I just picked this up yesterday, an 02 Greco Les Paul (LG-70)! :D

Pickups are DiMarzio's Air Classic (N) and Seymour Duncan's Distortion (B). All around Gotoh hardware, and a push/pull split coil tap on the tone knob. She sounds amazing!

My father technically owns them, my favourite to learn on is the Gibson.

Sweet guitars! Although you really need to persuade your dad to get a Stratocaster with a maple neck. Believe me, play some blues on a maple Strat and you won't go back :sly:

New addition to the collection......

....popped in to see a mate who works in one of my local guitar shops and this caught my eye. Mainly because I just love the way it looks (I know Surf guitar vibe may not be everyone's cup of tea), but also the price.

Its not a Fender, the previous owner had it modified, the stock pickups went and the headstock logo was switched to Fender (some people are weird like that) but the neck plate clearly shows what it is.

Plays amazingly sweet, with a bag load of sustain (not in the same league as my Westbury) as the bridge in locked down.

Most of all I couldn't turn it down as I picked it up for £100.

Love new toys.

Nice guitar Scaff! Pretty much a bargain it seems as well!

Seeming this thread has been bumped up, I've started looking into a new guitar. My current one (For those that can't remember or didn't know I currently have a Epiphone SG G-310), although it has been fantastic in terms of sound and being a great starter guitar, I feel as though I need to step up in terms of equipment. For my next step up I'm looking for something which primarily has things my current guitar doesn't. As an example my SG doesn't have a tremelo bar, so that's something I really want. Budget wise I'm looking for something probably from around £200 to £390 at a push. I'm currently looking at a Ibanez S420 (http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/84780) which I love the looks of, Ibanez are renowed for their more overdriven type sound which suits what I'm into playing perfectly. But I'm open to any other recommendations, so anyone got any good ideas or thoughts on the guitar I'm looking at?

Oooooooooooo buying a new guitar always fun.

For that budget you have a fair number of choices open to you, from the top end of the Squier range to the start of the Fender range (for the classic trem option a Strat is always worth a look). Ibenez is also a good place to look, but don't for the love of god go for the hideous black and yellow thing they do, to a host of Yamaha's, Jacksons, etc.

If it was me I would set aside a day and spend it in the biggest guitar shop you have near you, and try out as many different options as I could. Particularly as its often the only way to know if a guitar really suits you, things like the very slim necks on Ibenez don't always work for everyone.

If it was me with your budget and needs this is what I would be looking at...

http://www.dv247.com/guitars/prs-se-custom-22-electric-guitar-tobacco-sunburst-tremolo--65791

or

http://www.dv247.com/guitars/fender-standard-stratocaster-electric-guitar-black-rosewood--59956

A PRS or Mexican Standard, and would fall a but more towards the PRS.

If I was buying for myself however it would have to be one of these...

http://www.dv247.com/guitars/gretsch-g5245t-double-jet-electric-guitar-black--62708

...but the Gretch is most likely not going to give you the sound you talked about.

All three of the above will however give you a very different tone to the SG you have at the moment and as such would be ideal to compliment it.

BTW - Thanks for the feedback on my new toy, it sounds lovely (and very different to my Westbury), plays very easily and was a total bargain.

Whats the deal with E-series 1984-87 Fender Squire Strats? I've got people saying they suck others saying they're fantastic. We have 2.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder mate. Some of the so called "experts" say Fender cut costs hugely in the 80's and thus all 80's Fenders were rubbish . I had a 80's Japanese strat for a few years, wish I still had it, it played and sounded great. It's like the Mexican strats now, some say a strat isn't a real strat unless it's a US one.

My only piece of advice is if you like your E-series Strats just play and enjoy them and to hell what others think and say.

I have to second that.
If an electric guitar sounds good unplugged, no matter what kind of pickups are in it, you are about $100 -150 USD from the pickups you WANT in it.

And if you get them from some body like www.carvin.com
you can not only get the set VERY inexpensively, they are pre wired onto the pickguard, and are practially "drop-in" replacement.

The important part is to find the right basic guitar.

