I'd completely forgotten about this thread. :embarrassed: Well, it's Friday night here in the land of Oz. :D I'm doing some experiments with Vodka tonight having 'Pine Shots' which is basically a 50ml shot glass with a 50/50 mix of vodka and pineapple soft drink. :sly: 10 of those has gone down very nicely down the throat and I'm like a marshmellow at the moment, nicely toasted. :D:cool:

I want to ask you guys though, have any of you guys mixed Portello with Vodka and if so, what's it like?? I've got a bottle of Portello to mix as Portello Shots, but don't feel like wasting the last of the Vodka on a maybe drink. :) Quite a few of my Vodka experiments have gone very badly (eg. Vodka + Creaming Soda = COUGH MIXTURE!! :yuck::ill: )

Any and all opinions appreciated, even the ones saying I'm loopy for trying to mix it.👍

Since I got married, I've been drinking a lot more (No Parents! Whoo) so I've learned I really really like Captain Morgan Spiced rum and coke a lot. Not a big fan of tequilla, beer is good (I like corona the best), Vodka is great ( I like to mix it with OJ for a screwdriver. Last night my sister in law made us get disgusting coconut rum, luckily we had some buds or the night would have sucked. The coconut rum (parrot bay) was too sweet to really enjoy. I tried it with coke first, disgusting. We had to switch to Big red to skip the disgusting sweetness of it all. but yeah, drinking's fun.

I was having Bacardi, Malibu + Coke last night myself, pinched out of my wife's stash. :P Tasted alright since it was the first time I'd ever had Coconut Rum, I'm not one for those types of drinks normally. :embarrassed:

I also tried the Vodka & Portello shots. Came out better than expected, but need a different mix for good taste.....ended up being a 30/70 mix after fine tuning and slammed a few of them down for good measure.

No hangover this morning either. :D

Vodka Rockstar is apparently my official drink now. I love the stuff so much...
Cody I think you've had enough of it lately. It's not fun to spend your Saturday morning hung over, but that's what you did. 👍

Eh, there is that as well, but thats something different.

Vodka Rockstar is, well, Vodka mixed with a Rockstar. Rockstar 21 is a malt drink, I think...

Hmm I'm not sure. I know up here we have Rockstar+Vodka:

And I thought Rockstar 21 was just what it was called down there.

But if you're mixing your own vodka and Rockstar, then it's all cool.

See as hangovers were mentioned I will give this advice:

If you are able to still think even remotely coherently after drinking be sure to get at least a quart/liter (4 cups/two pints) of water in your system before sleeping. A hangover is basically dehydration. If you can counterbalance the effect before it starts you will feel immensely better in the morning.

And if you are hungover, don't do the coffe thing most people do. Sure, the caffeine can make you feel more alert, but it can also dehydrate you even more, which makes the headache even worse.

I can't stress this enough: the best way to avoid/eliminate a hangover is simply water.

Pedialyte and B1 vitamins help the most. Trust me. ;)

Yeah, drinking a lot of water before, during and right after drinking is the key to not getting hangovers.

My favorite drink: Apple Pie.

Ingredients:
1 qt. Everclear
1 gal. Apple Juice
1 gal. Cider, apple
7 sticks Cinnamon Stick
4 Cups Sugar

Mixing Instructions:
Mix apple juice, apple cider, sugar, and cinnamon sticks together. Boil until cinnamon sticks lose flavor. Add Everclear. Refrigerate.

And actually having FOOD in your stomach before you even start drinking is the best start to it all. Have a 1/2 decent meal before you go out and you'll be able to handle a lot more alcohol when you're drinking. 👍
Try the same thing on an empty stomach and you'll feel the same effects in half the drinks. Also, you'll get a worse hangover in the morning than anything else.
If you can't find a place to eat, drink some milk to line your stomach with something before you start.....that's what I've found over time to work for me. Results will vary from person to person as to what works for them.

Here's a drink I've been meaning to share for months now.

This drink was originally called the Icewine Poorboy. But I've re-christened it with a much classier name --the "Silver Ghost".

4 parts dry sparkling wine. We like to use a very dry Italian Prosecco.
1 part Riesling ice wine, though any sweet desert wine will do. We run the gamut from a muskat to chard. It must be sweet though, to balance out the next portion.
1 part brandy or cognac. We usually use Courvoisier, but any will do.

Directions: chill both wines to temperature. Mix and stir (do NOT shake!); serve in highball glass. Garnish with sliced oranges (cut in ring).

