertible on a track you know is definitely a good idea.
 
My plan is to pick a classic convertible and do Brands Hatch since I used to go there very often as a kid. I'll be taking it slowly!
I wouldn’t do that. The old car will have soft suspension that will take corners like a boat in rough waters. Turn 1 at Brands is also not the best introduction to VR …well it is, but not if you don’t yet know how you’re going to react to VR. I would recommend driving a Radical around a flat circuit like Goodwood, or the Nurburgring F1 circuit, for example, which has more gentle elevation changes. Do that for the first few short goes, then build yourself up over the first week or so. Expect to get dizzy and nauseous and consider it a bonus if you don’t.

I appreciate the advice, thanks. I really do intend to take it very slowly though - 5 or 10 mins at first, not full throttle, just a gentle exploratory drive. I'm not planning to rush the whole VR experience.

Thats what I wish I did :lol: I still drive kinda slow for about 5 min maybe more depending on how frequent I'm VRing. But its kind of like riding a bike, once you get it stays with you.

Hey guys still having tons of fun with GT7 and PSVR2.

Just wanted to mention a few days ago I tried my second game in PSVR2. Hope its ok to say that in this thread :-)

No mans sky. It has gotten kind of slammed in reviews because the graphics are supposedly not that much better compared to the first PSVR1 version, but man I think its fun and very much worth the money when I got it at half price. So for anyone looking to add more games to play with their headset I can very much recommend it :-)

Haven't played the game since May so I took a VR "break" for that long. About 2.5 months. Jumped back in yesterday and didn't need to get my VR legs back under me.

The UI still needs work though. At Bathurst I don't know what direction the wind is blowing for example. Still can't see distances between other drivers either.

It can be downright annoying (in a good way) having someone behind you on the long le mans straight. Add rain to it and it gets crazy.

I do wish the audio department at PD put in some work though. The wipers still don´t make any sound and the rain overall does not sound right. Bit immersion breaking.

I find the sound of the rain on the tin-top race cars to be brilliantly immersive. I did the 1-hr Spa race yesterday, during which the heavens opened. Stones appeared on the track as they do in real life when rain washes them on from the verges, and the sound was gloriously deafening.

The immersion-breaking factor for me is not the sound of the rain, but the fact that in real life one finds maximum grip off-line, where the rain does not sit on top of the rubber left by cars on the racing line. This is a major mistake and apparently one that all the sim-racing titles make. Another similar gripe I have is that whilst the game shows the marbles of tyre wear building up off line, they always appear in the same place (regardless of where the racing line is for the particular vehicles racing at the time), and more importantly, they don't affect one's grip at all. I still love the game with a passion, but to me as an ex-racer, the fact that the best grip in the wet is to be found on the normal racing line is the single biggest unrealistic immersion-breaker going.
 
Someone added bass shakers to his rig with PSVR ? Is it good ?

I find PSVR so immersive that now I lack carbody feedback. I plan to add 2 bass shakers to my rig, one under pedals and one under seat. Will see :)

Anyway, PSVR with GT7 is glorious. I cannot even imagine have this at home years ago.

That someone will probably be me then. Yes, the haptic feedback is very well worthwhile doing, as is the added immersion of wearing a partial race harness. If I race without either, it immediately breaks the immersion for me.

People say having a fan blow in your face adds some immersion

I have yet to fit a fan, but it is on my To-Do list as VR racing in the summer can get quite hot!
