GTP Cool Wall: Ford Escort ZX2

Where to start...hmm.

My mother in law has one of these, never like the shape really, almost like its trying to hard to be something its not. The side profile seems a bit off as well, like they took a 4 door design, chopped the back end off and then tried to make it sporty. The build quality is horrible (they suffer from high vibration pulse in the steering wheel at idle among other things) and the performance the outside hints towards is lacking in all levels. I could go on, but I'll just say:

Seriously Uncool.

And they say my Civic does 7.2s 0-60...Its been able to do some 5.9s and is rated at like 6.3 from Honda.

Very few that I see here are in even decent shape. Friend had a five speed that he delivered pizzas in, and its probably the only really clean one I know of.

You might not like the Focus, but it isn't junk. Ugly and slow maybe, depends on who you are and what you look for out of a car.

It's maybe just an impression because a lot of Focus owners in my town treat their cars like 🤬 and they all look crappy because they don't take care of their cars. (Falling bumpers scratched paint and windows...)

But I admit that the upcoming Focus looks great, even with my dislike of compacts I'd gladly drive one.

Its not slow. 0-60mph in 7.4s is not slow. 0-60 in say 8.4s is. Infact 7.4s to 60 is faster than some Focus with the same engine!

And as a 3 time Focus owner I take offense to your overall statement. My Focus is neither slow nor junk.

Maybe its your area, most of the Focus owners I see have tasteful mods. Obviously a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

Besides... "slowness" does not have anything to do with "coolness".

Don't tar the Focus with the Escort brush - it's far better handling, far more interesting car than the US Escort ever was.

Yeah, but it's not exactly fast either (Could call it quick?). Fast is that same GS400 doing a roll from 120Mph against a built motor Z06.

I don't know. Maybe after experiencing a 20-80Mph in what seems like the blink of an eye a few times, anything below does feel a bit slow.

Horses for courses. You can't lambast a 130-hp Escort for being "slow" when it takes other cars of the same period 160-200 hp to actually go faster than that.

Again, not that "slow" and "cool" are mutually exclusive.

It might be fast for something of it's own class, but overall, I don't consider it to be even relatively quick.

Like I said, after being in a few of the cars around Dallas, my perception of fast is much different than it used to be. A built, turbocharged M3 that can run next to a modified Ford GT, that to me is fast. That's a car that is impossible to bring your head off the seat when it's accelerating. A car like my own that takes 6 seconds to 60, isn't. Quick, but not fast.

This all of course, is just my opinion.
