it wasnt until SRS (the dud of a game) that i started using manual exclusively, and now i cant go back to auto. Using auto in SRS seemed to give you a huge disadvantage.

For GT4, If you are driving with all the driving aids on you might as well be driving with an auto trans car, because all it does is limit your control over the behavior of your car.

automatic till I get my DFP. then i will enjoy the whine of honda's and mazda's rev-happy engines when I'm tearing thru chicane.. ;) :embarrassed: :mischievous:

As Duke has said earlier in this thread. No point in developing habits now that will be very tough to break with the wheel. Better to get used to shift timing and what not now, rather then later.

I used auto in gt3 all the time. It was doable then. GT4 is different and I don't feel right using auto. I also don't like the view from behind like I used to use in games so I have to use the in car view. Only time I used manual in gt3 was on those time trial races but now I'm hooked on manual in gt4.

I have had the exact same experience as you. I used an auto on all the other GT games, and always used the view behind the car. I even gold all gold licenses with the automatic. For some reason though, GT4 just doesn't seem to cater to the auto or car view the same way. In GT4 I got silvers on all the license tests with an automatic, but had to swap to manual in order to get all golds. I've also changed to the hood view.

The car feels lighter and feels like I can brake better when using a manual tranny. I'd prefer to be able to focus on the track more by using the automatic, but as you said, you just can't seem to get away with it in GT4 like you could in GT3.

Manual all the way, never used auto. Auto is for Pu**ys. Parden my German. Thats just how i feel and if you dont like it, you can just go drive your stupid automatic 👎

Always manual since GT3. But I have to admit that I used auto for the Monaco Formula1 race in GT3 since I was loosing my concentration after one hour of racing

I'm very very very lazy. I bet you know what I use! I used manual for a few weeks in GT3, but got sick of making EVERY shift in enduros and such...

I'm in the same boat. I use the Auto, but I'm old & lazy as well
Well I wasn't gonna say anything unles pushed, but I'm also in the old & lazy brigade too. Cars, they don't make em like they used to you know. I've already found a major bug in GT4, the Triumph Spitfire starts 1st time ingame and never breaks down, I hardly ever saw our Spitfire running in the 70's. ;)

Paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
I'd love to have a steering wheel but unfortunately it's not possible at the moment so I have to use the DS2 controller. Hopefully my circumstances will be changing soon so that I can finally sort out a decent steering wheel, though if truth be known I'll be using the stick shift rather than the paddles. 👍

The time to switch is NOW, if you're planning on doing it. Don't wait until you've built up a lot of unconscious driving habits.

That being said, there are plenty of fast drivers who use the autobox. I prefer manual myself because I hate second-guessing when the transmission will decide to shift. The few blown shifts are worth it.

In Gran Turismo 2 I had the game for years and then when I thought I knew the tracks very well I started playing with manual transmission, golding licenses I couldnt have dreamt of golding them before. So it shouldn't be too hard to switch. :sly:

I agree with the majority here. Manual is the only way to go in racing games. You get complete control over when the car shifts rather than having to yell at the damn tv to get it to shift sometimes. You can stay in a higher or lower gear if you want. Manual = faster lap times. Even when I'm racing auto on a friends save (24hr Nurb) I find myself hitting L2 and R2. It becomes second nature after a little bit of racing. The transition from auto to manual isn't that bad either - all you really have to be able to do is watch the tach in your periphreal vision and shift when you see the red dot.

Exactly.. Been using manuel for racing games since I can remember..

Manual with slower cars that dont need many gear changes, and the benefits of manual gears are obvious and great.

Auto when I can't be bothered, when I'm learning the track/car, or when the car is so quick I would lose more than I would gain by using manual.

I notice in the poll there is no option for "both".... :grumpy:

I've tried manual, but I have very long fingers. Needles to say they cramp up after 10 laps of shifting so I usually just use auto.

Automatic since the beginning of Gran turismo: unable to drive and push L1-R1 (ou L2-R2?)...

But when I bought GT4 and the "Steering wheel' at the same time, I said to myself: "now, you have no excuse, you have to switch to manual"... and I did (even if I'm forty and lazy!)!

What a great change, it is lot more challenging too...

BTW: I always removed all the stupid and unrealistic Driver aids, on all the cars I'm driven...

That's interesting. I would think the best way to get to know a car would be to use a manual transmission as it puts you more in touch with what the car will be doing.

What cars would you say are too quick for manual?

manual! since GT1, it beats auto in every way. accel, decel, up hill. I set up my turns accoreding to the gear and rely very little on speed, after your in the right gear u can feel the corner out. everything about auto sucks to me, no offence to ppl that use it, just my opinion. not to mention with the faster cars u can get alot better start in 2nd gear no tire slip plus u dont have to shift as much. take the viper gts to the test course and use auto. then pick manual start in 2nd gear and u will blow your other ghost away. manual rules!

I get bored and sleepy driving my mom's auto car.. not to mention playing a video game... manual of course... I'll never drive auto if I don't have to... not even in a game.

Manual ffs! Although with the ultra-high performance LMP cars, hitting the shift points in the low gears is almost impossible...they go slow through the first RPMs and then zap to the rev limit bout halfway through the gear.

Case in point - did better with auto in the S-license Bentley LM test.
