Even with the smoothed out torque curves of the later games, the GT series still provides the best feedback of any game for MT, and also seems to be one where you feel like you're benefiting from it. In GT4 I do catch myself lugging occasionally on some cars, however. Usually luxury-type cars.

just gotta shift better, btw ppl that have trouble hitting L1 and R1 try setting it up as... R1 up shift R2 down shift seems easier lets my left hand concentrat on steering just an idea

I only use Auto in Licence tests. When racing, I always use manual trans. In real life, my current car is a 5-speed, and my previous two cars were manual as well. My old 2000 Celica GTS was a 6-speed. Now THAT was fun.

I also drive a manual for safety reasons. With an automatic, I run the risk of falling asleep behind the wheel due to sheer boredom...can't have that!

That's what I have done since the GT1 demo! I almost forget that not everyone does that! :D

Actually, I believe Andretti Racing had that as the default. For sure it was one of the limited number of "pre-approved" selectable configurations. It feels sort of like Campagnolo Ergo or Shimano STI on bicycles. (Of course, Ln/Rn is more like F1 wheel paddles).

Yea I have the same problem... getting tired while driving.

That's interesting. I would think the best way to get to know a car would be to use a manual transmission as it puts you more in touch with what the car will be doing.

What cars would you say are too quick for manual?

Well -from GT3 - things like JGTC, certainly any LM cars. I think anything that has more than about 500bhp - since they shift so quickly its actually a detriment to your performance if you screw it up.

Notice also that manual makes it harder to use the gear-indicator light. IN auto, you just brake into the right gear, turn in and hope for the best (not quite...). Manual, you have to know what speed you want unless you can flick the gears down quick enough and at the right pace. The no. of times Ive braked, and found myself bouncing off the rev limiter or just practically stalling is insane. Doesnt happen with slower cars - i think it maybe free-revving cars I have a problem with. Shooting up n down the rev range in an endurance race will do your hands no good at all.

Yea auto allows me to learn the behaviour of the car - my manual mayhem normally alters it such that I cant learn properly. I need a consistent car, and manual doesnt provide that. however, i gladly take manual for licenses, because thats a short enough dose to learn, and perfect in manual, and i find it easier to get golds.

Whoever said that changing up gear in a bend is a problem - why?? I do it all the time - no extra oversteer, no slower out the corner. And if it changes down - big deal?? Or just try holding R2? Manual is only good for when the CPU refuses to change down or lets the car bounce of the limiter for ages before shifting up. Any other time - not worth the hassle. I'd rather be looking where I'm going, not at the speedo/tacho; or straining my ears for that certain note that suggests I should change up.

Summary of your post: YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IN A GAME GOOD.

If shifting in a corner doesn't mess you up (in anything with a bit of power) then you're not driving the course as fast as you can (generally speaking). Take a decent REAL car out and get going good (i.e. fast as it can be taken) in a tight corner and downshift. Trust me, you'll regret. I've spun my car around doing this. Throws balance of the car WAY off.

And you don't need a consistent car, you need a consistent driver.

And great thing about manuals, you use em to slow down quicker and always be in right gear. EASY if you KNOW HOW TO DRIVE.

when I first tried gt4 at a friends house, manual was way easier then in gt3 for some reason, so I told myself that I would only use manual, and then I got it, automatic was standard, and I was so excited, that I got into the habit of using auto, and now I'm stuck in the auto way. well, there's my story

GT3 I used manual about half the time, but with the new, more involving physics in GT4, controlling an F1 car around the nurb while having to manually change gears is just not an option for me, i dunno if i just dont have the motor skills of the rest of you, or i just havent gotten used to it, but i guarantee id give most of you a run for you money on any track, using auto, lap times wise

i do wanna learn though, ill practice in those slower races, when i get to them.

From what I can see, the main argument people have against using manual transmission is that they can't concentrate on their driving line due to constantly having tokeep tabs on the tacho / gear selection etc. So here's one for all those who use manual regularly... do you actually look at the tacho? I know I don't (barring maybe down the straights to watch the needles swinging round). My point being, manual eventually becomes far more intuitive than auto ever could. I rely more on the sound than anything else, it really does become second nature - and once you get to know the track and car you know exactly how fast you are approaching a corner, what gear you're in, what gear you need to be in and, consequently, how much speed you can carry through the corner. And this is coming from a guy who only started using manual transmission in GT4:Prologue (and who isn't very quick at all) 👎 :D:

Auto for controller
Manual for wheel

But sometimes, when I start driving a fast car for the first time with the DFP, I use Auto until I get used to the car.

However, after driving almost every NSX in the game, I not once used an auto on a NSX from GT1 to GT4.

All my NSXs in the GT series stay manual. 👍

I used automatic for a long time in racing games untill gt2. Then i got into gt3 and started competing with my older brother and i started to realize that getting used to manual transmission was worth it.

Now I damn near have a panic attack anytime revs drop 2-4k below redline depending on the car :scared:

I also upgraded my pc a while ago and i've gotten into sim games that require a clutch. And that makes driving even more immersive.
........................................
as others have said, there's no reason to use auto unless you are injured in some way, really old, or really young 👍 .

Shame on you if your too lazy to shift during endurance races in gt4 :)

the game is autoclutch and all you have to do is press the damn shifter up and down.

I use auto... i dont freak about it changing on me because i hold the gears so much. I hold them mostly for turns and exit speed, let it redline more than the auto really would, its good enough for me.

I used auto through GT2 and about half of GT3. Then on these forums, this arguement was brought up, and I made the swtitch immeadiately. I didn't find it to hard as I drive a manual IRL. It seems so much more intuative to me, all you have to do is catch the flashing light in the corner of the screen. Now that I have a DFP for GT4, it seems all the more necessary.

Yeah when I first got GT3 I was a lazy auto person but after reaching 80% I thought stuff this and so I restarted and only used manual. Since then I've been a manual user ever since. The game becomes so much cool and rewarding to play.

manual! It's not fun when you have to do all the speed modulation with just the brake, and it's annoying when the thing shifts in the middle of a turn when you have the throttle cracked

manual! since GT1, it beats auto in every way. accel, decel, up hill. I set up my turns accoreding to the gear and rely very little on speed, after your in the right gear u can feel the corner out. everything about auto sucks to me, no offence to ppl that use it, just my opinion. not to mention with the faster cars u can get alot better start in 2nd gear no tire slip plus u dont have to shift as much. take the viper gts to the test course and use auto. then pick manual start in 2nd gear and u will blow your other ghost away. manual rules!

Very true. I've always done this in rally races. If you are having trouble in the dirt or snow with spinouts, you can just upshift and drive in a gear too high. That softens the hit of the power and makes the car much more controllable. I've taken my 490+ hp Subaru around the ice courses torching the computer car. There is no way on earth I could have done it with an automatic.

Good point, i dont play rally much but u can use the same thing on tarmac with a slippery car. btw since it was asked. i use the tacho and the sound. i look at the tacho when i have time to do so. any1 that redlines hard braking...... brake more b4 u down shift redline to hard u will let those tires slip.
