Attempt #1 to get an official explanation of this phenomenon:

Thank you for writing us.

As much as we would like to address all of your questions, there are certain topics that are simply out of the scope of this department within Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). You have reached the Consumer Services Department within SCEA, and we handle all general inquiries for our PlayStation(R) family of products, warranty and repair information, installation and troubleshooting, general corporate business inquiries, PlayStation(R) Underground(TM) Club Membership inquiries, and third party software referrals, just to name a few.

Very specific questions on any particular product (e.g., manufacturing process), programming details of software or hardware, 'reasons or beliefs' on why a product did or did not include certain features, personal opinions, and personal contact information for developers, publishers, and other company employees, are some of the topics that cannot be addressed. Also, there are certain topics that we may not be able to address due to the fact that they are confidential and proprietary to SCEA.

Additionally, due to the complex nature of this industry and its products, certain information is just not easily available. You may be able to do some thorough research on your own at the local library, internet search engines, and at academic institutions.

If you have further questions regarding this message, please refer to your email case number:2820628.

PAL time good enough to win NTSC?
Just subtract 8 seconds from the NTSC winning time:
9:12 - 8 seconds = 9:04
9:13 - 8 seconds = 9:05

Getting down to 9:04 or below needs a lot more work in PAL. That also stands for the assumption of the same level of the physics.

The AI cars are still in different places (when they are overtaken) when you do 9:04 in PAL than they are in NTSC with 9:12 time. So to be on the safe side you better make it to 9:03's as I did. :D

.

Sorry, not good enough. The real difference (11 seconds) has been posted several times in this thread.

Of course the AI cars are in different places. You get an 8 second head start! Try waiting 8 (or 11) seconds and see what happens.

i dont mean to be a post whore but does the dfp make this mission a lot easier. Im using the standard ps2 controller :)

yeah, actually it does.
The ring is exponentially easier to navigate with the dfp.
I just got mine, and have used it for ~2 hours total... the first lap of the ring i could already see an incredible improvement in driveability.
I'm not saying "OMG its mad faster"; just alot easier
the main hasslte of getting around the ring with the ds2 is dropping a wheel off the track and spinning out.
because of that i know i found myself being a bit apprehensive around the edges. which reduces your cornering speeds because your turning angles are steeper, not being at the extreme edge.
with the dfp you have so much more fine control of the car, so you can comfortably get right up to the edges, and use all the pavement available.
Another thing thats easier, is I find i can clip apexes much more reliably without wonking into the kerbs.
with the ds2 i would have a hell of a time avoiding the inside kerbs, because you have no control of your turning arc once you start it.
with the dfp i only hit the ones i want to.
now the ring is such a pleasure... all the frustration is totally gone.
the force feedback makes it much more visceral on the 200mph bumpy sections as well. 👍

edit: and this is coming from someone with >7 years of DS granturismo practice.

But 8 seconds is enough.

I know that in PAL the winning time needs to be 9:15 - 9:16, but that's not the question.

The question is:

What total time I should get in PAL so that my actual driving time from the start line to the finish line would be the same as the actual driving time of a winning run in NTSC?

Total time needed to win the NTSC mission = 9:12
Actual driving time in NTSC is 9:12 - 2:03 = 7:09 (subtract 123 seconds wait time of NTSC)
When the actual driving time is 7:09 then the total time in PAL is 7:09 + 1:55 = 9:04 (add the wait time of PAL)

Or simply subtract 8 seconds from NTSC time.

Those 3 or 4 seconds more (causing the 11 or 12 seconds you mentioned) come from the fact that in PAL the leading AI car is slower than in NTSC. But in this case those seconds don't matter. It's the NTSC time which a PAL driver should chase.

This reasoning (and maths) is correct. On the US board there is a replay thread where replays run by Mr.pot and myself are. Mr.pot is a NTSC player while i am PAL.

His complete time was 9'13.078
Mine was 9'05.015

Our two actual running times are within a tenth of each other.

7'10.078
7'10.015

While neither run is perfect mine is at least on the track for the whole lap so i won't put anymore effort into the mission than i already have.

As i know it was an arguing point at the US board i thought i'd mention Mr.pot passed the 300 SL just before the line while i pass him half way down the straight. He was 13 seconds behind when his time came up after crossing the line. He should have only been 11 seconds behind, but once i passed the line he stopped trying and ran 2 seconds slower than normal.

do you guys use the dfp or the controller to beat this. Im using the controller and am 7 seconds off. How much time difference will there be if i use the dfp.(mine should arrive anytime) :)

I ran mine with the DS2 controller. I have the old GT3 wheel (LDF) but don't have anywhere to set it up so i haven't even considered buying the DPF. One day i'll build a cockpit but that'll be in the GT5 days.

To answer your question. If it helps at all, i usually run better times with the wheel than i do with the controller. Hopefully you'll find the same thing happens.

This is the most goddamn rediculous thing ever. Even if you try to practice in the world courses, its still not going to be the same. The car is just TOO goddamn loose. I even put the traction control to 3 and turned the ASM and other off as well, and it STILL doesnt feel like the mission car. The best i have done is -13.1 seconds without wall riding or loopty looping, or whatever the hell anyone else does to get a faster friggin lap.

This mission is horrible...and i feel sorry for my DFP if i smash the hell out of it.

Are you a NTSC or PAL player? The reason i ask is that where you pass the opponents will be different. Either way there are link to replays for both on this website just go to mission 34.

The PAL version is my run. I hope that watching this helps. If not post or PM i'm willing to help in any way i can.

It's not only the time you need to make up in ntsc that makes it harder than pal, it's also that overtaking is made at harder places (karussel, and right before the long straight for the 190e, which means that you need to pass him cleanly and fast if you want speed in the straight)

OK, this is all getting a little bit silly now. I'm still getting nowhere, not even close. I think the best so far was 18sec behind. I've studied Daan's replay and i do appear to be quicker through the corners.... so why on earth am i getting nowehere. I'm not even close to the 190E by the start of the long straight.

I've tried the 'pedal to the metal' approach which invariably results in a horribly messy crash on an eversoslightly mis-judged corner. The 'nice 'n' smooth' approach simplyain't damn fast enough.

This is really starting to frustrate me! AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH

If i knew how to, I'd upload a replay for comments (feel free to pm me with instructions).

I think the key isn't in the corner speeds but the speeds with which you exit the corners. I once calculated that 5 km/h faster speed out of Bergwerk shaved several seconds off the lap time. The same applies to the Galgenkopf before the Döttinger Höhe.

I thought it would be impossible too but after practising for a week I finally learned how to drive smoothly but fast. Then I made it. This sounds stupid, but keep trying. 👍

I've come the the conclusion this mission is utterly impossible for the average gamer. We don't all have cockpits or wheels or have time to spend months perfecting technique. Some of us just enjoy driving games. That used to be me, I used to love driving games until this mission. The odds are stacked way to high on the side of defeat, an over-powered car, crappy tyres, absolutley no room for error (in fact no room for anything other than absolute perfection), it all adds to a mission that is impossible and has now removed any pleasure I got from GT4. I now want to throw my PS2 out the damn window.
Ever wondered if CDs burn? I'll let ya know, cos that's whats gonna happen to my GT4 disc (and the PD office, if i can ever find where they are)

Calm down man... I sure takes pratice and time but the feeling you get when you pass that 300sl is just awsome and the nissan r89c you get is quite fun too. After you pass this mission you really feel like you became a better driver. and don't burn PD's office until at least they finish GT5.

Just ease off, you have the PAL version (as I do) and you're using the DS2 (as I do). I even used the automatic gearbox when I completed this mission with TWO 5-second penalties. It's far from impossible. :)

From when GT4 came out in the UK,up until last wk id been on the 'Ring about 5 or 6 times. I dedcided to get some practice on the track with an m3 gtr. Moved on to the GTR race car and after a wk practicing about twice a day, if that, my best lap is now 6.04xxx. Hated the track b4 but u jus need to learn it to get the mission done. Managed to do mission 34 on my 1st attempt this mornin 👍
Thank **** 4 that!!!