The result is a sparking wine with great depth and deep finish. Very easy drinking, but quite substantial as well. We served this at a dinner party a few months ago and got some really positive reviews. Now it's a common request when Mr and Mrs. M are over for a party.

Good, simple advice. It's common sense, but unfortunately that's something we all lack when we get home ****canned.

Shaking any drink isn't really good. It's too harsh on the ice and ends up watering down your drinks more than stirring. This discussion came up earlier in this thread, and I suggested the Nambe Twist which effectively chills your drink without using ice at all. I'm buying one in a couple weeks and I can't wait.

Your drink sounds amazing, but this isn't really the crowd to be drinking those kinds of specific drinks. I love the sweet apéritif ice wines, but it's not something I regularly stock my bar with.

I dunno about anyone else but the very first time I got drunk I made sure to drink a lot of water before I went to bed and so now I try to make sure I drink at least a litre before I sleep and a litre or two when I wake up. It’s just the habit I got into at the beginning of my drinking career and it’s served me well (only 2 hangovers, and I drink a lot quite frequently).

Yeah, I was involved in that discussion with FK. While I agree shaking causes more water to melt off the ice, I think that many cocktails (such as a traditional gin martini) actually calls for a certain amount of water in the mix --and the portion of alcohol in the recipe accounts for the 'watering down' effect.

I've mixed my martinis both ways; almost no ice + light stirring and plenty of ice + shaking and I find the extra water makes the drink a lot smoother and easier on the palette.

It is, of course a personal preference.

Yeah, GTP isn't exactly a 'dry Italian sparkling' crowd  But this one was just too good not to share.

I'm working on a knock-you-down shot-drink called a 'Double Tap' or 'Mozambique Drill'... which will probably suit the sensibilities of this group a little better. ;)

I'm also getting the recipe from a buddy who makes this shot drink called 'Polonium-210'... silent, lethal and untraceable.

Ooh.
Think you could post it before the weekend?
I believe I may be taking my liquor cabinet with me on a little trip this weekend :mischievous:

I'm quite positive there would be a few of us that couldn't tell the difference between Sambucca and Vodka, let alone a Riesling and a Cabarnet Savignon. ;)

Or lack of sensibilities after trying it out. :D

I like the sound of that, a radioactive drink. :D:D:D:D:D:tup:

I got a hold of some rather tasty vodka - its ginger flavored. Basically, like drinking Canada Dry with way more bite ;) Love the stuff.

Had a shot of tequila last night as well... still can't stand the stuff at all.

Okay... Polonium-210

1/2 shot dark rum (We used Capt. Morgan's Private Stock the night I had it)
1/4 shot triple sec (Grand Marnier)
1/4 (or 1/3, to taste) amaretto (Don't remember what brand it was)

Directions; mix and enjoy. Take it easy with this one... it's so smooth and easy drinking, you'll be blotto before you know it! ;) Please drink responsibly!

..and yes, the name of this insidious concoction was inspired by Mr. Litvinenk's unfortunate demise.

And sorry, Slicks for being a couple of days late. Had gotten the recipe from my buddy and forgot about it :indiff:

I'm back home after 4 years (for holidays), so I've been engaging in some rather heavy drinking lately... I usually don't drink much, but it's good to find out my limits are way beyond what they were, oddly enough.

I had 9 vodka screwdrivers last night and although not able to drive (not that I tried), was able to walk and hold a conversation perfectly. Also had about 6 Tom Collins today and was perfectly fine, as with the vodka.

Odd... there's still s'more stuff to try out.

You do realise that's about a bathtub full of liquor right?

I have come to a conclusion tonight. Flavoured Absolut Vodka = 👍. The Raspberry is a nice drop, I must investigate the other flavours......preferrably from my mate's liquor cabinet!!

I also have 1/3 bottle of Smirnoff still sitting here with my wife's name and mine on it too. :mischievous:

M-Spec, thanks for the recipe, will be trying that sooner rather than later. :)

Avoid Absolut Pear at all costs. It's not even worth trying. Peppar is also a no-go unless you're planning on making cesars.

Absolut Curant is luuuuuuuuuuuverly. I only have straight Absolut at the moment, but when the new fridge-freezer gets purchased (sometime in 2010, the way my car habit is going) it will get a good stock of flavoured Absoluts.

I'm going to try that Polonium oojit. Although since 210 emits a slight blue glow, I would have thought light rum and a touch of Blue Curacao would have been worth a shot (or five.) :)

Today's adventure for Mafs.

Remaining Smirnoff (from previous post I made) + Coke. I'm going to have some fun this afternoon after devouring that. :D
