No way I'm buying this DLC if the cars are FT-86 and GT-R '12.
- There are already 2 FTs and I'm not fond of neither of them
- I already have the GT-R '12 remade in GT5 (just change a few things and it's there)
They're better than nothing, disappointing, but better than nothing. Let's jut hope the other 15 cars it comes bundled with are worth it.

The Celica and the Supra were always based on the same platform... At least, that is what I was lead to believe. My understanding for the next generation Supra was that it was always going to be what we now know is the Lexus LFA.

New tweet:

東京モーターショーへ向けた「FT-86グランプリ」予選、トップは2分の壁を破って1分59秒台。2位に入ってるsamuraiさんはスティックか。それもすごいね。

For the Tokyo Motor Show "FT-86 Grand Prix" qualifying, the top units in 1 minute 59 seconds, beating the walls of two minutes. I entered the # 2's or samurai stick. It it also great.

Who says we'll have to pay for the FT-86? People jump to conclusion so fast. This may be included in an update! Toyota could use the car as promotion for the real world model? It's suppose to weigh 2700lbs. with 200hp, like the MX5 its a fun to drive car, not an exotic.

This... as the FT-86 was shown multiple times using the game engine in presentations I think it'll come for free in the next updates.

And as Kaz retweeted the comment where a guy ask for the 2012 GTR, I believe we're going to get it too.

Well, with DLC now in play, it's reasonable to think that the FT-86 II and the GTR '12 will probably come in a DLC pack with other cars. I mean if they're going to sell DLCs, they might as well have these two cars come with the car pack. Of course, I also agree on the possibility of getting the car for free as we did in GT5:P and GT5 Spec II, perhaps as you say, mainly due to promotional reasons.

I'm with the brazilian on this one.

I'd say the FT-86 II will be (and should be) a free update, as it's been used in too many commercial spots and promos for both GT5 and Toyota. Toyota and PD probably have an agreement to mutually publish their products.

On the other hand, the 2012 GT-R is probably gonna come as DLC

The Celica and Supra were only on the same platform from 1979 to 1985.

You guys are getting you facts mixed, the LFA was meant to be the new Supra but got given to Lexus, the FT86 is the Celica replacement, there is currently a new Supra in the design phase.

LFA was kinda like a "look what we built" for Lexus. Good move really. I really respect that car. Always liked Lexus. Just never passionate like the LFA.

anyway, here's hoping for more hints via twitter.

...the FT86 is the Celica replacement...

Err...no. It may be called the Celica in some far away places, but the car was built with the AE86 Corolla in mind.

Edit: and if the new DLC contains the production version of that car....awesome.

I get what you mean, but the Corolla was a cheaper car; this car looks to be aiming a bit higher, so does actually fit in the gap left by the Celica.

Anyway, the marketers are keen on calling it a Celica, it seems, although the engineers etc. all like the 86 designation. Some people are even calling it a mini LFA, but I don't think the Lexus badge would fit.

If may fit in that gap left by the Celica, but it's not the Celica replacement. ;)

Even so, it will only be called a Celica (if they go that route) in certain countries. I'm assuming the USA will only be getting the Scion FR-S or whatever, so it doesn't really matter to me.

Does it matter what it's called?

All they'd need to do is introduce a convertible / spider / whatever version and they'll have an MR2 replacement, too.

Toyota has in recent years changed every commonly known model names they used for decades for their replacements, the Corolla became the Auris, the Starlet the Yaris, the Carina the Avensis, etc.
So it was to be expected that a small coupé neatly fitting into the slot left by the Celica was going to have a different name.
What's more, the FT-86 was going to be completely different than the last Celica, smaller, sportier and rear wheel drive.
So to illustrate that and to suggest some heritage, they resurrected and altered an old name (AE86) of an iconic car which encapsulates all those aspects.
It's just marketing and positioning a car into that market, it'll attract former Celica (and even possibly former MR2) owners whilst also trying to attract those who wouldn't buy a car labelled Celica for whatever reason.

As for the production version itself being included, that's nice but I much prefer the look of the concept version already included which is a hoot to drive.

I had the same thought.

As for the Supra/LFA. I really think the LFA is the foundation of the next generation Supra. It just make sense.

Why can't the LFA just be taken as Toyota's/Lexus' first attempt at a supercar? The Supra was never a super car. It was a class in the range of sports cars. It can't be a true successor if it's not in the same class/market as the original. It'd be a completely different car. I apologize if there are exceptions to this, as I'm not a super expert on automotive history.

The FT-86 on the other hand, can be labeled as a successor as the AE86, due to the size, drivetrain, and similar marketing appeal. Not sure if it'll attract previous Celica owners though, because previous Celicas were FF, or 4WD, unless I'm wrong that there were FR Ceilicas in the past. Again, I'm no expert.

I could not care less about the toyota. I look forward to seeing the Subaru version. All wheel drive, more horsepower. Sounds good to me.

Seriously? More like put the engine mid-ship, then they'll have an MR2 replacement.

Yeah, in terms of purity. But there isn't anything else like it from Toyota, is there? No two-seat "sporty" drop-top to be found at all - that's a market, that is.

EDIT: I know the FT-86 is a 2+2, but I'm only talking hypothetically anyway.
@ analog: I'm hoping the final production car looks different to the FT-86 II (which is a step backwards, for me) - the test mules look promising on that front.

Up until the mid-eighties all Celicas were RWD, it wasn't until the 4th generation that they changed to FF and later some versions had 4WD.

The Subaru version is also RWD.

Check the thread for it in the Auto News section. Tons of photos posted lately of the production version(s).

For real. This has turned into the FT86 subforum.

Who'd of thought a simple posting of a car under a sheet would derail a thread so much.

Back on topic, no new tweet from Kaz. I'm interested to know if they're going to fix the weak draft in December's update.
