Garagefather's Recap:
Finally a podium in this '06 SC430.......
I have to admit that this car is a challenge to say the least. So much so that after Nurb GP's 5th place finish I couldn't talk about it due to my disgust over the performance of my car and myself. I qualified second and kept pace with Montalvo but the tire wear along with the close racing inevitably led to a mistake that killed my race. The Shumacher S is no place to screw up.
The '06 SC430 is easily the slowest car I have ran after running the Calsonic GTR in season 1 and running both the '06 Arta NSX and the '08 Petronas Tom's SC430 in testing at GVS. I easy surpassed my best laps times while running at GVS with them for 10 lap trial runs. If I actually invested the time to really get the tune dialed in, the disparity between the performance of the cars would grow. This made me feel a bit better knowing that my performance, or lack of, wasn't entirely due to my lack of skill.
The '06 Bandai Direzza is a great handling car and if it is driven within its limits it can perform consistently. The problem is that in order to compete for a podium, the car has to be pushed. If tire wear was off, I am confident that I could regularly find the podium but the car eats tires even with a modest pace and the lap times fall off fairly quickly as compared to all the other cars I have tested. This forces me into strategies that are devised simply to get on the podium with absolutely no expectation of competing for the win.
While not being able to compete for the win is discouraging, I have accepted that and now plan my race to give me the best opportunity to finish well, knowing a podium is a victory for this car. I had considered asking for a car change because of all the open spots but now want to stick it out and see how well I can finish in the points for the season, with this car. A personal challenge I guess?
My challenge to make the podium was aided last week by the absence of the points leader, who would have undoubtedly made the podium given his past performances which would have relegated my finishing position to P4. I would like to believe that if I had a better car that I could challenge him for the top spot but I have to admit that his performance is pretty outstanding considering he is running the '08 Denso Lexus which isn't considered to be a great GT500 car. Having run the Toms Lexus, I can say the car performs nicely when tuned but I don't believe it is as good as the GTR by any stretch when it comes to speed in relation to tire wear. Montalvo can really save the tires and still produce some seriously fast times and that is why I believe he is able to put the SC430 on top. Great skill and patience make for a formidable foe.
It was nice to see the Calsonic GTR back on top in race 3 and Skeng ran a great race. His pace was good the entire race and he ran relatively mistake free. I believe he has a great chance to pull off his second win at Tokyo, especially if he finds the speed and patience to run a one stopper. Good luck.
I look forward to the next challenge at Tokyo R246 and hope that this fast paced track won't penalize my car further. I fear the higher average speeds and long front stretch will be a hindrance to both the '06 and '08 Lexus but that is yet to be seen. The guys in the GTRs and NSXs can take advantage, especially if they can run a 1 stop strategy competitively. Last season I ran a 1 stopper and the strategy worked well and I expect the winner to do the same this year. I know I will be doing everything I can to run a 1 stopper but only to the point that it doesn't jeopardize a good finish. So far, my only attempt at a 1 stop race fell flat. If my tire wear is too great or my pace too slow to conserve tires, I won't hesitate to stop twice in order to finish well.
