1999 e36 …wish I didn’t trade it in. Been driving audi’s since and i enjoy the quattro system. I dont think i want to go back to having a manual clutch…i got caught out in San Francisco hills a few times and car rolled backwards and or clutch burned out
My dad's driven audi quattro since the 90s and always tries to wind me up about bmw rwd crap when the roads are damp in the UK throughout the winter.

M cars now have awd and likely 'better' for every day driving in wet climates, but I'm bmw through and through;)

Awd tech and lsd had moved on over the past decade, so new m awd still rwd focused balanced, and yiu get the benefits of awd without stereotype under steer, numb/'boringness' prevalent in previous era awd cars. Front wheels kick in when pushing it around corners, flooring it, so just play supporting role rstger than dominant all the time as in vag cars...

Particularly as these cars movecinto 500bhp + bracket...

Even with modern traction, stability systems, can still cause lose of traction and back to go out in bone dry conditions, straight line if yiu nearly floor it in 3rd around 3k rpm with good tyres (pilot sport 4 s's inn my case...).

If I'm honest . . . it's my favorite car in the game. Even more so in V.R.

95% of the time I'm driving it stock, and occasionally I'll use CS tires on it and simulate a Car & Driver test with the GTO, 959 and a couple other cars thrown in (depending on my mood.)
Thing of beauty isn't it. Going to wheel it out again later after this chat!

Sound of ferrari engine, interior and as discussed the sheer driving pleasure/enjoyment of this car is sublime isn't it.

Never gets old. Recall when i first tried it 6 months ago amongst load of other cars with praino tune finding myself hours later still hot lapping om various circuits in it.

Then tried it stock, working through races, adding mild tune to beat competition I'm higher pp races where needed. Was superb throughout.

Feels Visceral, very much alive, but not punishing.

Must buy imo. Get it if you don't already have it on your garage!!

I drove a stick shift m3 for almost 20 yrs so…been driving stick most my life but my recent audi has sequential shifting and the no clutch is odd at times for me. I bought the fanatec pedals before i had the shifter and was irritated that it was there and not being used. Its quite fun and brings me back to driving my old M3
I like having the clutch pedal even though I don't have a stick shift on my rig. I use it as a footrest.

Nice! Which m3... I have the f80 comp.

My first semi auto tbh. Wanted manual tbh, but most high performance cars are auto/semi auto now... civic type r outlier? I always use tge paddles, probably used full auto for 10 mins over 3 years over ownership. Love the damn car :D

Wouldn't go back to manual now, despite 'engagement' fears.

Dct is perfect for it. Punches through the gears at relentless ferocity, with littke/no discernable delay, loss of momentum. Probably need it now once cars move into silly torque/bhp ranges. Overall experience more than makes up for any lack of engagement fears. Dct perfectly suited to the 3ltr straight 6 twin turbo.

Like I say, it's simply ferocious/relentless:D

The new m m3/4 gxx has the zf box, which by most accounts isn't quite on the sane level as the dct. Many suggesting bmw m elected for it go keep costs down...
I still like manuals on the street just for the fun of it and the heel-toe action. But on a track? I'm never choosing a stick over paddle shift. Even on a good road, the latter is honestly better most of the time if you're really going to have a good go at it. To me, the engagement lost by not having a stick is regained by the ability to left-foot brake, and to brake more efficiently deeper into corners.

Onviousky in by gone eras people raced in manuals, but as yiu say, even on the road when pushing it, it's just too lively, too much going on to imagine using a manual in the high torque, modern turbos.

Imagine it would end up feeling a bit chaotic, out of control tbh, rather than 'engaging'.

Responsive dct is just so punchy, instantly responsiveness,... simply savage.

Couldn't imagine piloting it using stick tbh.

i remember JClarkson always talking about how rubbish a lot of supercar gear boxes are...even ferrari's, so yea I don't know if a stick is really a good idea when you have that much performance power, I still think its the best thing for rally

It's not that you can't drive modern sports cars or supercars (if they even offer a true manual) well with a stick. You just can't drive them the same way as you can with paddle shift. I drive a LOT of different cars on the street and on the track each year. I recently, as one example, just drove both the "auto" and manual versions of the new M2. It's fun to drive the manual, but it's quicker to drive the paddle version. Not only are the shifts quicker, but like I said, you can also brake more effectively. And when you learn to left-foot brake well, you can use the brake more easily to balance the car and not just slow it down.

I totally get the old-school mantra of manuals being more engaging/fun. But honestly, I have to disagree anymore when we're talking about truly driving cars to their limits. When you're doing that, you have more than enough to concentrate on--braking points, car rotation, etc--that you don't really miss the added task of shifting. Hell, in cars that have good/smart enough gearboxes, sometimes I just leave them in auto mode and don't even mess with the paddles.

