I used to always use auto in every game, including GT1, 2, Colin Mcrae, and Need For Speed. I tried manual a few times but couldn't get the hang of it and always couldn't really figure out how to make it work well. However, when I picked up GT4, I hadn't played any racing games for a few months, and for some reason I just felt the urge to use manual even though I've never really used it before and I've never driven a manual car. But I actually got the hang of it pretty quickly. After doing the B and A license, I'd say I was as good as any other person at it (in the game, of course.)

I'd say it's a lot more fun to do manual in GT4. I mean, obviously the game is not centered on pure speed, or a lot of action. The point of the game is technical driving, and when you're going around in an automatic it just takes that element out of the game. If you've using just a normal controller like me, all you're left with is holding the X button to go and pressing square to stop. Not extremely exciting if you ask me. On the subject of manual being faster than automatic, in the game it's not really true. In real life it's true, but the game's automatic shifting is pretty much the same as manual except it shifts for you. It doesn't really have many flaws and almost always puts you in the best gear, so I don't think it's really a time disadvantage. Just detracts from the experience.

havent read anyone elses post so im going to post my thoughts of why a manual is better than an automatic in GT4.

First off, automatics are really boring(remember these are my thoughts), all your doing is applying gas, brakes, and steering. As whereas a fun manual you get to shift the car yourself, and it may sound harder and less fun, but its really not once you get a hang of it. second, autos take a while to realize it needs to downshift when exiting a turn. Third, some and most cars potential is extracted when going past redline, which can only be done using a manual. Most of these apply to real life, the only time id ever consider using a auto in real life, is if you have a high-power car made for the straights, or a soccer mom.

Manual - to feel more realistic.
AUTO- to beat the game..... hope that help... :D

LOL, KissBoy. Ok: You're a retard! ...j/k: You have to go into options and do it that way.

Anyway. I guess I'll try and lump this into this thread since our net of moderator(s?) apparently wouldn't let it through.

I'm really curious to hear from some Gold junkies who use all buttons for gas accel.

Yeah, you bottom-dwellers! The lowest of the low. You have your wheel-men (top), then you have your DS2 people who use the dual-stick method (so-so), and then you have the really prehistoric old-skool diehards who can't get on with anything other... than BUTTONS!!!!

You know who you are. X for gas, square for brake. D-pad for steering. Hehehe. Or maybe you have L2 & R2 for brake and gas. You mitigate wheelspin in a high powered FR car by simply utilizing MT. They said it couldn't be done, but you went and achieved all Golds and completed all Time Trials in GT3 with your button-mashing genius.

I still remember hearing about the guy (Japanese, I think?) who was top-ranked in the world in GPL for a long time. He actually got that good just using his keyboard. LOL! (Ya can't get anymore on/off digital than that!!) I also remember that I just never could get comfortable with DSM (dual-stick method). And then I remember when the Dreamcast came out. And F355 Challenge.

Holy God, I was spoiled forever for TRIGGERS!!!!!1one

So you can understand why I look forward to Forza Motorsport, where I can use those triggers. But damn. You know to this day, using DSM on my DS2 feels all wrong. Even though in license tests I'll sometimes begrudgingly use it, I still revert back to buttons & D-pad the first chance I get. It just feels more natural.

i know we are all allowed to our opinions, but if you think that manual actually makes the game alot harder then you are a noob. 👍 and have really crappy motorskillz

.Unless you are injured in some way, no excuses for using autmatic. Unless your driving the Mclaren Mercedes SLR

:nervous: injured? by what?

im actually suprised so many people are admitting to useing automatic gears, thats like admitting to playing the game on an easier difficulty :scared:

Dude. Games are for fun, lest we lose sight of that fact. Where's the shame? AT makes me no less of a man. ;)

I play my games the most fun way for me. Simple 👍

for what its worth, i have always used manual in all the gran turismo incarnations (and also the in car view, no dashboard)

curiously, when i play other "less serious" racing games eg: nfs u2 etc, i often used auto and external view

i'm just odd, i guess hehe ;)

I use buttons for gas/brake and the D-Pad for steering and have all golds in GT1, GT2, and GT3 ...

I can't stand the analog stick for steering ... Sure, it's much easier to make small corrections, but it's so much slower turning in ... In GT2 (the only GT game I personally own), I practiced using the analog stick for several hours and still couldn't get within a second of my personal best using the pad ...

So where do us disabled drivers fit into your equation, old or lazy?

Being old and/or lazy is a disability...so i guess only disabled people use auto....

ONLY JOKING.....please dont take offense....my buddy's dad is disabled and he has this awsome set up on his steering wheel for the brake and gas...(he's wheel chair bound, and cant use his legs)...he uses automatic ...i guess if he were to use mannual it would be like driving a model- t
....Anyway he has this killer syclone truck that he uses for rally cross at PIR...he's good too....he could teach me a lot.....and im glad you brought up that point....

besides what fun is stick when you commute in bumper to bumper traffic...free your hands from the stick and eat a burger...(this is where i make my off topic comment go back on topic)....

manual has it's uses....me i usually prefer stick especially in gt4...

but i wonder whats used in pro races more....
drag=stick
rally=stick
f1=?
nascar=?

F1 uses semi-automatic (paddle shifters) ... WRC also uses a similar setup ...

I think NASCAR still uses a conventional manual transmission, but I don't watch NASCAR, so I may be wrong ...

I have always used the auto and buttons.....I have a hard time to do the drifting and braking while downshifting say nothing of nitros hits to hook up in corners...is this harder if you are in manual? :confused:

Exactly. F1 drivers use paddles to shift their cars through. I mean were you gonna stick a big transmission that you see in Lamborghinis at?

However, Ferrari and Maserati have developed this same technology so now, in many Ferraris and Maseratis, paddle shifting is how you go.

Maserati belongs to Ferrari

No they do not.

Maserati and Ferrari both are part of the Fiat group, so they are both owned by Fiat.

The Fiat group consists of the following brands:

Abarth *
Alfa Romeo
Autobianchi *
Ferrari
Fiat
Innocenti *
Lancia
Maserati

* = Dormant brands

I prefer manual, of course. When I started playing GT2 I was using AT, but I forced myself to switch and I'll never go back. It just feels so incredibly lame using AT now, like the game's less interactive or something. I highly recommend everyone to use MT. Start with a slow-ish car, preferably with a 4-speed tranny (on real-life automatics like the Sunfire GXP). MT starts to feel passive after a while. Have fun. ;-)

Same with me! I don't think it's any harder to make small adjustments by tapping the D-pad because it's designed to work as well. It's not like as soon as you press on the D pad your tires are instantly turned completely. And using the buttons might be harder to control partial throttle and partial braking, but it's certainly not too hard to do, and I like it because for me it doesn't require as much fine, careful pressure as the stick does.

i use manual for every racing game

actually there's sometimes, when i playing 2 player battle with my friend and accidently press 'automatic', i just dont know how to drive when driving an automatic car

in real world, i just hate driving auto cars as well

I used to prefer manual in earlier Gran Turismo games. I think I switched to automatic mid way through the GT3. Now I drive only AT, but I'm pondering a change(again).

Does this seem weird to you guys? I always have and always will use manual for every Gran Turismo, yet whenever I play another racing game (arcade racer because nothing tops GT as a sim) I find it hard to use manual, so auto is what I choose.
I find it weird:ill:

I use manual, i am the same as you - i find other racing games hard to adapt to manual, i think its because Gran Turismo is more realistic, the revs dont shoot up falsely like most arcade racers, and leave you at the top of a gear unknowing either as in GT you can see the redline and a shift light!
