London Bridge/Borough Market Terror Incidents

It seems that it was three men who ran from the van at London Bridge to Borough Market. Armed police were in attendance during the last hour and "shots were fired".

Sky news reported witness statements saying both (3 and 5 men) for the same incident - stabbing of a women in a restaurant at Borough Market.

Sky are talking about 'conflicting' witness reports, I think it's going to be a little while before all the info can be sifted and the actual true course of events are confirmed.

Sounds like there's alot to go through from the 2 incidents....

Police have confirmed there has sadly been at least one fatality.
Sadly, more than 1 according to this report. Hopefully not.

I was near Elephant and Castle when it happened, could see loads of police cars heading towards London Bridge and a few more blocking off the road leading up to it. Some people were pretty tense on my Tube ride home.

Variously reported, but not confirmed:
1 man shot
3 persons arrested
4 persons remaining to be apprehended
20 someodd casualties

Sky just showed 2 interviews, one with a guy who says he witnessed 2 armed police officers open fire on a BMW 4x4 and a lady (who I think was a reporter) who said there'd been 3 arrests.

A friend in the UK is reporting that 2 of the dead were the attackers. I'll edit this post once I get a news source.

Where are you getting these live updates from?
I'm getting my news from Fox news HD TV, USA, which is associated with Sky in the UK.

They too are reporting explosions - possible controlled explosions or stun grenades is speculated.

There may have been two separate incidences of gunfire.

Thousands of people are caught up in this.

Huge explosion on London Bridge

I've seen no confirmation of this explosion on Fox or CNN.
However, CNN is running extended focus on a single image of man down wearing what appears to be a vest of canisters. At least 6 quart canisters, but not a "standard" suicide vest.

Sounds like it was a controlled explosion by the police.

It's 2 men down, each wearing a vest of some sort. The men seem dead and bloody. It's easy to see the features on one.

Police statement televised live on SKY:

3 attackers were shot and killed, but 6 people were killed by attackers..

And contrary to the claims/speculation made earlier, police don't believe anyone else beyond the 3 killed was part of the attack.

It's a pretty big group of terrorists then, no?
EDIT:

Seems there were 3 of them and no more:

Husband and wife Ben and Natalie said they were outside Borough Market when they saw people running away. Ben told the BBC: “I saw a man in red with a large blade, at a guess 10in long, stabbing a man, about three times . . . He was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground.”

Another witness told the BBC one attacker ran at people with a knife, shouting: “This is for Allah”.

Some of the knifemen ran shouting into the El Pastor taco restaurant in Borough Market and stabbed a woman. Witnesses said diners threw chairs and other objects at the attackers and drove them out.

Ten or so minutes later police arrived and led the 50 to 60 people out of the restaurant, with their hands above their heads. They broke into a run as soon as they reached the cordon.

The Met police confirmed its armed officers had shot and killed three men in Borough Market. It said the suspects were confronted and shot within eight minutes of the first emergency call.

Assistant commissioner Mark Rowley added: “The suspects were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later established to be hoaxes.”

Asked if the incident was “over”, Rowley said: “Our current belief is that there were three attackers but we have still got some work to do to be 100% confident of that.”

ISIS led?

Chatter on social media used by Isis suggested its supporters were claiming responsibility. One post in French on the official Isis news channel of the messaging app Telegram said: “Wolves are mobilising individually and attack the Crusaders civilians in response to calls from the Islamic State of targeting nationals of cross coalition.”

London Ambulance tweeted out a statement reporting that they have transported a total of thirty patients to five separate hospitals. Tweet went out at 10:58 EST, about 70 minutes ago.

ISIS led?

I don't think ISIS has any capacity in leading such attacks in Europe. They "broadcast" a wide message ("do bad things, here is some inspiration in case you need it") and then individuals or groups like this act on their own initiative.

That's also why it's so difficult to prevent these attacks, because there is no chain of command and no direct orders.

The worrying thing is I can't see any way the authorities can stop this from happening, bombs are easier to trace but any Joe Blogs can hire a van for £100 and go mad with a kitchen knife.

Exactly. No planning is needed in this kind of attack except to have possession of a vehicle and a simple weapon.

The question I wonder if we need to consider arming off-duty armed response officers. Perhaps it would provide a wider, more distributed response to such attacks. I'm not sure it's something the officers or force would support.

[EDIT] However, a simpler but long term solution is better segregation of traffic and pedestrians. Bollards everywhere.
