GTP_WRS-Online : Academy/D-League Racing - Suspended Until GT7

I see. I really thought, most of the guys were there, but I guess that's wrong :P.

I'll probably be racing in between 13 (1 PM) and 21 (9 PM), both GMT, plus/minus some minutes. Not in one row, but I'll post more info, if anyone's joining me đź‘Ť.

I am looking forward to this. I have never raced with Tire wear and fuel consumption. Can I get some info on what to expect? Will I need to pit or is the race short enough that I will just be faster and looser as the laps tick by?

Thanks in advance!

This car is "green"... only uses about 2.25 L per lap even on "FAST" so you definitely will not have to pit for fuel.

Now, you could pit during a 15 lap race and you'd run faster lap times... but the pit delta is 28 seconds at this track. There is NO WAY you are going to make up 28 seconds in 7 or 8 laps with your fresh tires after your pit.

So really there is no pit strategy in this length of a race. In the hour long event Wednesday there was a choice between 1 and 2 pits.

Tire wear will impact your times by up to 3-4 seconds by lap 15 so there is still a huge benefit to saving tires.

The nice thing about this car is that passing is possible on this track... can't say that with many faster cars as the straight just isn't long enough. But this car has a big enough draft profile and a slow enough top speed that you can make a draft pass on the front straight if you get a good run off the final corner. And you can make a draft pass leading to the final chicane... but you need a better run versus your competition to do that.

Would have loved to get in on this one but work has got in the way of any practice time for me and I'm behind the wheel of the minivan (arrrrggghhhhh!) for 15 hours tomorrow to get to the Inlaws in Denver.

I am however taking the PS3, wheel and my projector.....hmmmm. I might try to run some laps on Sat morning and join the rookie race. I will be sorely unprepared. I'll have to see.

If not, enjoy the fun fellow rookies and I'll catch up to you later (or at least I hope I'll catch up. ;-0)

I should be around for practice today at (3:00 PM Eastern | 12:00 PM Pacific | 19:00 GMT) I might even be early! I will post again when I am headed to the GTP_3D3 main lounge...

Scott, there is a one hour practice/instruction session prior to the race tomorrow! Hope to see you there!

Hope to be there myself... depends on work though. I want one more shot at driving this car/track anyway... so much fun. You guys are in for a treat on Saturday:

For those of you who didn't have to much time to prepare... this car is very easy to drive and easy to keep on track. You won't get in the way... be careful in turn 1 (especially lap 1) and going into the final chicane to avoid contact and all should be well.

A couple race craft notes I want to mention after watching replays of the Wednesday races (use the track map and video below for reference):

Turn 1: If you go into turn 1 two wide (which can easily happen with the draft) and both drivers have sufficient overlap then both drivers must provide side room to the other through the turn including the apex. The inside driver has to slow more and take the apex very sharply. The outside driver goes a little deeper and makes a wider arc. You are both racing for the best exit to position for the next corner, but you can't cut the other guy off. I saw a couple instances of the outside cut diving right for the apex as if he were by himself in a time trial... you can't do that according to our rules. If insufficient overlap is *not* established by the turn in point then the driver in front has his choice of line and the behind driver must back off. It's slower to give room so if it's early in the race it might be good strategy to just back off earlier under braking and follow single file... If you are trying to catch a pack, battling like this is a sure way to let them get away. Early in the race think about the big picture (true for any race). If it's the last lap or two of course you are going to battle for every position, but you still have to follow the OLR and leave room when overlap is established. See 3:40-3:50 in the video where the outside driver took the apex too narrow and the inside driver made contact... there is no way the inside driver could avoid contact... this was the outside drivers fault. See 12:50-13:02 to see how to properly take turn 1 two wide. See 7:40-7:55 to see a nifty undercut move here but you must be very aware that the inside driver has too much speed to pull this one off.

Turn 3: If you are inside attempting a pass, make sure you've established overlap *before* the turn in point. Do not dive bomb into this corner. The fastest line is a late apex wide approach which opens the door to a dive bomber who will use you as four extra wheels when they can't hold the inside due to excessive speed. That's wrong and the dive bomber will have to wait and you'll both lose time. Don't be that guy!!

