1994 McLaren F1

  • Total voters
    199
  • Poll closed .

Great article! Says something (indeed a very sad thing) about the world we live in.

Don't worry, a meh vote has no swing.

As the GTP Alternative Cool Wall curator, I can completely refute this. A lot of people thought that the SR-71 would have only needed a couple more sub zero votes to get into Miura's House, but in reality it would have required at least eighty six more. For example:

Assuming that the nomination being polled receives one hundred sub zero votes, and no other votes, it will score 2.000 on the cool wall.

If it receives one hundred sub zero votes and one meh, it will score 1.980.

One hundred sub zeroes and two mehs, 1.961

By the time it has received six mehs on top of the one hundred sub zeroes, its score will have dropped to 1.887 and it will not be joining the Miura.

Well, I originally voted SZ, but after seeing all of... that, I'm not sure I'd do it a second time. That was insane. Not liking the way a car looks is plenty enough reason to validate a meh, at least in his mind.

After going through my discussion with @Blood Eagle today, and with some discussion with @Liquid about the happenings today, I've decided to present my thoughts of it all, as I've used it as something to learn from so it doesn't go as awry next time (if there is a next time of course), and to also explain that it had been blown out of proportion.

It began with him saying: "Interwebs opinions mean nothing in a public poll. You like it, some don't." I called him up with his choice of words with 'You like it, some don't.' I believe he misspoke or used the incorrect words, and was actually meaning that some people find it cool, and that others don't. I believe this because he eventually did say: "Kid, vote cool for stuff you think is cool. Vote uncool for stuff you think is uncool. It's that simple."

Afterwards, it all went rather downhill, with him screwing himself up by putting words into my mouth by saying I was voting basing on the majority, but basing it off that and voting the opposite to be 'cool'. Which is incorrect for this car, but usually I do indeed do it because I can find out a bit more of the car and it's background, meaning I have a bit more of a definitive opinion on it.

It then didn't help that Blood Eagle then rammed his head so far up his ass, not willing to listen to other people and then even stretching to making personal remarks about the younger (and even directly at me) people. I think he just got caught up in the fact that I wasn't trying to change his opinion of the McLaren, but rather his opinion on how a cool wall works.

To be honest, I think a lot of people misunderstood my posts as being an attack at his opinion of the McLaren, but rather were meant to be trying to tell him the difference between a cool wall and a like wall. After looking through my discussion, I actually couldn't find any posts where I said 'you should of voted Sub Zero'. Well, there was one that was close to, but it wasn't blunt. I wouldn't stretch to call it 'you should of voted it this', but rather 'a meh isn't a suitable thing for such a car really'.

I still stick behind my first statement, if it was him making a mistake or he actually meant it (in that case he'd be changing his view point which I also happened to mention to him), but the rest was completely blown out of proportion, especially about me attacking his opinion (that in fact may of not been directed to me, but as a precaution), especially since I stated that I very nearly voted uncool, with somewhat similar reasons to @Blood Eagle (looks).

I know this doesn't mean much to anyone, but I just wanted to clarify it since it got so blown out of proportion.

And this is why I mostly don't bother to actually post in here.
Blood Eagle voted lower, and he was called out on it along with other members who didn't vote "SZ". He actually decided to post to explain his vote, that he didn't like the way this car looked, and that he didn't understand why this was a big deal. What many of us saw from this point on was some members nitpicking his response, or demanding that one should explain their position(he said that he found the car to be ugly :dunce:).

Was it Toronado who called it a witch hunt? That's what it looked like to me, too. I like to vote in these polls, but I mostly skip posting also for the same reason as sparky here(too much arguing over nothing). I can't remember the last time I witnessed so much negativity over so little, considering the standards we generally enjoy on gtplanet. Only good I saw in this thread was members like Toronado, ken, etc., sticking up for a misunderstood member. Props to you guys. 👍

Sub Zero story, bro!

Perhaps he means the wing on the LM or GTR.

The original McLaren F1 has one too. It activates when you are in a certain speed or while you brake.

You can also see this kind of spoiler in a Mercedes SLR McLaren, McLaren MP4-12C and even the bloody Veyron...

This is one of the most insane things I have ever heard anyone say. If you have an opinion, and you wish to express it, be prepared to provide a valid explanation or have it passed off as a load of bovine excrement. (And I'm using the philosophical definition there of "a statement made by someone who does not know and/or care about truth or accuracy with regards to the matter in hand"; as opposed to a lie which is "a statement made by someone with the intention of hiding the truth from others", or nonsense which is "lhrwlrvbeiuvb ehvbevh;iuubihewhygogeycuvbwr".)

Do you always have to express your opinions and justify it to other random internet folk you have never met? My answer is no. That's called seeking approval. I don't seek anyones approval. That's high school mentality. You do not need to justify your opinions to me. They are your own. Your perception is that everyone owes you an explanation which they don't. It's quite different if your mom tells you that you have some explaining to do. You must explain. On the internet, there is no requirement. Many others voted this car down. I'm the only one who stepped up after being called out publicly. It simply wasn't good enough for you and many more people. Cue Lynch mob. Even the Mods participated in that lol. You guys have people scared to even post in here. There is something inherently wrong with that. I'm not scared of you guys. Neither should anyone else be.

I honestly agree with most, if not all, of what you said. Bravo.

I don't get this thread. Apart from some good posts, after the pic of Blackadder this discussion has been about one vote. No, I don't care what someone other votes, the problem is their reaction to being called out. Zenith wanted better reason to my vote and I hope I gave one. Blood Eagle's vote is okay to me, the vote isn't the problem. I know some of you wanted this car to beat Miura, but it didn't, actually the Miura wouldn't be so high up there if it was polled now, so even Miura wouldn't beat the Miura.

I think simply, when you state an opinion publicly, you should be able to back it up.. if you choose not to, you'll just have to accept that others will come to their own conclusions on why you had the opinion you did... and if that happens, you can't blame them for doing so.

.. anyway..

Sub Zero! I remembered I bought Need For Speed II PC game in early '98, and played on my old 266mhz PC with 64mb RAM. I selected random supercar, then I noticed a car named "McLaren F1" and selected that car. I was racing with my car at Proved Ground or somewhere. I won first time with McLaren F1 and broke EA lap times same time in arcade mode... That's my #1 favorite supercar in world for long time!

Uncool.

I love the car to bits but it's not cool.

Also, if you take away that S70/2 there's not much 'specialness' left other than some amazing packaging and a central driving position.
