High School

My last day of school was a week ago because Arizona. The past month or so was pretty interesting because there was a protest, then our school was in the news for a couple days, there were a couple of fights, and a big pillow fight. The protest happened as a result of students (belatedly) discovering some rape allegations from like seven months prior. Basically, back in October, a special-needs girl attended homecoming with supervision. Near the end of the dance, the supervisor had lost track of the girl and couldn't find her. Apparently, the girl and some guy had went outside and into the desert by the school and fooled around. There was a police investigation of the incident, but they didn't find sufficient evidence to make a case. The girl didn't really understand what had happened. Some students found out about this way after the case was closed, thought that the school hadn't taken action, got pissed off, and staged a protest outside school on a Friday morning.

I came to school a little late that morning, got out of the car and walked up to the front of the school, and to my surprise there's a huge crowd. There's a couple posters exclaiming "NO MEANS NO!" and a lot of disorder among everyone. Most people were just there to get out of class, but every couple minutes, someone would start shouting "NO MEANS NO!" and the crowd would chant it for maybe a minute. I didn't feel like going to first period, so I stuck around near the edge of the crowd and hung out with another guy from my first period class. We find another guy we know, who's in our fourth period class. The three of us were talking about what was going on for a while, joking around. The guy from our fourth period class was joking "what if I told them I did it". So, you know, we're going along with it and egging him on to go in and get his ass kicked, thinking he was joking. Later that day in fourth period, he asks the teacher what would happen if he was "the one who did it". The teacher assumes he's just being ballsy as usual and tells him to stop talking about it.

About a week later, he stops showing up from school. At the same time, there's word going around that the administration "knows who did it" now. For the rest of the year (about a month), he's not at school. Honestly, knowing him, I'm not too surprised. He's kind of... weird.

That's messed up, to put it lightly.

The Maths exam was suspiciously easy...I had to rush the English exam though, I spent most of my time on the text response essay so I had to rush the language analysis essay.

Yeah, you've really got to work on your time management. You do know what the HSC involves, right? Two papers, each of them two hours long, with five essays and a short(-ish) answer section. And four of those essays require you to respond to multiple texts (as many as four, depending on your prescribed texts). It's the same for Standard and Advanced (not sure what happens in English Studies, since my school doesn't offer it). And if you're thinking of Extension, that involves even more work.

Three more days of regular classes. As of right now I'll only be taking my writing II final and my civics final. So as of right now I'm finishing my senior year with 6 B's and 3 A's. Kinda disappointed in myself that I didn't try this hard earlier in my high school career. Not looking forward to graduation practice (I've seen people write about their experiences on here). I am looking forward to getting my yearbook though. Hopefully there is more than one picture of me in it this year.

Today I have a short day and get dismissed at 12:10, because some carnival thing. Never realized I'd get a short day. I still have 4 blocks, they're just condensed.

Yeah, you've really got to work on your time management.
Indeed I do. I forgot to bring my watch so I had to assume that I'd spent too much time on the first essay, so I was writing the second one as fast as I could. I was able to finish it, but it wasn't very good.

If it helps, I always tell my students not to memorise an entire essay. It might make sense to do so, but it's really obvious when you do it and you limit yourself because you can't predict what the question will be. But you do need to memorise some stuff - like quotes, which you will need.

You should aim to memorise about 70% of the information that you need, and keep the remaining 30% free to fit the question.

Make sure you have a strong thesis without being too complicated - you should be able to break it down into elements, with each element being the central point of each body paragraph.

Use trigger words - specific, memorable words or short phrases that are directly related to your thesis and are repeated throughout the essay; it might be a bit on the nose, but it helps show the connection between current line of argument and thesis.

Aim for sophistication. For example, when we did Module C, my Year 12s looked at WH Auden's "O What is that Sound". It's very easy to point to the metaphor in the final stanza, but metaphor is boring - there's a whole lot there on zoomorphism and paradox, which would make for a much richer analysis.

Find out what your prescribed texts are. The full lists are published on the Board of Studies website, but your school will know what each text you are studying will be. You will need to read them multiple times - first time through to enjoy and understand it; second time to analyse it - so the sooner the better.

You're actually starting to remind me of a teacher from my school .

