I have a theory. There are two types of people that purchased GT5.

I've been a fan since 1998 and I have never been let down, save for maybe GT3 only because I had gotten used to 500+ cars and tons of events in GT2 down to like 150 cars in GT3.

Here's MY theory: The odd number GT's are always worse than the evens. 2 was better than 1. 4 was better than 3.

6 will be better than 5.

Now thats what I call a well supported theory. 👍
I just hope the trend continues.

Gt5 is my first GT, (besides prolouge) and i defend and praise it everytime i get to! sure its not perfect, but you cannot class it as a arcade game.

I've played all the gt games, and I like gt5, but for the time I was more impressed with gt4. Gt5 a- spec is a joke and without dlc new car selection is lacking. Original release of Gt5 felt like gt4.5

Hype is one thing. Half baked vanilla is another. All the hate/complaints/criticism GT5 got and still getting - almost always deserved.

Well, there are some people who bought the game and really liked it for what it was, even though it wasnt perfect. Then there are others who bought the game and absolutely hated it.

This doesnt always stay the same, however. The people who loved the game from the start may have a change of heart later on and go on to nitpick how lava orange metallic (just using a random name here, not sure if this exists) doesnt look the way it does in real life. Vica versa, people who hated the game may love it now, as the major updates might've pretty much fixed everything that was wrong in their eyes.

Nitpicking isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as its not the only thing you are saying about the game. This thread seems to be geared towards people who complain abiut the game no matter what happens. In that case, its a lost cause and they should buy something else.

Nitpicking can improve a game if a very large group of people notice the problem at hand and it eventually gets fixed. It's a part of every gaming community and it should be expected no matter what.

Look at it this way: at least the game isnt severly unbalanced, leading to the banning of certain cars and tracks as they're too broken to compete against or on(coughpokemoncough). I noticed in mario kart ds that about 1/6 of the karts are actually usable and the rest are complete ****.

I bought GT5 having played previous GT games and I wouldn't be so eager to call it a success. I enjoyed it, but it's a bit lacking given the long development time.

I have had GT 1, 2, 3, 4, Prologue, and I thought that GT 5 was going to be the best GT ever. Sadly it was not. Its not a bad game, its just lacking in areas. Less tracks, A spec races, one make races, B spec could have been better. GT 4 over all was a better game, but GT 5 is still a very good game. I did buy it on day one and still play it. I guess you could say that GT got stale, it was not the leap forward I had hoped for.

I have played it from the first GT1 demo, and to be honest i hyped up the game myself, i was thinking there was going to be 1000 premium cars, loads of tracks(Including all those from previous GT's), night/day Le Mans 24 hours, realistic damage where bodywork falls off, and your car breaks down when you damage it to much.
I was thinking it will be the most complete GT game in the history of GT games. I wasn't a GTPlanet forum reader at that time, and with 6 years development time, you can't blame me for thinking that, i had no information at what was happening inside PD.

But when the game finally came out, i was thankful that it had come out, and that it didn't take a day longer. Deep down inside i did feel a Bit sad that there wasn't more, and was surprised there was only that many cars. And that they had ported nearly all the cars from GT4.

But how can you stay mad, when PD give you the ultimate driving simulator on console, probably the best racing game on console to date, that i have played.

I suppose I was the second type. I had never played a GT game prior to GT5. I heard about the awesome stuff, with the 1000 cars, weather, etc etc., so I jumped on it. Even bought a Driving Force GT with it.

I haven't been disappointed at all. In fact, I'm fairly certain I've put more hours into GT5 than I have any other game this gen.

EDIT: And it's absurd how much they've added to the game with updates. No game has seen this much post-release support.

I have a theory that I'm neither of those groups. I played and love GT1, 2, 3, 4, and 5P, and am still disappointed in GT5. Even the things that GT5 did well in the past are poorly presented in GT5.

GT5 should be better than past GTs. It's not.

The 2012 Miami Heat should be better than last year, but they certainly aren't...:sly:

I'd rather play GT5 than any prior GT if only because of the graphics.

Sorry but I can't go back to GT1 and 2 anymore. They were part of my teenage years, and they should stay there. GT1 looks like ragged ass now. Don't get me started on handling and features that weren't developed yet.

The only GT that could have a case against GT5 is GT4.

Besides the premium/standard car deal, this one doesn't stray too far off the path of the last 4 and a half titles.

This is exactly the problem, isn't it? It's the same old tripe from years ago, with zero advancement in key areas such as customisation, tuning and aftermarket.

I've played every GT - and enjoy GT5 - but this game is seriously lacking in so many areas, with so many insane game design choices. I'd say that telling people who were disappointed "deserve their disappointment" is frankly a misinformed, misjudged and downright idiotic statement to make.

