I think people are getting carried away by the guy driving in the video of Sierra. He makes hardly any mistakes, it's not gonna be this easy to drive. I think people will struggle to get gold for at least a reasonable amount of time. Probably without the massive moment where he loses it he'd have got gold. But you can see he knows the course.

It also looks like he's using the nitrous button a lot?

It is now early morning in Japan on Wednesday 10th September.

If we are going to get an update today, it will be later on in the day - usually in the afternoon if you are an aussie or Japanese!

I didn't forget new Zealand, there you go!

He keeps moving his right thumb over R2, it's not a comfy natural position for flipping gears unless you have massive hands.... so what else would be on that button?

High beam? I've been in rooms where other players are constantly flashing their headlights anytime they get near another car.

Regarding the number of cars, it would be pretty easy for PD to exceed the usual limit in a point-to-point or 1 lap race, as you could never have all the cars onscreen at the same time, at least not if it was the usual staggering of the cars event.

In simple terms, if you reach the lead car there's no way you would drag the cars at the back along with you. It doesn't need to render too many cars at the same time, and in the replay it's not rendering anything until you focus on a specific car and its own opponents nearby. The rest of the time it is just data plotting the progress of each car. I doubt you can efficiently block all the cars either so the whole field catches up, though it's a fun idea.

People need to get away from this idea that the whole race is actually happening "visually", even if you aren't watching it.

Who said otherwise? But that block all the opponents thing, I'm going to try that!

I suspect you'll find that there's only about 8 opponents who ever turn up to your little gathering.

The time extension system might make this impossible to witness anyway, so we may never find out.

I forgot about the time extension portion so I guess that's out the window. That sucks, really wanted to see if the AI just disappear or the game crashes.

Perhaps I didn't read all the posts but some folks still seemed puzzled by the number of cars in the clip, and questioned what would happen if you focused on another car in the replay. And the misconception that the replay and indeed the race itself is somehow played out in full like real life still seems pretty common :)

I just counted 12 opponents on the GT5 AMG Academy Intermediate lap (the suspension model is so goofy now).

I think the 22 cars is achieved with a trick. Either the limit is in storing the visual data in memory, so they can have lots of "simple" opponents that are simulated with more detail the closer you are to them, and only those closest have their models loaded (and they're streamed in, lowest LoD first). Or they just recycle the models, put new stickers and colours on them and use the same "simple" AI trick. Or, they just delete them outright when "out of range".

Rendering isn't an issue if you reduce the LoD, which can be effected simply by spacing the cars out a long way.

It'll be interesting to see, especially if you can shift viewpoint from car to car in the replay...

This is what I was saying earlier; since this is a special game mode where every AI car will never be able to meet at one point, the larger car count could make sense if PD is harnessing efficient data compression. Considering that they're already using adaptive tesselation, it wouldn't surprise me at all if at a set distance all visual data would be removed entirely, leaving just AI algorithming, physics, hitbox, and in-game coordinate data. A lot of processor space would be freed up with this method, and it'd only really be used for this game mode, as any other modes would allow 20+ models to appear in one place, and obviously the PS3 would explode if it tried to do that.

I was actually going to bring up the idea that they actually just delete and re-spawn the super-distant cars, but it was late and I was tired, and I forgot to add it. However, I still lean more towards the first idea, because I believe we saw that you could watch the replay - if that's the case, it would seem that you'd be able to follow the other cars, which wouldn't allow the de-and-re-spawning of AI. However however, I could be wrong, and it may limit you to following just your own car, making the re-spawning method the reality.

It may partly be because I'm so badly wishing for this feature to be expanded to the other large tracks available in the game, but I dunno, it's still really all predictions up till this point...

There's criticism of it not being tight and twisty enough, but I think PD has tried to give us a track that a lot of people have asked for..

There's been a million comments about jumping in your 60's/70's/80's sports cars and going for a blast.
That sort of car is built for flowing corners, top down/ windows open so you can hear the symphony from the exhaust, and taking in your surroundings.

GT has plenty of technical "racing" tracks,
But aside from racing, tracks like the Nurburgring boring as bat**** as far as scenery and just cruising goes, plus the camber on the road for most of it makes it tiring to just drive on in the above manner, it's a race-track.

Take off your racing suit, slip on a silk shirt and a pair of bad 70's aviators,
fire up that old Fezza and take it easy....

I will do the challenges for sure but the first thing I will do is drive on it in a relaxing pace, just enjoying the ride.

Then I will look for a good cruise lobby. There better be one. I repeat: this track will be cruising heaven. I just can't wait.

According to my count, this guy passes 13, but there were at least 2 further up the track he didn't get to.

That is not the one I was talking about, but it looks like the last one with the SLS is the same number of cars. Seems like there were more when I ran it but then again that was almost 4 years ago ;)

On a different note. I see a few posts were people are complaining about it not being tight and twisty. I for one would not want a tight twisty track that is this long. A long track needs to flow and allow some speed while trowing some stuff in there that will bite you along the way.

Looks like a fun track to me.