Trust me dude I know what you mean. I am damn good at this game but just not good enough on this track Im worse then you at this the closest ive gotten is 26 se behind so i havnt even past a car yet..... :dopey: but i was like 40 sec behind a couple of nights ago and im sure ill pass it its just going to take some practice I guess alot of practice in my case so dont feel bad there is someone out there worse then you.

run the 24hr @ nurburgring enduro for practice.
i've already beat the NTSC m34 and was confident that I was good at the ring... fact is, there is always more time on the ring to be had. I'm only 11 hours into the race and still taking chunks out of my best lap. (even though the car certainly has crap oil and a tweaked chassis after > 1000 miles of constant abuse)

after a-specing the 24hr you should be able to whip m34 in less than 5 tries.
+ you'll not only get the r89 for m34 but a formula1 car as well from the enduro.

another perk of the enduro, on the first grid the best car (r34) does ~7'20 laps and pits ever 4. So you can whip him with the SLR, giving you even more precise practice for m34.

Glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was quite a good driver. I've done the Nurburgring in 5.54 with the CLK GTR, de la Sarth in 2.49 in the same car, I've even got Tsukuba down to 0.43 in the Formula 1, which if the best lap times on this site are accurate (which I doubt somewhat) ain't far off.
I guess, this one's got me beat. Will no doubt keep trying though.

ps. apologies if my last post was a bit over the top - it's just very very very frustrating. i know some of you guys are trying to help, but ''i did it with xx secs to spare, just take it easy'' isn't really that much of a help.

Just a thought. I'm currently on 91.8%. I've done all the missions (except 34 obviousy!) all the manufacturer events, endurance, special conditions etc. Surely M34 doesn't make up the final 8.2%. Am i missing something???

I'll make this my last mission in Gran Turismo 4.. And since I still have the extreme and endurance races to tackle i might take longer..

We're just trying to say that there is no single way to master this mission, no one can teach how to be good at the 'Ring, the success comes with experience. :)

Well, I'm only 25.1% through the game, but I've decided I'm going no further until I beat mission 34. I've been working on the course over the past few hours, and here's what i got so far:

+ 52.947 - All over the track, first time giving it a try in the car, and wow it was sloppy, tons of offs, and tons of penalties.

+ 39.835 - All over again, mainly at the end and after Arembergkurve, still too many penalties.

+ 38.214 - All over AGAIN at Arembergkurve, losing about 5-7 seconds there alone, with 2 360s because I had a tire on the grass at the braking point, ended up in the gravel pit. Lost lots of time at Adenauer Forest too. Starting to get the start to just before Adenauer down well. Still losing alot of time in many corners, trying to push the car too hard.

+ 28.543 - Getting there, still all over at Aremberg, coming in too fast, but lost time mainly at Eschbach.

+ 26.769 - Off yet again at Aremberg and Adenauer, just can't get the speed down quick enough without losing tons of time. Still taking about 3 penalties per lap.

+24.035 - Adenauer again causing me problems, but almost got past into 5th until I got too aggressive at the end, went through the apex, and took a penalty.

+20.969 - Aremberg and Adenauer not causing problems now, got the first 2 checkpoints mastered to +1:42-1:44 second deficits, as low as +1:49.9xx at the first checkpoint. Passed into 4th at the end of the long straight, crashed again because the slipstream launched me, braked late, finished 5th

+18.295 - Very consistent lap, got 2 penalties toward the end, finished 4th.

+ 21.093 - Bad bad line at Brunnchen to Eiskurve, lost lots of time, and took a penalty at the very end.

+12.711 - Much cleaner lap, had a slight off part way through, could have cut off a second or so at the second checkpoint, and could have gone much quicker at the end, rear ended the 190 at the very fast right hander near the end, then hit him again afterwards, so 2 penalties there.

Haven't improved upon that, it's getting late, been really getting great times through the first 2 checkpoints, sub +1:42 at second checkpoint, but I'm still losing alot of time from the long backstraight, until just after Karussel. From there on, I'm not bad, just losing atleast 8 seconds total through that middle section, where I should be passing the first car. I'll update as I give this another go tomorrow night. I'd be thrilled if I was able to get it, and I think I can give it a good shot.

might help you find out the pacing and see where you can pick up some time.

I checked out the splits on the first page, and for the first 2 splits, I'm right on, or actually ahead by up to a second. Through the next 3 checkpoints, I seem to be losing most the time.
