Okay I have tried and tried... But I can't get the first split down to 1:49, I keep getting 1:50.xxx. In this session I did get ONE I:49 but then botched the jump and ran off course.

From there is just grows and I am not sure where I am loosing time. I get through most of the diffcult sections really well but the spilt where some people get 1:33, I get 1:34.xxx if I am quick (obviously not that "fast") and 1:35.xxx if I made some type of mistake.

The long turn before the 1:07 ish split I suppose I am not getting off there fast enough, but I am exiting on the curbs so I don't understan that one either, best split there today 1:09.242.

On average I am catching the SL55 several turns after the Karosel

I am going to try adjusting my steering but have been driving without aids at all for a while now they slow me down....

Don't fight the turn, slow down on entry and drive out of the turn. Trying to turn this beast fast will cost you big-time.

Slow in, fast out.

If you're braking through the turn just to stay on the road, then you're entering the turn to fast, and your exit speed will suck.

After several tries I managed to do this mission today. The trick is to not take much grass, as it unsettles the already unstable car and means it slides. Be careful around the other cars and make sure you don't get any penalties. It took me about 4 or 5 proper goes before I got it, you just have to be patient and learn the best line through each corner.

The trick is to be past the third car before you get onto the long back straight before the final couple of corners. If you haven't done that, you won't beat the mission.

very hard. i am very good at the ring' but i can't even get close. the sports tires really piss me off and that big lump of a car understeers badly. will get it though

Yes... understeer... It's never too much to stress it again: "slow in, fast out", especially the slowest corners.

Some of the fast ones, you can and should "overdrive" over them.

best time ive had is around 5 seconds off. and that, by freak coincidence, was my second try. i think i was having a good day though :(. i tried it again a few days after. was miles off flying all over the place.

is that away from the pole position car or 5th place

HA!

Done it at last, PAL though with 9'12.989. (with a 5 sec penalty)

My tip would be, buy the car then run a few practice laps on comfort tyres.

Worked for me!

Whats the expected time needed to win..?

By the size of this thread i thought the SLR would be a terrible car. Yes, its about 15 feet long and weighs as much as a sedan, but it can manage its weight and size surprisingly well.

I purchased this car with the intent of practicing for M34, and took it straight from showroom to track no mods. My best time (for 2 in the morning) was 7:23. Am I on the right track?

If you have the NTSC version, you need to cut about fifteen seconds from that lap time. You have a 123 second gap and need to finish in approximately 9:13, counting the gap, taking into account the time needed to pass the moving roadblocks you'll encounter in the mission. However, if you have PAL, you only need to shave off a few seconds because you have a 115 second gap with a slower finish time for the lead car. And watch out that they've somehow set up the car to where it doesn't drive as well as it does by itself in practice.

It took me quite some time to win this mission; I did not cut grass nor wallride, but I lost control trying to pass the SLK 230 at the Schikane and spun through the grass, hit the wall with the rear of the car (hence no penalty), and go on to edge the Gullwing by .028 at the line. I have not beaten it since, although I haven't tried much.

Not a bad time, However you said with NO MODS on the car. You should put on some Comfort Tyres and see what you can do. This will give you a better idea on how this car is under M34 conditions.

No, the mission car is on sports medium tires. Comfort tires would be a nightmare! :scared:

yeah comfort tyres would be a nightmare, but it would help you to learn that braking early is the fastest way around with this car. Slow in = Fast out.

I tried this mission for the first time in a long time yesterday. Didn't do too bad for just 2 attempts.

First attempt I was like 35 seconds behind when the 300SL passed finish line.

Second attempt I was about 15-16 seconds behind when 300SL finished the lap.

I made a small number of mistakes on second attempt which probably cost me 5-6 seconds.

Overall I didn't think the SLR was too difficult to drive. I had just earlier in the night raced on Nurb in Forza 2 with a Saleen Mustang with 600hp/650tq and 3000lbs with traction control off. The SLR was not too far off from that Mustang. :dopey:

Sliding all over the place. However, I had fun with the car. I just pushed it in corners, sometimes sliding sideways, but the car still appeared to be in control and wouldn't snap out on me, it would just slide predictably.

I'll give this another try tonight if I have time. Hopefully I'll pass it. I just need to cut some time here and there.

My US Version has had the lead car finish in the 912's for the last 5 attempts I've made... very frustrating.

I was wondering if it had to do something with lawnmowing or wallriding vs clean laps, but it doesn't look like it.

Anyway, back to the Ring... More waiting awaits...

Have A Great Drive!

*yes the key is to slow in fast out...plus i'm using the ntsc version means faster lapped gullwing...so after almost 50 tries i've make i found out the u need a wall ride on the "carousel" and lawn mowing on the chicane....

-on more tips...some corners favours curb riding and make the slr easier to control and behave accordingly.... but patient is a MUST :D

Mission 34 Finally Complete

I didn't keep track of the # of attempts (I stopped counting at around 15), but it's probably close to 100 over the last 4 days, and around 18 hours of gameplay.