I have completed all of the GT series and TT. I love GT5 and play daily. In my opinion it is the best of the of all the Gran Turismo games.

Having said that it's still not perfect, but I am glad it's still "under construction". As it's still far where it should be after all these years.

Here's MY theory: The odd number GT's are always worse than the evens. 2 was better than 1. 4 was better than 3.

And if GT6 can make it onto the PS3, then that trend should, without a doubt, continue. Because like the previous games they'll have that solid foundation laid down, which can perfected and expanded upon (PD's speciality, imo). If it gets pushed onto the PS4 though..........well, we'll see. You just never know ^^

There are two types of people that play GT5:

The ones who race their cars with appropiate stock tires.

The 🤬 that only race everything on lame Racing Softs.

6 will be better than 5.

True, I've thought this as well for some time. The odd numbered GT's, 1 and 3, have always revolutionary while the even numbered GT's are an evolution built on the previous iteration. GT1 for example brought the revolutionary concept of GT to the PS1, while GT2 used basically the same technology (as far as I can tell) but had more events, more tracks, and more cars (Around 1000!!!). GT3 introduced GT to the PS2 with updated graphics and physics, but had few tracks and like only 200 cars (akin to the way GT5 only has 200 true cars, because they had to be re-modelled in order to be brought to the new console), while GT4 had better graphics, around a 1000 cars, and more tracks & events.

GT6 should be to GT5 what GT4 was to GT3. That if GT6 gets released for the PS3, if it doesn't we're screwed...

The people that were disappointed with GT5 at launch, were the ones that had been playing racing sims between then and when GT4 came out. They were disappointed because GT5 felt very outdated; not a lot of customization, limited racing options, real small career mode, brain dead A.I., and a lot of other issues that have been listed on this forum a million times now over the last year.

I've noticed that you have racing sim fans, and then you have Gran Turismo fans. The GT fans, that group plays GT only and thinks its gods gift to the world. I noticed this group gets very confused when the sim racing fan group tells them no, that isn't true, GT5 is in fact not the best thing ever. They are absolutely right, GT5 is good, but even after all of the updates, it still falls way behind what are now considered the big names in the racing sim genre.

PD took way to long to bring GT5 out, and the amount of feature creep on the title during development really hurt it and tarnished the reputation of the franchise.

Gran Turismo 5 really should have come out in 2008, instead of Prologue.

Massive generalisation :dunce:

Massive exaggeration :dunce:

GT fans like GT because it is GT. There is something about a Gran Turismo game that different than any other sim on the market.

Massive subjectiveness :dunce:

I am pretty sure a lot people including your so called "sim racers" think GT5 is the best sim they have played or enjoy the most.

PD took way to long to bring GT5 out, and the amount of feature creep on the title during development really hurt it and tarnished the reputation of the franchise.

Not really when it helped it sell like crazy and made it into an overwhelming commercial success that in no doubt is going to aid the Gt series. Hype is all done by yourself no one forces you into the hype.

The franchises reputation is certainly not tarnished not after its being known as that racing game which is constantly getting updated or that game that trains gamers into real racers. There have been big leaps in GT universe since GT5. A lot of people, and I mean a lot still have faith in Gt5 or GT series and that is because their is so much potential for the GT series. Yes we would like physics like iRacing or the tracks of Shift 2 but we would not like it anywhere else except in Gran Turismo.

This post is s joke right?

You seem to totally forget and ignorw those of us that have been with the franchise since GT(1) and have heard all the promises before and each time witnessed an overhyped under delivered product.

Some of the SAME issues of note since GT3 still haven't been addressed - and already they are touting GT6?

The only reason the GT Franchise is so successful sales wise is because many of us have the crazy addiction to all things Gran Turismo and buy every edition they produce just for the hell of it - even though we know its not going to fully deliver ;)

Now where did I put my Japanese edition of GT5P??? I think I want to fight with foreign menus again :)
as much as we may hate gt5 ... were secretly in love with how freaking amazing it is!!!

I have all the GT's but don't exactly like all of them, I kind of have a hatred towards GT4, because it seems that when it came out, GT went from this sim racer that emphasized the racer part, to a sim racer that put an extreme emphasis on the sim part. But something about GT5 really stands out from all of the games, but I'm not sure how, it seems to have its own charm to it, but I mainly bought GT5, because I just love Gran Turismo, simple as that.

that game that trains gamers into real racers.

lmao

This game hasn't trained anyone into real racers. The few people that got signed onto racing teams from GT Academy, already had thousands of hours of real world racing experience. GT5 had nothing to do with it.

What does this have to do with the topic? Oh and for the record, Jann doesn't have any real world track experience.. ;)
