I should be around for practice today at (3:00 PM Eastern | 12:00 PM Pacific | 19:00 GMT) I might even be early! I will post again when I am headed to the GTP_3D3 main lounge...
Scott, there is a one hour practice/instruction session prior to the race tomorrow! Hope to see you there!
Al
Hope to be there myself... depends on work though. I want one more shot at driving this car/track anyway... so much fun. You guys are in for a treat on Saturday:
For those of you who didn't have to much time to prepare... this car is very easy to drive and easy to keep on track. You won't get in the way... be careful in turn 1 (especially lap 1) and going into the final chicane to avoid contact and all should be well.
A couple race craft notes I want to mention after watching replays of the Wednesday races (use the track map and video below for reference):
Turn 1: If you go into turn 1 two wide (which can easily happen with the draft) and both drivers have sufficient overlap then both drivers must provide side room to the other through the turn including the apex. The inside driver has to slow more and take the apex very sharply. The outside driver goes a little deeper and makes a wider arc. You are both racing for the best exit to position for the next corner, but you can't cut the other guy off. I saw a couple instances of the outside cut diving right for the apex as if he were by himself in a time trial... you can't do that according to our rules. If insufficient overlap is *not* established by the turn in point then the driver in front has his choice of line and the behind driver must back off. It's slower to give room so if it's early in the race it might be good strategy to just back off earlier under braking and follow single file... If you are trying to catch a pack, battling like this is a sure way to let them get away. Early in the race think about the big picture (true for any race). If it's the last lap or two of course you are going to battle for every position, but you still have to follow the OLR and leave room when overlap is established.
See 3:40-3:50 in the video where the outside driver took the apex too narrow and the inside driver made contact... there is no way the inside driver could avoid contact... this was the outside drivers fault. See 12:50-13:02 to see how to properly take turn 1 two wide. See 7:40-7:55 to see a nifty undercut move here but you must be very aware that the inside driver has too much speed to pull this one off.
Turn 3: If you are inside attempting a pass, make sure you've established overlap *before* the turn in point. Do not dive bomb into this corner. The fastest line is a late apex wide approach which opens the door to a dive bomber who will use you as four extra wheels when they can't hold the inside due to excessive speed. That's wrong and the dive bomber will have to wait and you'll both lose time. Don't be that guy!!
Final Chicane: Same as turn 1 only it's much harder to go two wide. Best strategy is for one guy to back off except the final lap or two... the best passing opportunity on the track is only a few seconds away (front straight) so don't risk your entire race on a last second high risk braking attempt that can put you both in the soft legos or end up with you waiting for a driver you punted to recover.
See 3:00 - 3:17 in the video above for what can happen when two guys play chicken going into the chicane... they both lost several spots. See 12:15-12:30 where Tidgney backed off a little, gave up the spot for a better run through the chicane and ended up getting the pass done on the front straight.
The front straight (start/finish) and back straight right after the kink (13 to 4) are very good passing spots. The back straight requires a better jump on the guy your passing and you have to make a decision before braking for the chicane... so be a little careful there. Everywhere else on the track it's often faster just to follow/draft and wait for an opportunity to pass where you won't lose a ton of time.
This race can be about "coopetition" in the early/middle parts of the race. A couple drivers working together can lose the pack or catch back up if the other guys are battling. When you get to the final laps then take of the gloves... That's exactly how I kept up with Twissy in the EU race... by myself I had NO chance... working with Tidgney (or really me leaching Tidgney's speed) I managed to be in the mix for the win right until the end. Have fun!