Oh i agree, I know that is the reason F1 uses no clutch and wheel seq. shifting, better - all around flat out driving without having to worry if you're gonna throw the stick in the wrong gears... or grind them because you didn't fully get into gear.

Fun fact I live across the street from ZGarage and see hooked up datsun fairlady Z's all the time, the shop deals with a lot of stick shift racing cars and always see them testing cars on streets and the highway

No illusions about driving stick in the modern world. However, in the virtual world it would have been great to scratch that itch from time to time. If they ever were to sort it out that would definitely been a reason to start a second account. Stick only and let the chips fall where they may. The nord this week is the kind of back road goodness which would be incredible. Every time i get ready to race in A though i end up booting up an 911 from the 80’s or 90’s and rip around at twilight. I keep yoking the thing(s) but it doesn’t matter..still in the honeymoon phase with the shifter and grinning like an idiot.

We just need to meet for lobby races and drive the older Gr3 cars or Gr1 cars or just road cars and all use the shifter? Random weather on top. If we would manage to get a full lobby here with decent players GT7 would be the best game ever

It is a pity for race A. I am not even using any other car than the LFA or AMG since I hate it so much to see with the VR the shifter in use but the game doesnt let me….

If someone wants to take the lead on putting something together I'm happy to join. A little slower than most of you but I'm a very clean racer.

I will definitely get involved with this! We had our opener yesterday (Porsche Cup Snail league modified 992) and honestly this is when GT7 is just incredible…. When racing with good people GT7 is so fun!

Edit: This was how the finish went.. I am in the Mystery Machine Porsche.. Finished 10th

1. I love both those liveries. How can I find them

2. I'm no detective but I can tell you would be great to have in racing group. You talked about a great race and you finished 10th. I feel the same way when I race. I don't care where I finish, although I hope to move up a few places, as long as it's a great clean race

The Snail League owner of the Porsche Cup series makes these himself lol. He makes a bunch of them and we pick them. I will see if I can get him to share them for you.. he is a great guy so I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t mind!

Yea bud racing with good people is a blessing honestly.. I mean in that league we have people from all over the world so it’s always cool to meet up.. race hard and chop it up after! In our league race the format is 2 30 min races with the second being reverse grid and it’s a blast! First race finished 4th second race started 12 finished 10.. the battles you have mid pack are just as fun fighting for a podium! As I said if we get something going I’m definitely down!

I feel exactly the same way. Have been since I got a shifter from my G29 back in my GT Sport days. Haven't stopped grinning since.

Different subject: Anyone here know how PSVR2 players could/would be governed for World Series events? Would a player be allowed to use a PSVR2 or would they have to go flat?

I’d be in for the stick//vr race. I’m still in the canon fodder department. Might be for a little bit. No worries with that though. Its great fun just trying to keep it together. One interesting thing which has been noticeable lately is that a lot of the car movements which didn’t fit in my brain when using the flappys, seem to make all the sense in the world when using a shifter.

The PlayStation pulse earbuds are a nice upgrade over the traditional headset to use with the psvr2. Nice to shed some of the weight off my head. The game sounds really good. Louder and meaner.
Darn you for making me want to buy them now.

Have you ever used the Sony Pulse "can" headset? How do you compare it for sound?

Are you able to hear your surroundings as well?

So what’s the verdict on VR? I was so close to buying but the interior view really killed it for me, very sobering moment whilst it was in the cart. I had a oculus and really enjoyed racing the Ferrari open wheelers but on the pc the graphics weren’t great. Would consider pvsr2 if maybe f1 was vr

It's really nothing like the flat screen cockpit view. Everything appears much larger, and you can easily look around the A-pillars in hard top cars. It's amazing in open wheel cars. Cockpit view seems claustrophobic on flat screen, but not at all in VR. You really have to try it, can't just watch flat screen replays of VR to tell the difference.

It's the best thing for my video game experience in my life. Sounds like hyperbole, but it isn't for me.

I'll just give one example:

Driving the Z8 on Deep Forest, when I reach the last hairpin I can turn my head and spot the exit to make the turn much easier than before. And when my car begins to slide, I can lock my eyes on the exit and keep it there while everything moves around me.

Like driving a real car.

If you're asking, you haven't read this thread. Lol

There is nothing like it. Visibility is fantastic. Open wheelers even better!

EDIT: Radical at Road Atlanta made me giddy. Yes, I used that word when I told my wife about that race.

The most joyful experience I've had racing in a long while
