Ok, next up, this is the weapons bay of a ...................

BUFF.

Big Ugly Fat... Fellow. Otherwise known as a B-52 Stratofortress.

I know it's not a B-1B, because I've been in the bomb bay of a B1-B, and it didn't have the arched roof like that...

No, you're correct after all. Sorry! The picture I took has the weapons rack set up for a different kind of bomb, so it's hard to see the ceiling. Dang, B1-B was my first guess, too, because it was painted white inside. My mistake.

Go again - sorry for screwing this one up.

Hrm, my image didn't show up... but it counted against my upload limit. Odd. Let's try again.

My instant reaction was F-100 Supre Sabre, but that's definitely not correct. Interesting challenge!

That would be the one Carrera 👍
Post one up

BTW Why are you never on MSN anymore?

Looks kind of like a Douglas Devastator with floats, but that's not quite right. I've got a few other guesses... I'll edit them in as I think of them.

And here's edit #1: Vought Kingfisher? I forget the designation.

Vought OS2U Kingfisher it is. Significant for the high-lift flaps and spoilers that allowed it to be catapult-launched at a time when Naval types said only a biplane would do.

You, Duke.

No cheating. This is the most generic picture I could find, but the filename gives it away. I had other pictures I liked better, but they all actually showed the name in them.

I think that is a Heinkel 112.

Pre-WWII design that looked extremely modern but lost-out to the Bf109 for adoption by the Luftwaffe. Seems to have been produced only for export. For a moment I thought it was another plane, which I might post next.

Correct! It's not clear why it lost to the Me109, because the He 112 performed quite well in early testing and was very fast. It was well liked by pilots and crews, but never adopted as a mainstay fighter.

Your go, 911.

From what I read it was actually quite similar in performance and favored by some of the test pilots, but lost out due to political considerations.

I don't know when 911's going to come back, so if you feel the urge to post one up, go ahead.

That is an Avro York, I claim my $1000.

I am not waiting for confirmation because the last time I did I seem to have got jumped by the Rotch monster. :grumpy:

This is the plane I thought the He112 might be.

It isn't as difficult as you may be thinking. You probably have never seen a picture of this particular plane (I struggled to find a photo to post) but there should be enough in the photo that looks really familiar to identify it as related to a very famous type.

If you know your history you will have heard of this.:)

I do believe that's an ME-262 HGIII prototype from about 1942. They put a Jumo 210 in the nose to test the airframe, because the jets were not available and they couldn't afford to wait for testing on the frame. The plane also had the underwing jets fitted.

This is indeed the first prototype of the Me262 Schwalbe (hence filename: swallow) with a piston engine to test the airframe. It later had the jet engines fitted but kept the piston engine which was just as well because on the first flight both jets burned-out.

I thought the Duke would know of it.

If you look at the link name, it gives it right away, so don't. This is another rare bird.

Arrrgggghh, I have seen this soooo many times, It's on the tip of my tounge. I know its an X something something (us experimental plane) but I cant remember which, it will come to me soon.

Hint: it was designed to escort a larger aircraft that looked a lot like it.
