So where was I? I think it was when John and I had just got done eating at Lombardi's Pizzeria (two pizzas = $72 of awesome) and we decided to take a not-touristy stroll down streets we'd never been. Cool.
One of the first stops I made was to take a picture of the only other idiot driving a lowered car through Manhattan:
I didn't take many pics for a while. I was caught up in the scenery at night. We were in the general Little Italy and Chinatown area, and I was amazed at how I felt perfectly comfortable walking down these strange, dirty alleys like I did it every day. The buildings were all grungy looking, there were papers and trash all over the wide sidewalks, puddles in the gutter, and it seemed like the parts of Dayton where people never go. Yet I felt perfectly comfortable. Apparently that's just how it is around there. It couldn't have been too bad--that dirty old red brick apartment building had a freakin' G-Class sitting out in front.
After a little while I looked up and mentioned that I thought we were in Chinatown. The fact that all the signs had Chinese on them was my clue. We soon stumbled upon a stairway that went down under the street and I got all excited. Riding the subway was one of the things I wanted to do, and then I remember that I also wanted to go visit Times Square at night. I asked John to find out how far it was on the GPS--a whole 3 miles. I suggested we take the subway, so we walked down and tried desperately to read the most confusing map I'd ever laid eyes on. John was being a little girl about the whole thing, and I eventually talked some sense into him. We're taking the subway, damn it, now buy a ticket.
It was nearly impossible to take a picture in the car. It just so loud and shaky, waving up and down and left and right like crazy. Pretty fun. If you've ever seen in a movie or something where nobody ever talks to each other, that's true. Nobody spoke a word the whole time we were on the thing except me and John. Talk about awkward.
We eventually got to the Times Square station which surprised me quite a bit. It was enormous, nothing like the little thing that we got on at. We had to walk a good 5 minutes just to find the stairs out of the thing. But once we did we headed for the lights...
There's MistaX down in the corner of this pic:
Toys R Us is awesome btw. Anyone who has an ad or especially operates a store in Times Square is awesome.
I learned that the Ball stays in the same place all year long until it's time to drop it again:
Stock market ticker:
And my favorite shot of the bunch, showing the people and the lights all the way up and all the way down:
I could have sworn that I saw on the map Grand Central Station was just down the street from Times Square. I figured we'd walk to it, explore, and get on the subway there and head back downtown to the car. So we started walking. We ran across an apartment building, One Bryant Place, that had a basketball court on its ceiling:
And the first time I'd seen the lights on the Empire State Building all night, red, orange, and yellow:
There was a Chase Bank along the way that had their safe very artfully displayed behind glass. This thing was a mammoth.
Very beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, just around the corner from that I looked up and saw Grand Central:
We explored down underneath, and as we headed down to the bottom floor we saw some guy sleeping in the corner:
And I decided to check out where the actual passenger trains come into the station. I really was amazed by the trains and subways in this city. They carry millions of people a day, on time, without fail, and yet the stations are so, so dirty and just awful looking. It's ugly. I guess it's too busy to be clean, but still, it's the sort of stuff I would avoid in my own city. Apparently it's perfectly normal in a place this big with this many people.
After our ride back to the car, we started to head out. One street we passed and John freaked out, thinking he saw some weird car. He thought it was an Alfa or something, and I didn't believe him but I turned around anyway. We went around the block, parked, and walked out to find this:
An Alfa Romeo Spyder. They never sold these in the States. I sent a picture to Doug and asked him what the deal was. He mentioned the license plates--they're United Nations Diplomat license plates. How bout them apples?
