So where was I? I think it was when John and I had just got done eating at Lombardi's Pizzeria (two pizzas = $72 of awesome) and we decided to take a not-touristy stroll down streets we'd never been. Cool.

One of the first stops I made was to take a picture of the only other idiot driving a lowered car through Manhattan:

I didn't take many pics for a while. I was caught up in the scenery at night. We were in the general Little Italy and Chinatown area, and I was amazed at how I felt perfectly comfortable walking down these strange, dirty alleys like I did it every day. The buildings were all grungy looking, there were papers and trash all over the wide sidewalks, puddles in the gutter, and it seemed like the parts of Dayton where people never go. Yet I felt perfectly comfortable. Apparently that's just how it is around there. It couldn't have been too bad--that dirty old red brick apartment building had a freakin' G-Class sitting out in front.

After a little while I looked up and mentioned that I thought we were in Chinatown. The fact that all the signs had Chinese on them was my clue. We soon stumbled upon a stairway that went down under the street and I got all excited. Riding the subway was one of the things I wanted to do, and then I remember that I also wanted to go visit Times Square at night. I asked John to find out how far it was on the GPS--a whole 3 miles. I suggested we take the subway, so we walked down and tried desperately to read the most confusing map I'd ever laid eyes on. John was being a little girl about the whole thing, and I eventually talked some sense into him. We're taking the subway, damn it, now buy a ticket.

It was nearly impossible to take a picture in the car. It just so loud and shaky, waving up and down and left and right like crazy. Pretty fun. If you've ever seen in a movie or something where nobody ever talks to each other, that's true. Nobody spoke a word the whole time we were on the thing except me and John. Talk about awkward.

We eventually got to the Times Square station which surprised me quite a bit. It was enormous, nothing like the little thing that we got on at. We had to walk a good 5 minutes just to find the stairs out of the thing. But once we did we headed for the lights...

There's MistaX down in the corner of this pic:

Toys R Us is awesome btw. Anyone who has an ad or especially operates a store in Times Square is awesome.

I learned that the Ball stays in the same place all year long until it's time to drop it again:

And my favorite shot of the bunch, showing the people and the lights all the way up and all the way down:

Joyzee42.jpg

I could have sworn that I saw on the map Grand Central Station was just down the street from Times Square. I figured we'd walk to it, explore, and get on the subway there and head back downtown to the car. So we started walking. We ran across an apartment building, One Bryant Place, that had a basketball court on its ceiling:

Joyzee43.jpg

And the first time I'd seen the lights on the Empire State Building all night, red, orange, and yellow:

Joyzee44.jpg

There was a Chase Bank along the way that had their safe very artfully displayed behind glass. This thing was a mammoth.

Joyzee45.jpg

Very beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, just around the corner from that I looked up and saw Grand Central:

We explored down underneath, and as we headed down to the bottom floor we saw some guy sleeping in the corner:

And I decided to check out where the actual passenger trains come into the station. I really was amazed by the trains and subways in this city. They carry millions of people a day, on time, without fail, and yet the stations are so, so dirty and just awful looking. It's ugly. I guess it's too busy to be clean, but still, it's the sort of stuff I would avoid in my own city. Apparently it's perfectly normal in a place this big with this many people.

Joyzee49.jpg

After our ride back to the car, we started to head out. One street we passed and John freaked out, thinking he saw some weird car. He thought it was an Alfa or something, and I didn't believe him but I turned around anyway. We went around the block, parked, and walked out to find this:

Joyzee52.jpg

Joyzee53.jpg

Joyzee54.jpg

An Alfa Romeo Spyder. They never sold these in the States. I sent a picture to Doug and asked him what the deal was. He mentioned the license plates--they're United Nations Diplomat license plates. How bout them apples?

Needs moar dead Civic and RX-7 pics, yup

Great pics of New York though. Not somewhere I'd go, I can barely stand Orlando, but that's just the small town part of me talking.

I checked another goal just after we had pizza at Lombardi's, taking pictures of my car parked on the street in Manhattan.

At that point I was satisfied. I did everything I wanted to do. I partied, I drove through Times Square, I had a hot dog, I saw the city from the top, saw if from the bottom, rode the subway, ate the best pizza I've ever eaten, took pictures to show that my car was there, and got to hang out with John all weekend. I felt it was a successful trip at this point. Maybe that had something to do with what happened later on. However meager my goals were, I had accomplished them.

This is the last picture of my car intact, in The Parking Lot across the street from John's house:

I'm aware it hurts to post pix of your zombie civic, but the sake of our sanity, DO IT!!!!! :P

New York - The only place you need a pushbar on the back of your car

An Alfa Romeo Spyder Spider

👍 Though the spelling with a "Y" is the traditional spelling, the Alfa has an "I". Nice spot though, especially in the States. Gorgeous cars.

