London and England riots

And now for some good news.

I've been following a journalist on twitter who, for the last two days solid, has been driving around London collecting donations of clothes, food, kitchenware, toys etc from benefactors around the city and giving them to the people who've lost everything.

She's well worth a follow for anyone on Twitter, @Katie_Khan. Fantastic to see how many people got involved in the London ceanup and similar Manchester cleanups yesterday and today, too.

Did I hear correctly that a Scottish celebrity said this morning "Actually, this isn't the UK rioting, it's England"

Tit. He may be right but what was the need for that?

Hundred's of years of repression by the English is hard to take, but that is something for another time...

According to reports, the 'Zulu's' (football firm, for anyone not sure) are stood in Birmingham city center waiting for any trouble makers

It is, but that's hardly the kind of thing to go saying considering what is happening out there. Especially as it could very easily hit Scotland or anywhere else without warning.

True. But, the BBC (amongst others) have learned the hard way about failing to make distinctions between the Union and its member nations - Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have seen no rioting whatsoever so far, and so it's a tad unfair to say 'UK' when it is just England, for the moment atleast. I don't think any malice is intended - it's just more accurate.

Everyone I know in Scotland has watched the events in London and other English cities with a mixture of horror and sadness.. almost all of my mates and I have lived in England for years ourselves, and everyone I know has friends and/or family all over England. For people like us, there is no malice behind simply making the distinction that, so far, the riots have only affected England.

That said, some kid in Glasgow did get arrested today for 'inciting riots' on Twitter. I think he said something like "Greggs are putting up the price of sausage rolls tomorrow".

Maybe there more civilised ?

Edit to add.
Only joking. I don't want to start a riot in here.

Bloody opportunists - nothing like a bit of good PR [/cynic]

Nah, that's great 👍 Good old SCEE :D

It is clearly a good PR move and normally it would turn me off the gesture but after what has happened it's great to see any act of kindness...still good for PR though ;)

Cheers, I've added her but TBH my twittering has for the last couple of days has solely been scanning through #LiverpoolRiots to see if I was about to be set on fire. As it happened it became increasingly difficult to work our what was BS and what was genuine info. I've got my fingers crossed that as the weather is properly grim tonight there will be very little or no trouble later.

The cleanups that have been happening all over the country are a really good sign that normal people aren't going to roll over and lets the yobs own the steets plus it will be highly motivating to the emergency and council workers who have to deal with it. I heard on the radio this morning that people were out in Liverpool cleaning up from 7am so that they could help before they went into work, I felt a bit guilty for not doing anything myself really although it's hard to get to work on time any day of the week with two mini-me's to deal with.

:grumpy:

I'll have you know, we have literally tens of talented football players that are worth hundreds of pounds each. OK, most of them are English, but that's beside the point.

Apparently an 11 year old is going on trial! Eleven!?!? Think what you were doing at eleven. Looting shops and rioting? I don't think so.

Sat at home, playing with transformers. 20 odd years later, i'm sat at home, watching transformers!

I definitely wasn't that hardcore 3 years ago, and I'm still not now. Seriously the world is going a little bit loony if it's been confirmed you've been badly raised at that age...

Saw something weird on he way home tonight: coppers on buses! Well, two sat at a bus stop and tw on an actual bus. I'm assuming it's a "high visibility" thing.

I'm assuming there won't be much trouble here tonight. It's cold, it's blowing a gale and it's chucking it down with rain.

Well the rioters have definitely gone over the boundary that's for sure. And a lot of stores have run out because of them. :dopey:

Please do excuse me for those terrible puns. :indiff:

I should be watching England right now.

Ah, that's why the riots have stopped in London! They either think the game's still on or they're really annoyed their tickets to the friendly have gone to waste. Although the latter would probably be more likely to encourage rioting :boggled:

What's the score.

Could be a riot in Wales after all. Austrailia 2 Wales 0.

Edit. Zeta. Funny mate.

Oh you forgot to mention the ashes.

Arrghh quoted myself.

Of course! How could I forget? They'll organize a best-of-five gang fight between Croydon and Hackney next year with different venues for the fights :nervous:

Hopefully some of the older UK members might be able to help me with these questions.

Is there a particular decade that stands out as being a time of obvious social degeneration. Was there a particular influence or type of government rule which encouraged society to decline in the way that it has?

My parents seem to think that the late 70's for them was a time when they could see a shift in the way society itself was developing. In the 1980's (when I was born) my parents said they saw our area in Walthamstow becoming noticeably worse, year on year.

As with all other riots, all different groups take a chanse to do something. Its no lie that manny people are sick and tired of the government in UK. Poverty and unemployment feed this kind of action. Thats it, its simple.
