Well we figured out how to make the car pretty stable during practice. All you need to change is the ride height. Having a lower nose helps a lot with keeping it planted on this windy undulating track.

f: -22 r: -10

is what I used (as well as Forced and most of us) to great effect.

Yeah, it's exactly what you'd expect in GT5's goofball tuning.
Remember that ride height somehow acts backward in this game. You'd expect a lower front to create a positive rake and lots of over-steer like it does in reality and every other game. But in GT5 jacking up the rear end creates under-steer. With the lotus being so pointy the extra under-steer probably takes some of insanity out of the tail end.
Eeesh, that uphill right hander after the loop was nervous as hell in the NB... I'm fearing it in the Elise. :nervous:

The Elise is actually pretty civil through that corner since it doesn't take much steering input to get the car to commit. You can try to push it and gain a few tenths but on a typical race lap it shouldn't be an issue.

Brosif out! (And drunk) :)

The setup seems fine, I think it's more an issue of me needing more laps on the track.

Though it looks like I'll be away most of the day tomorrow. Have to help some friends move some stuff out for renovations.

I'll try to find some time tomorrow night, though.

hah you're awesome Pierre 👍 I need to get in a session with you sometime to steal your lines xD

Pretty much any downhill to uphill transition is real tough, for me at least. Turn 3 is the same way. The suspension gets loaded and then it gets loose.

Thanks Forced, Wardez, Mule, and Lapierre for your help earlier today in practice. After we all practiced, I put Bob on the car for a bit. I came back with a fully broken in car for some late night action.

I didn't change any of my settings from before. I am amazed at how much of a difference it made with a broken in car. I am consistently in the high 14s low 15s now. My best is a 14.5. I have a feeling one of the aliens might get a little ridiculous and post a high 13 qualifying. I guess we will see.

Hey man are you up to practice a bit? Sorry I didn't get to you earlier.

Well in fact, it would be cool to have you in practice session, but having MY lines is a big word since now many guys reach the mid 14's... I have only been faster than 14.5 twice, and it's because I changed the setup and it turned out to be really bad at tire conservation... So I must NOT forget to change it back between the qualifying session and the race lol!

So hard to have patience waiting for the suspension to react before jumping back on the power.

Very welcome Red! Glad you are flying now.

I am in the camp with Dr. Watson/ TnJf; my real world experience in tuning has proven very frustrating when coming to GT5. Some of the stuff translates, other stuff is literrally backwards, I.E. what you would do to the car in real life to make a setup change in one direction literally does the opposite when making the change in the game. This applies specifically to ride height, spring rate etc. Camber also seems to have no effect on ultimate grip other than a fine tuning balance tool....in my case running little camber <1 is faster than running 2.5+. And there seems to be no relation to tire wear based on camber (completely backwards), if anything there might be slightly better tire wear with less camber. Swaybar changes on the other hand do seem to have the desired effect. The biggest change by far I have seen is the ride height of the car. Want more grip in the front? Raise the ride height...LOL. This is the complete opposite of real life tuning, for many reasons, and goes completely against my own (pretty extensive) real world tuning experience. But hey, this is life, and ya need to adapt to be quick, regardless of the games imperfections, and tuning in GT5 is just another skill you need to learn to be competitive in non-spec series. Course, we could just make everyone run the fixed suspension and level the playing field...:) hehe. Still, I'm having fun thus far, and hopefully as I figure this stuff out I can claw my way back to the front. I'm in good shape now with the setup and run consistent 14.9's/15.0's with a setup than can run the times through 10 laps and very even tire wear front/rear. It's a great race setup (willing to share with anyone if they want it) but there is still another .5 I think in it by getting rid of some steady-state understeer. I think the maybe, just maybe, on a 100% hero lap that a 13.9 is possible, but I won't be doing that anytime soon and don't care to spend the time.