And yes, broken Civic photos now! I'm enjoying the story but pictures speak a thousand words :sly:

That night after I took The Last Picture in The Parking Lot I left for home. I stopped at Walgreens down the road to grab some snacks and a Monster. I got up on I80, but I didn't make it very far. The crash happened, I called John, I called the police, called dad. I waited a good 10 minutes sitting in the left median inches away from crazy traffic watching them run over bits and pieces of my car, some of them quite sizeable like my front bumper. The actual steel one. Some weirdo in an MDX parked right in front of me while I was on the phone, got out and pulled something out from his truck and drove off, lmao. Asshole. The cops eventually came, all 5 of them, and blocked the road while one pushed me across to the other side. My car would drive, but whatever, I'll let him humor himself and use the pushbar. John and his mom came by and he yelled something like "That's my friend" and the cop just told him to get off at the next exit. They loaded the car on a flat bed, I got in the back of the cruiser, and he dropped me off at Lowe's. I waited a little while for John to come back and pick me up, then we went to his house to relax for a little while.

I had to get home somehow. My dad and I settled on me flying home, so I told John we had to come up with a plan, like now. We found some tickets on Priceline for a flight leaving Laguardia the next day, Monday, at about 4pm. We came up with a ridiculous mass-transit plan to get me to the airport, but luckily his uncle agreed to drive me. After that we talked down to a nice diner, had some dinner, went back home and went to sleep. We had to get up early to get to the impound lot and gather all the stuff out of my car. This is what we found...

Here you can see the gash in my tire that the cops think was caused by a pothole, or highway shrapnel. It's pretty obvious how the gash got there though. You can also see how the wheel got ground down while it was locked up and dragging along the concrete wall:

This is clearly by far the best thread ever of all time. Except that he bought some stupid car instead of a Foxbody.

Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Its lucky that you are alright, could of turned out much worse.

Wow unlucky man, it was a good looking car but eh what can you do. If it makes you feel any better i had a rather large accident in november and had to spend a **** load to get it sorted.
Accidents happen man, just be glad your fine. Kinda feels good when you see how bad your car is and knowing you got out ok doesnt it? (Or is it just me.)

I appreciate the sentiment from everyone, but I'm not too worried about it. Really, if it was a ride at Cedar Point I would ride it. Then I'd get back in line and ride it again. The only thing about the crash that freaked me out a little bit was when the car started climbing the concrete median and I could see all those oncoming headlights. Exciting!

I'm going to have an exhaust-off once I get the Rex to see which one of these is louder. The RX7 is going to have to prove itself before it gets the garage spot.

Surely it could. Anything can be fixed. All the metal in front of the strut towers needs replaced, but I'm not sure how the impact on the front of the frame rails may have rippled back towards the rear. Though the engine and trans are still bolted up they've probably been moved back a bit, seeing as how I have to bang the shifter over into the 1-2 detent. The linkage has been bent up apparently.

Ouch that does suck. That tire gash looks nasty. Sorry to hear about that. At least there's an RX-7 coming from this incident.

It could be fixed but I gaurentee it would not be the same again, if you were to keep it id recommend repairing it as best as you can and using it as a stripped out track car...

Snap, dawg. Its a shame to loose that Civic, it was one of the iconic cars on the board. Still, looking forward to hearing more about the RX. Even though I'm generally indifferent to them, they're still awesome little buggers.

hey, my car's famous now! lol

Very nice pics, it was great meeting you that weekend!
Hey everyone, meet Heather, John's friend and not-girlfriend I wrote about. She's cool.

It was nice meeting you too, Heather. There may be a next time.

How in the hell did your rim fail like that? [Insert you have Enkei's, not Rota's joke]

Crazy things happen when you run into a concrete wall. I'm actually fairly amazed by their strength considering their cost-effective construction and very light weight. The important bits that keep it round--the spokes and barrel--are still in one piece.

Crazy things happen when you run into a concrete wall.

But still, I've seen accidents far worse than yours and the rims held up just fine. I've known people to jump over curbs at 60+ and the rims stayed intact just fine. Meh I guess there is physics or something behind that I can't/don't want to try to comprehend right now as it's been a long day.

Anyway, sucks to see your Civic destroyed like that but hey you got something else and it should be all good. And like others said, it could've been worse, you could've ended up dead...and then where would would be?

Ouch, that's rough Keef. We still need RX-7 pictures.

And I may be able to interest a friend of mine in your B16 if you're going to get rid of it.

That looks like a sizeable impact, Keef. Glad you're alright. Car's definitely not worth repairing - A hit like that will screw up more than just the front end of the car.

I has three questions.
-Did you pop the airbags?
-Is the drivers front wheel actually bent as well, or are my eyes playing tricks on me?
-When do we see pics of the Rex?

Looks like there are still plenty of good parts on an otherwise clean car, though...

Also, hello John.

That rim did hold up well against the concreate wall, you can see it impacted the wall pretty hard crushing the tyre into it (causing the rim to cut the tyre open).

Ah, I was wondering why it was photo worthy. I see them all the time here.

I find it strange that a United Nations Diplomat would be driving an old oridinary Alfa Romeo, he must really love it.

No, the airbags didn't blow. Never really occurred to me that they could have at any time after the crash, but they definitely could. I'll have to unplug them before I start working on the car.

Yes, the driver's wheel has a little bend in the rim. It could probably be fixed without hurting the wheel's integrity too much.

The plan is to pick the Rex up here in a few hours, so I might be able to put some quick pictures up later tonight after work.

Jay

Funny thing is that it wasn't in good shape at all. The right side wheel covers were pretty beat up, and there were scratches and scuffs all over it.
