Cool. It's not a Miata and it's got an awesome engine in it. Also non-car people will love it because it looks significantly higher-end than it really is.

Also I'm not entirely sure how it gets associated with The Fast and the Furious.

Maybe 5 years ago, but I don't think that's really even a thing anymore. I can't even remember the last time I saw a "riced out" Honda.
They have moved on to "stanced" out cars and drifter style. I see them all the time.
I run a southwest auto event website/forum.

Solid 'Cool'. Even though it gets out torqued by a lawnmower and gets horrible gas mileage (comparable to my car even though I have over 3x the engine displacement), it's a nice, fun, peppy car to drive around. But too many people confuse 'fun' with 'fast', which is why so many of them are riced out.

I think the rest of this thread should put into words why I voted seriously uncool on this car, but if it doesn't, then here are my reasons:

  1. It attracts an altogether anal level of attention. "Oh, it's the 2004 model with the 2.2 litre VTEC which can only do 8300 RPM as opposed to the 2000 model with the 2.0 VTEC which can do 9000 RPM."
  2. Try explaining to anybody who doesn't know a lot about cars why you bought a Honda sports car rather than a MX-5 or a Lotus. You'll have to resort to the above, and then you'll just look like an anorak.
  3. It fails to pass any of the basic things which almost always automatically make a car cool. (Featuring prominently in a very cool film or TV show, being built in Sweden, being a French car which is actually good etc. etc.)
  4. It manages to pass the basic test of whether something is Seriously Uncool or not, namely, I associate this car with playing GT2 as a kid.
Also, those VTEC jokes were never funny.

Not fast? Riced out?

I mean sure there's a few select "rice" modifications done to S2000s, as is just about any car, but not really as many as one would think. Is this car being mislabeled because it's made by Honda?

AP1 - Sub Zero

AP2 - A very solid cool

I can complain about the engine, because this is the internet. I drove an AP1, hit 9k, nothing else will do. Sure, I understand why Honda went with the bigger build for more torque, you know, to make it more "useful," but that doesn't make it as cool. Overall, though, the car is very pleasant. Good looking in all it's forms, fits me reasonably well (although, my head stuck out a bit), fun to drive around even at 4/10ths.

5. The drivers are asshats.

It was sub-zero to me until the stupid "Vtec kicked in, yo" joke basically kicked in and now it's just cool.

Also, another factor that keeps it out of sub-zero is that some Honda drivers are known to be sort of jerks on the road. Seriously, even where I live now; I still see Hondas tailgating people (even when they're in a slow lane and could just simply overtake), swerving through lanes without even using lane/turn signals, and I sometimes get cut off by a Civic or Accord. Once again, I'm not saying all Honda drivers are like that, but quite a few that I see on the road tend to be.

Yeah, actually. Come to think of it, that's the other thing I associate it with, namely, almost being hit by one which was speeding outside my school when I was a kid...

Hmm...

You know, at the time this was an extremely capable Boxster/Z4 competitor, even before it fell behind everything because Honda simply stopped caring. I'd rather have the Boxster these days, though.

If this had the 9000rpm redline of the previous model it would be slightly cooler. Obviously bragging about your car's redline is leopard print levels of uncool, but few people unaccustomed to sport bikes and race cars and prepared for the sound of a 4 cylinder revving so high.

I find you would impress more people with a 9,000rpm, high displacement V8 before an I4 revving the same.

Great sports car, but VTEC just kicked in, yo!

Unmodified ones are cool. As soon as it's modified, it drops to uncool very very quickly.

It's a shame there are next to no stock high displacement V8's that do that and very few modified ones.

Remember, modified cars are uncool.

You make a good point.

But as far as modified cars being uncool, I totally disagree with you

Nearly every S2k around here has a full roll cage and aero parts.

Feels gutless below VTEC YO while being a hassle to mod, small cockpit (smaller than the MR2 Spyder) with a decent amount of weight at 2700 pounds. It isn't faster than a 90's era M3, doesn't get great fuel economy despite the small engine, doesn't respond well to mods, constantly have to row gears to get into the power band around town. It is a Miata for men too insecure to buy a Miata. The owner base and endless power per displacement arguments revolving around it make it uncool, but I have a soft sport for roadsters and it handles quite well, so meh.