Final Chicane: Same as turn 1 only it's much harder to go two wide. Best strategy is for one guy to back off except the final lap or two... the best passing opportunity on the track is only a few seconds away (front straight) so don't risk your entire race on a last second high risk braking attempt that can put you both in the soft legos or end up with you waiting for a driver you punted to recover. See 3:00 - 3:17 in the video above for what can happen when two guys play chicken going into the chicane... they both lost several spots. See 12:15-12:30 where Tidgney backed off a little, gave up the spot for a better run through the chicane and ended up getting the pass done on the front straight.

The front straight (start/finish) and back straight right after the kink (13 to 4) are very good passing spots. The back straight requires a better jump on the guy your passing and you have to make a decision before braking for the chicane... so be a little careful there. Everywhere else on the track it's often faster just to follow/draft and wait for an opportunity to pass where you won't lose a ton of time.

This race can be about "coopetition" in the early/middle parts of the race. A couple drivers working together can lose the pack or catch back up if the other guys are battling. When you get to the final laps then take of the gloves... That's exactly how I kept up with Twissy in the EU race... by myself I had NO chance... working with Tidgney (or really me leaching Tidgney's speed) I managed to be in the mix for the win right until the end. Have fun!

ATTENTION RACE OFFICIALS: We hey a new guy gtevolution that sent me a private message trying to figure out how to get started. He's waiting on his registry. Any chance we could allow him into Saturdays Rookie race?

Actually he didn't submit with a proper PSN ID... i.e. no GTP tag so his entry was rejected.

I told him about creating a GTP_ account on his PSN so he should be trying again soon after that's completed.

I told him about creating a GTP_ account on his PSN so he should be trying again soon after that's completed.

I assume he's up to speed on the qualifier so additional practice is not an issue (given he already submitted once). So if he is able to submit a new time with the proper PSN account (and has a replay available if we need it that shows he's running using a GTP tag PSN account) before tomorrow's race we'll get him in. đź‘Ť

The second he re-submits his qualifier he should follow steps 2-4 (from the GTP WRS-Online : Comprehensive Guide) if he wants to be processed quickly:

So you want to race online in an official WRS-Online Event? Great, follow these steps:

  1. Join the Official GTP_Registry
    • If you are not listed in the official registry you must submit your qualifier before proceeding to step 2.
    • See the GTP_Registry Qualifier - GT5 for complete instructions on how to run and submit your registry qualifier.
    • Once your registry qualifier is submitted and processed you be listed in the registry with a division and handicap and you can proceed to step 2.
  2. Fill out the 3D3 Racing Online Driver Database Entry Form
  3. Send a PSN friend request from your GTP tag PSN account to each of our private lounge accounts: GTP_3D3Racing, GTP_3D3_A, GTP_3D3_B
  4. Review the GTP OLR Rules & Guidelines
  5. Check the individual event threads and join us for practices and races and have fun. đź‘Ť (each event will have it's own google registration form -- see individual event thread for details)

Thanks for the help. I directed him to all you said. Also thanks for the track break down and vid. Very helpful...can't wait for the race. Wednesday was soooo fun. I'll try not to take out the hay bails this time :-)

Here is his PSN account GTP_Machete29. He's working on the registry again. We got him pointed in the right direction now :-)

I'll be available for practice today, maybe tomorrow, but not for the race. We have my 3 yr old Grandson for the weekend and he is usually wired up like most 3 yr olds!! Ya, I gave in on not participating.

Hey guys and many thanks to Bravojon who tries to integrate me to all that here. 👍 my new PSN is GTP_gtevolution just wanted to mention that and i´ll try to be ready tonight as its already 8pm in germany. However i read about the WRS and was fascinated as you are as it seems. Its a bit confusing for me to read through all requirements and so on thats why i asked a mate. If i´ll not be ready for tomorrow be prepared for a new DS3 opponent

We got your new submission and you'll be getting a PM in the next few hours. I want to let you know that based on your provisional division place you are not eligible for the rookie racing series.

You are welcome to join our other events of course, but Rookie Racing is exclusively for D3-Silver through D5 drivers. You can take part in the instruction hour and/or the rookie/veteran sprints of course, but you cannot run in the Rookie Feature race.

Scott, there is a one hour practice/instruction session prior to the race tomorrow! Hope to see you there!

Al

Al,

Arrived in Denver. 15 hrs to the minute. Honda Odyssey efficiency. Great having a 17 yr old daughter to share driving duties with.

Already scoped out a spot to setup the wheel and have their 60" projection TV to use sooooo, just have to get some practice laps in. Car is already broken in but I haven't even seen the track other than in Tim's video (Thanks btw!)

