Came to think of something while I was getting ready for the golf course earlier..
The handicap system, it can be really flawed.
It's like when I first got my green card. The first round you play, you sit at hcp 54, and to get the white card, where you're at hcp 36 would only require a decent player 1 round.
And like in my case, my hcp says 36 since I have'nt played a single round since (that allows me to drop my hcp) then, but do in general reach results that would translate to something like hcp 20, it would be extremely hard to beat me since my hcp is'nt representative to my level of play.
Like in the divisions here in our registry.
Some members only do it fast to get a GTP_Tag account, while others might plow hours and hours in to it, and probably got a lower hcp-number than what he's able to pull off in a race.
I don't want to sound negative, but was just raising the question.
Hope that's ok.
Ofcourse, this is'nt something that I care so much about that it would keep me from racing, just putting it out there to (perhaps) concider. 👍
Every handicap system is imperfect and has flaws. As we said before, nothing is set in stone so I appreciate you all expressing your opinion now while there is time to discuss and even make changes. That being said...
I'll repeat what I said before... No handicap means we also shouldn't allow multi country teams. How would that be fair? Compare PURE NA to Team USA and Team Canada. We could create an NA team and grab gooners (and T-L if he were to show) and combine with our two fastest US drivers to create a faster team. That would defeat the main goal of this event.
I would rather allow PURE to create their super multi national teams because I know they would enjoy more racing on a team that way. In fact when I sent Eddie and Tim a PM inviting them I suggested they do. But to allow this I think a conservative handicap is the counter-weight.
(And by the way we scrapped all plans for on track handicaps)
The UK team (or teams) will be a good head to head match for a PURE super team. All our other teams have been leveled out on purpose.. See the dutchies and USA teams.
So we could go a few ways.
1. Stay like it is and make sure the handicap multiplier is appropriate. Identify any clear handicap outliers. Frankly, I don't see a singe person on the list that is severely under qualified... DrWatson is maybe the most. There are maybe a few that are over qualified. I'm willing to flatten the curve a bit... That's easy enough.
2. Scrap the handicap and look at the team rules. Either allow all teams to reorganize into regional teams with true A/B/C teams or require all single nation teams.
Personally I vote for option 1. Why? This is a one day "tourney" and there are only two rounds. We won't find the fastest country in the world perfectly with that setup. The primary goal is to have fun and focus on team based strategy and tactics (even in quali) and celebrate 100 weeks of race organization and promotion by 3d3 racing. (And have some awesome racing along the way of course).
Next year we are going to extend this and build a bigger series with a bigger structure spanning multiple weeks (months) and its likely the focus will be different and not in include handicaps.
Anyway, I welcome more opinions... I see the benefits to both sides of the argument. We have time to discuss, but the discussion isn't going to drag on long. By July 7 or so we need to have the rules set in stone so teams can plan accordingly.
EDIT:
While we are talking tournament structure, we're considering removing the randomizer to determine the lounge for round 1 and instead:
Seed each team based on their average quali lap across team drivers (average of top 3 qualifiers per team). Then set up the lounges for round 1 according to those team seeds. For example, if there are 12 teams, split into 3 lounges of 4 teams each based on their qualification seed:
Lounge A: 1, 6, 7, 12
Lounge B: 2, 5, 8, 11
Lounge C: 3, 4, 9, 10
Round 2 would lounge assignment determined by round 1 performance (points total) as originally planned:
Lounge A: Top 4
Lounge B: Middle 4
Lounge C: Bottom 4