9'12.859" (-0.610") {USA, DS2, MT}
Not a clean lap, of course, but I'll work on fixing that later. For now, my thumbs need a rest.

Have A Great Drive!!

I know this was hard, but not as hard as everyone says :D. I won using PAL in 9'13.110 (which won by 3.249 seconds). The trick is not to drive particularly hard, but to stay on the track! I won this on the first try after 3 weeks, somehow...

The PAL mission is easier than the NTSC version by quite a bit.

My story in accomplishing Mission 34 is one of perserverance despite average eye-hand coordination and discouraging split times. I use the NTSC version of the game, G25, auto tranny and no R2 trick. I practiced for numerous sessions with an SLR McLaren in free run until I could hit 7:10 with some frequency, and a low of 7:04, while occasionally trying the mission to see if I could hit under 1:50 at T1. When I hit 1:48.5 at T1, I focussed entirely on the misson. My winning run came unexpectedly at the end of a long day, as I had begun to wind down with a pint, and the run did not seem at all plausible until the very end.
T1 1:49.647 Grasscut Hatzenbach, good no-curb launch from Hocheichen.
T2 1:40.839
T3 1:32.026 Grasscut Adenauer Forst.
T4 1:19.736 Ran wide, scraped fence after Miss-Hit-Miss, but pressed on.
T5 1:06.239 Good launch over Exmuhle, wallride Bergwerk.
T6 54.804 Wallride at Mutkurve, but did it poorly.
T7 38.761 Passed SL 65 entering wallride at Karussell, grasscut Hohe Acht and overshot pavement, used lucky wallride escape. What a hamfist!
T8 31.416 Passed the SL500 after Brunnchen.
T9 25.211 Took a slight grass detour after Pflanzgarten II, but pressed on.
T10 14.007 Passed the 190 E coming off Galgenkopf.
T11 5.596 Realizing what was possible, now kept it neat and tidy. Took the Kompressor going into Tiergarten.
MOV -0.017, winning an easy drag race from the SL300 race from the last turn.

The replay was embarrassing, with a gauche, maladroit, brutally over-the-top display of curb hopping and dirt tracking that only Joey Chitwood could be proud of. But I'll learn to live with it.

I've discovered a new way to keep me occupied in GT4, albeit briefly: to complete all the missions OLR-cleanly. I have not yet managed that in M34, although I have managed a run free of AI contact and with no cheating. I went off track a couple times, once on my own from screwing up a corner and once in the last corner before the straight when the 190E got in my way. But it did not cost too much time and I went on to win by a quarter of a second. This was my fifth attempt or so, and I was close the previous three times (after figuring out to brake very early) but always managed to make a mistake late in the lap. Anyway, I'm confident I can finish this mission with no contacts and two wheels on the track the whole time. If you're quick enough, all the cars can be passed in convenient places. 👍

Edit: Done all but this one. I think it will require a lot of time to get right, so I'll tackle it tomorrow.

Edit 2: Got them all! This was the hardest, simply because it's so hard to stay on the track at a fast enough pace to win (it was closely followed in difficulty by 13 and 14). I had caught up to the Gullwing by the end of the straight (first right kink) but decided I would crash if I tried to pass it there, so I followed it to the final stretch and then passed for a 0.8 second victory.

So i guess now it's MY turn to b!tch!

Jeezis crist this one is hard..but it's within reach. I'm at the point now that i know exactly how i should be taking every corner & straight. The hard part is getting a perfect lap.

I got real frustrated last nite. Closest i could get was like 13 seconds. So i coughed up $601,000 and bought an SLR for practicing. Notched the ASM off and the TCS down to 2, and raced my ghost. I'm not as frustrated now...i can catch up to the 5th place car just after the Karussel (instead of on the longest, main straight like i was last nite).

So my best time tonite so far has been
+8 ish seconds. :dunce:

I'll eventually get it.

Dude, if i had the PAL version, i woula passed this by now!

Parnelli, keep at it! I know it seems real hard now, but it just takes a bit of practice and you'll eventually smash a perfect lap, and you should overtake the 300SL just before the last right-hander onto the pit straight. I did mine on my 4th attempt, but it helped I was with PAL, but the fact I completed it with 3.4 seconds to spare, easily ahead of the '54 Merc, shows that its possible, even for you inferior NTSC'ers ;). Keep trying buddy, you'll get there soon. 👍

Thanks for your help Parnelli on 11. Not cracked it yet. Do you want me to send you a copy of this in PAL to help ya?:)

Yeah, man, i've almost been that desperate! :)

Ha! I woulda beat PAL version by well over 3.4 seconds by now. I'm not saying this to brag, i'm saying it cuz i'm so ready to be DONE with M34.

For the record, i am cheating. I admit it. A couple grass cuts...that's it. No wall-riding, tho. Closest i've come so far is just over 4 seconds. I'm almost there....i figure if PAL version is several seconds (13, right? i forget) easier than NTSC, i'm allowed a couple grass cuts. :indiff: So there!

Go for it. I now understand the frustrations of these missions and how addictive they can be. Rooting for ya:tup:
