I wouldn't trust a word the Daily Mail says. They're known as the Daily Fail for a good reason. Yesterday they tried to convince the world that Lewis Hamilton was performing backing vocals on a pop song. Today, they're clearly more interested in the gory details of Schumacher's accident (of course there's going to be blood - head injuries bleed profusely) and throwing about unfounded speculation that his neck injury might have been afected.

Yes, what's above basically. Only get info from non-tabloid crap.

Please get better Michael, my all time sporting hero! Feel worried sick, there should be an update in approx 1 hour.

It looks bad, I'm pretty worried. It makes me think about our royal prince Friso who also had a ski accident, went into a coma and died more than 1,5 years later. Hopefully this won't happen to Michael. Get well soon!!

There was a difference as prince Friso was struck in an avalanche and was under the snow for a long time without oxygen to this brain.

Anyway i agree with the above, british tabloids are more concerned in spreading sensation than the actual truth, they are like the fishwives of the newspaper world. Let's wait and see if the kaiser recovers...

Belgian newspaper says there is a press conference in 25 minutes.

I didn't compare the accidents, I only said that this accident made me think about the other.

Unconfirmed reports from the French media suggest Schumacher had a second operation last night.

Schumacher confirmed to have bruising and bleeding into the brain, and will go into medically induced coma. No prognosis given.

His doctors have confirmed that he only had the one operation. He has bruising on the brain, and a bleed into the cranial cavity. He will go into a medically induced coma for the next 48 hours.

Press conference taking place now and by what the doctors say things do not look good for Michael

Doctors cannot express themselves on his future.

He has intracranial pressure and several oedema’s and legions. He remains in a critical condition.

He remains in an induced coma and induced hypothermia.

It sounds like that it was a bloody good job he was wearing a helmet otherwise we would have been talking about him in a past tense.

Best thing they can do for him at the minute. Thank god they got him to hospital quickly.

Professor Stephane Chabarde said: "The helmet wasn't enough to protect him completely but it really did help. We see a lot of head injuries like this."

Professor Payen: "We have very good medical procedures and we did actually treat him very quickly and give him what he needed very quickly."

Professor Payen added: "We are in constant contact with his family that are by his bedside. At this moment we don't see he is going to need a second operation."

His injuries still sound too damaging... Its freaking me out that a hero to me has now suffered serious brain damage, the most vital thing in the human body... I have not a clue what will happen.

Win this battle Schumi and don't let it be your last!

It may be the hardest battle you've been in but you can win this!

It's a common complication of head injuries. And bear in mind that the hospital Schumacher is at likely sees a lot of these injuries, given its proximity to the snowfields.

The fact that they are putting him into a coma now and not operating any further means they are quite confident they've done everything they can. It reminds me quite a lot of Richard Hammond's crash, and although it took a while for him to recover, he is doing great now. Let's hope the same can be said for Schumacher.

Let us hope that in 2015 we'll see him not only recovered, but so fit he'll be back in an F1 car, racing his heart out.

I've just read on Autosport that doctors agree his fitness should help recovery massively. Although it's bad, he's in the best place he could be, getting the best treatment possible.

That seems relatively positive, especially coming from a doctor 👍

It's not a good condition to have, but cutting a hole in the skull to relieve pressure is a pretty standard treatment for this sort of thing.

When you cut yourself - say you slipped while chopping vegetables or something - the blood flows freely as it has somewhere to go. In the case of an intercranial hemmorage, it is a problem because it's bleeding into the brain, and most of that space is already taken by the brain itself. It doesn't take much blood to start putting pressure on the brain, which is where the real danger lies. By cutting a hole in the skull, doctors can temporarily relieve the pressure while they search for the source of the bleed.

Also, it's worth nothing that any patient with a traumatic brain injury is automatically listed as critical. Schumacher would not have been admitted to hospital in one condition and relisted as he deteriorated - he would have been listed in a critical condition as soon as it was suspected that he had a brain injury.
Yes that's what I said, I think from British English to American English there's some subtle communication that's a bit less literal. Well lets hope he pulls through okay.

Oriol Servia tweeted that Cristiano da Matta survived a similar head injury (he hit a deer in his champ car) so there is lots of hope for Michael.

I was looking at the survival rates for these kinds of injuries, and they're quite high if treated immediately - which is what happened here. I have every bit of hope he can make a good recovery from this.

EDIT - Just read up on Da Matta's accident, it's nigh-on identical to this.