Also, for what it's worth, I don't think gearing has a tremendously big impact on performance, maybe a few tenths, as long is the gearing is close. Thank you Pierre - he shared his custom gear set with me last night and put it in; it was very similar to the stock "speed selected" gearset that I chose and netted identical laptimes. So just a suggestion for the guys still learning (as I am) focus more on the suspension settings (in particular the ride height.) There is also a lot of driveability that comes from the diff. Like Wardez/EERS said, the goal of getting this car right is just to make it drive-able and confidence inspiring by taming the rear end. I love the MR technique and prefer it to FR, but there is a lot of time to be unlocked, and more importantly, confidence and consistency by setting the car up right.

Thanks Forced, I appreciate the help.

I don't really understand real life tuning, or the tuning in the game. The two things I do adjust on every car is the ride height and the brake balance. For this car I am running -17,-10 and a brake balance of 7/3.

As far as the rest of it, I just tightened up the suspension a bit(compared to stock) and followed the recommendation earlier of .5/.5 camber. I lowered the LSD settings a bit from what was suggested, but don't really understand those settings yet.

As far as the ride height being backwards... You are right. Stotty actually made that observation a while back in the WRS forums. He was nice
enough to right an "article" about it and share the info with the rest of us. So yes - to get more grip in the front/create oversteer, raise the front/lower the back. For less oversteer/create understeer lower the front/raise the back.

Hey man are you up to practice a bit? Sorry I didn't get to you earlier.

Sorry I missed you Wardez. I got on at midnight, and by 1:30 a.m. I was too tired to continue. I have vball this evening at 5pm, but might get on when I get home, as my wife has an event tonight. I still need to put a lot of work into the WSGTC series as well, my NSX kind of sucks right now.. Or it could very well be the driver.;)

What a great guy. You shared a lot of info with us all in the practice room yesterday and gave us a time to aim for. If you hadn't set that time, I surely would not of thought it possible.

For the rest of you that haven't had a chance to be on the track or talk with Lapierre you are missing out. At the end of the night we were the only ones left - and chatted for quite some time. Not only is he sick fast, but a very nice guy to talk to as well.

I am stoked that I decided to get into this series. What a high quality group of guys!

Okay, so basically I just got a job, starting tomorrow, and for the next two weeks. The hours are 3-11 every weekday, so I wont be able to do Friday quali sessions during that time.

I've talked to Ponyboy, and he likely wont be here this weekend, so Wardez, can you handle Friday quali for me?

I'll be there in about an hour or so. 👍
And I see Tony is back. 👍

Sounds good. I am going to go ride my road bike for a quick workout then I will be back.

I got down to a 14.362 but my setup still needs a lot of work. Hopefully you and Pierre aren't too far ahead of me.

Tour de France on the mind, Bro? ;)

Here's hoping I can get a time that can get me into the race on Sunday.

You got some caching up to do... 0.061 seconds worth. :ouch:

Dapper
How much faster?

I did 1'14,286 with Tha-Ghoast (you may know him under the name of Drama-Kyd) and 10 minutes later I ran 1'14, with the guys here. My limit is not really far though.

Talking of which, man that is some great words Rees, I appreciate it a lot, I will continue to be the same, it's really fun to be complemented like that!

Tonight I'll be on after 10 ET, I can't miss each day's stage at the Tour de France!

+1 for LaPierre, he is a great guy :)

Personal best of 14.5xxnow, but with a 48.2 (or maybe higher) sector marker. I have done multiple sectors in the 48.0 range, and even a 47.91x, haha!!! I just keep ripping through the esses and almost losing it at exit putting a wheel in the dirt to drivers left...there is a 14.2, 14.1, 14.0 in this car for SURE! :)

Nick

i am definitely not going to be competitive this race. i am going to keep practicing but i can barely break 1:16 at this point

Yeah, this will most likely end up being my throw-away race. I've had that feeling all week.

Yeah of course I'll do quali tomorrow. Anyone that plans on qualifying Friday please say so. 👍