Hope to see you tomorrow. đź‘Ť

I can't join the room "due to incompatibility with the room host" who is hosting the room?

Al

Not me... I can host if it helps... I'll be heading there shortly. I notice there are 16 with vets... that's not going to work in the lounge unfortunately as a spot is reserved for the owner (3d3). If we get to 15 I'll just drop.

Looks like Tombstone is hosting followed by Vincent. We need to have an approved host otherwise it's going to be one connection issue after another.

Sorry about the hassles. Is it because I'm in Denver?

Very frustrating. Brought all my stuff along and then this. :grumpy:

My PS3 says I have 100% strength from the router but I keep getting dropped. Guess I should give up as the qualifying is starting and I could have used the instruction.....

Have fun guys.

Scott

Was fun guys. Especially the last (sprint) race. Very close racing there ;).

Sorry for all bumps and etc.

See you all next week .

Nice race to watch ,guys đź‘Ť

Jammy congrats with the win of the main race.

Fun today fellow Rookies, thanks much for the competition! That was only my second race and my first race ever with tire wear and fuel on fast. Its a whole different ballgame when your tires are basically different every two laps or so. I loved it! Great experience.

Congrats to Jammy for the win and thanks to Tim for the track tutorial and technical governance....

I am bummed for Tombstoneplt who went through so much effort to participate and was thwarted by ghosts in the machine.....

Cheers!

Yah, felt sorry for Scott (Tombtoneplt) also... sometimes the stars just don't align.

One observation from the race that is not driver specific....Pick your spots to pass wisely, especially on a track with two clear relatively easy passing zones.

Trying to pass on a very fast/flowing/technical section under braking is not usually good race craft unless you are seriously getting held up. Maybe if you are on a different pit strategy with fresh tires or being held up or a similar scenario and you get desperate. And of course if the driver in front makes a serious error, but otherwise you are just costing yourself valuable time.

In the race I saw several guys stick the nose in at the last minute in turn 1 causing some slight contact or having both drivers take very bad lines on exit... remember if you don't have sufficient overlap you can't expect the driver in front to give you room. This costs both drivers time without any pass actually taking place. Or the hairpin where if you stick the tip of your nose in at the last minute, you force the guy wide, but also get forced too far inside to get a good run on exit. Again, every time I saw this move both drivers lost time and not one pass was successful. Turn 4, the sharp right which is the final turn in sector 1 is a terrible place to try and pass under braking going into the apex, you need to go wide to get any momentum on exit. It's great place/technique to cause an accident which I saw once early in the race.

By showing a little patience you can get by on exit (which won't cost you speed) or in the draft (which will gain you time). And at the same time you'll have much less chance for contact -- which should avoided at all costs per the OLR.

Overall though the race was fun to watch and there were several extended battles taking place. Looked like fun. Hope you guys enjoyed this combo as much as I did.

Thanks for the thoughts. Should have hard wired to the router. Tried to do the Test Track challenges while you guys raced. Darned Lotus Elise! Very touchy car. Can't get first on that one.

Sounds like the racing was good. I might still run the Golf around that track for a bit since I went to the trouble of setting it up and tuning it.

Don't know if I can make next week. Prob driving back to Moose Jaw.

Here are the results:

event81_res_ac.png

First ever tie for pole position in our history... had me tongue tied as we have no good tie breaker. Gave pole to Al because Jammy was a last second registration and Al was first to sign up as I had no better criteria to use on the spot.

We'll have to come up with something... maybe handicap in the future? It's too hard to keep track of 2nd fastest quali lap since the first lap time gets removed from the screen by the 2nd lap if it's faster (and it usually is).

It was a great a great race, yesterday and thanks for the great instruction, Tim.
About the overtaking: iam agree with you about the basic rules and comments.

Nurburgring is really narrow track, if everyone in the same strategy, with same cars, close pace..., really hard to do the overtaking maneuver without any minor contact.
Iam always try to avoid it, sometime it happened a little contact.

If you seen the race, could i ask that have you noticed any "too much" situation about me?

Great tip Tim,

Focus on clean and fair racing and the results will come in the end.

Rookie Racing and incidents on track are inevitable but you all will see,the more you practice close racing, the less incidents will occur.:)

It was for sure a fun race to watch,I already see major improvements from most participants.đź‘Ť

One advice for all.
Review your replay, try to see the good and bad incidents, from others but also from yourself.:)