Anyway got an Ancient History test on Thursday the day before my Japanese excursion. Interesting turn of events I say, well good thing is I need to catch up some Ancient History work on Tuesday so this can be treated as a Study too :P.

As for my report card, I'm still in the All-Round area with 3 B's (Top of English Studies too :D) 2 C's and 1 D.

God I'm so done with some kids at my school. During lunch some kid thought that it would be funny to throw a bunch of cucumbers onto my back. They where the same kids that nearly ruined a vending machine by stuffing vegetables into it. Luckily only a few more days dealing with these certain people.

Last week, some already graduated seniors vandalized my school last week as they spay painted the walls and ground, cut the power to two buildings, and glued some of the cafeteria doors as senior prank. They're all caught (all eleven of them) and are charged with a felony and $16,000 worth of damages, three days after graduation.

Psychology is half of it when it comes to Exams. A lot of friends of mine who stress end up failing or just passing while the ones who just chill through the test easily pass, 2 of them don't even study.

Just found out that the general knowledge test I have to do tomorrow is three hours long, made up of two essays and heaps of multiple choice questions

Reminds me of the provincial exams I get here in BC. I think the English one I had last year had some multiple choice, some written responses and an essay. There was supposed to be two essays (A "synthesis" essay and an original composition), but one got dropped for whatever reason. The time limit, like other provincials, was 3 hours.

I've completed both my math exams, and I'm so hoping that I get a decent result for both. The first exam was rather easy but a few questions on the second exam baffled me.

That three hour test was awful. I was quickly finishing the multiple choice questions and rushing to do the second essay when I found out that I had an entire hour left . Tomorrow will be me last set of exams for this semester, Physics and Software Development. Considering the fact that I only have access to one practice Physics exam and none for Software, I don't think I'll be doing too well in either exam...

Well, our senior prank happened today. The entire first floor was covered in balloons. All you heard when walking in the halls were balloons popping every five seconds. Overall it was a very lame prank (last year they filled a room with red solo cups).

In my Junior year, the seniors literally made a pyramid out of the cafeteria tables and zip-tied all the lockers. The principal wound up cracking down on all future pranks after that. Our prank was basically riding bicycles in school and spraying silly string everywhere. I thought it was dumb because all I wanted to do was get through the day.

I have this girl in my year who was forced to repeat for not attending enough classes and she is driving me insane

At first she seemed alright, she came sit with us from time to time though she is pretty not into school as she seems to leave school before we have Japanese, so not much problems. Then I got to know her more.

YOU CAN'T BE 🤬 HAPPY AROUND HER! Unless it involves her. She has come from a rough time, people closer to her have told me about a tragic event 2 years ago which I could understand her grief then but now it seems ridiculous on how she isn't moving on (though her family isn't much help). If you try to bring up something to lighten up the mood she'll shoot you down with the same story which gets everyone around her depressed and everyone then shares depressing stories with her. The amount of times she does it makes it feel like it's attention seeking. Not to mention how much of a 🤬 is. She easily snaps. Today t English Studies, a friend of mine brok one of her fake nails, at first it looked like she joked it off judging by her reaction but after my free period it turned out she was very P-O'd

Worst thing is that I can't just get her outt of my surroundings, as she is friends with 3 of my close friends, and especially when 1 of them has had issues with Depression they are pretty tight and since he is friends with a lot of my other friends, we all are together in a group and she is practically annoying everyone but the 3 friends. The only way out is to abandon all my friends or cause a huge war between us :(.

With only just over a week left, I'm in a good spot. The English scrapbook is due this Friday, and I have all the analysis done, though I still haven't finished all the visuals. We're studying for math and chemistry finals now. I'm allowed a single piece of paper for the math final as a cheat sheet. I'm going to write on it in very small writing. Not single or double space; more like half space.

You guys have it easy, if you're caught in a final here with a cheat sheet, no matter how or where it is, you get a zero, have to redo the test the next year, and you will be on the edge of losing your spot in school.

At least it separates the worthy from the unworthy.

I'm just wondering what would happen if I came in with more than one sheet. Not that I'm planning to do that though. I think I'll have enough space on one side with how small I'm writing.

The Physics exam felt pretty easy. I didn't have much time to revise for Software Development, so I didn't do too well in that exam. I'm sure I passed, though.