I bought my son a Cort electric. There were two in the store. Both had bookmatched flame maple tops, humbuckers, and coil taps. One was purple and the one I bought is emerald green.
The purple one was lots prettier...till I played a few progressions on it.
The Green one just sang.
My only complaint is that the tone know doesn't really seem to do anything till it's at one extreme or the other.
It has adequate pick-ups in it.
But it's a set of Duncans from being AWESOME.

Well soon I'll be able to tell you. We just bought a 1987 American Strat to compare.

Slight bump here:

I finally got around to date my mexican made Stratocaster and it was made in 1993. I was hoping it to be a pre-2000 model as the earlier models had the better pick-ups, but as far back as 1993 came as a very pleasant surprise!

Although I wonder what she might be worth in x years from now, I'd rather sell a kidney than to sell my strat. It is my only guitar, but the value is is to me is indescribable. In December I will have owned it for 3 years I believe, and she looks as beautiful as ever.

On that, I finally got around to upgrade from my miserable basic guitar pack amp I have owned for years now. It's a Fender Mustang II, 40 watt amplifier that Fender just released. I was originally going for a tube amp, but since I'm a student and live in an apartment I don't have the possibility to play it loud to get the tube really hot to bring out the desired sound. Also the price of the Mustang was incredible bang for your buck, and it has so many sounds! There's more; you can customize each and every sound, plug it into your USB port of your PC, store your tunes and edit them with Fender's FUSE software!

Check it out!

My strat sounds amazing on the '65 Twin Reverb amp setting

I looked at the Mustang a few weeks ago and the Fuse software is very, very cool.

I however ended up going for a Vox Valvetronix VT30, similar idea to the Mustang (modeling amp with effects) but with a Valve power amp stage and power soak, which effectively gives you between 0.2 and 30 watts.

Lets you overdrive the tube without going to silly volumes.

All I have right now is my Epi les paul jr. I love that guitar but unfortunately haven't picked it up in months. I know a lot of people would hate my guitar, but for the music I play, it works perfectly. Just turn the volume and tone to 10 and turn that gain up on the amp.

A little off topic but probably not worth a new thread.

Look at the following guitar tab:
e|-----------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------| Bar One
G|-7----9--7----9--7--(9)------------|
D|-------------------------9---------|
A|-----------------------------------|
E|-8--------8-------8---0---0---------|

You see how the two picks of the G and E strings are simultaneous? I don't understand how to play them. Guitar Pro sites play them at the exact same time like hybrid picking or something. Can anyone help?

EDIT: Never mind, need to learn to finger pick.

Was the pickups changed??

On the Black Strat?

Neck-Custom hand wound fat 50's strat P/U
Middle-Custom wound strat P/U
Bridge-Custom Seymore Duncan SSL-5 P/U

All come standard with this limited Custom Shop series

A little stats and info from the Fender website:

"David Gilmour and the Fender Custom Shop are extremely proud to release one of the most iconic and highly-anticipated musical instruments of the past 50 years, the Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Signature Series Stratocaster, based on David’s famous “Black Strat” guitar. A cornerstone of Pink Floyd’s revolutionary and incomparable sound, Gilmour’s Black Strat is featured extensively on The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and his critically-acclaimed 2006 solo effort, On An Island.

The Fender Custom Shop worked hand-in-hand with David and his longstanding guitar technician, Phil Taylor, to create his signature model, a reproduction of the Black Strat—complete with its unmistakable look, sound and feel. Featuring a Black lacquer over Three-color Sunburst alder body with a black pickguard, one-piece maple neck, custom pickups, and David’s now-famous electronics and shortened vintage tremolo arm, the David Gilmour Signature Series Stratocaster is as beautiful, powerful and idiosyncratic as David’s playing. Additionally, David’s signature guitar comes with a custom case, Evidence Audio™ high-end guitar cable, David’s three-disc Live in Gdansk CD/DVD package, and a copy of Phil Taylor’s The Black Strat book."

If your refering to the Les Paul, no I kept it stock with the bridge P/U Humbucker Classic 57' plus and the neck P/U when I bought the guitar was inoperable so they swapped it out for a 57' BurstBucker Pro P/U.
