If you could drift in GTR2, you know you either played that game way too much, or had a lot of skill. :P

Perhaps wasn't "According to Hoyle" drifting, but it was controllable (and big) oversteer. Forgive me but I'm not a fan of drifting, for me it is somewhat akin to synchronised swimming or gymnastics. Technically impressive and I can respect the skill involved, but not a proper sport. I think Ernest Hemmingway got it right when he said "there are only three sports, bullfighting, mountain climbing and motor racing, all the rest are games".

I'm not trying to be ass but it would be great if you'd elaborate a bit on the problem you find with GTR and GTR2 (GTR Evo as you may already know is developed entirely by Simbin, not Blimey Games). I'm not familiar with the first GTR but GTR2 has its wart and one of them being that it's tire simulation is quite poor especially compared to LFS or rFactor. Probably why you can't quite execute a proper countersteering hence drifting is downright impossible. After all this game is almost 4 years old and that's why with SHIFT, SMS clearly said that the physics engine has been worked from the ground up. If this was EA who said it, I wouldn't give it a second thought. There's a great interview with Ian Bell from SMS on Drivingitalia and one on AutoSimSport. It's in Vol 5 Issue 1.

You hit the nail on the head. The tire physics were my biggest complaint. I also own GTR Evo (play it all the time) and no the problems have not been entirely fixed. Another reason I am not convinced. They always say, "this time we've done it!", and yet plenty of issues remain. Now, every Dev team does this to some extent, but I haven't seen enough improvement throughout the GTR series that tells me this new project is going to be any better. Although, on paper it does look to be a better game (although far less sim biased, which I'm not a fan of).

I was about to say something until you corrected yourself. You definitely cannot properly "drift" in a GTR game. There are a few drift mods that change the physics a bit to make it easier, but even they don't really solve all the problems with the tire code.

Still, great games for racing, if you can look past some of the physics flaws.

;)

have you tried power & glory 2.0? it's definately possible with that...

Yep, I have. Still not really what I would call a good controlled drift. You really would have to completely overhaul the tire code to make drifting controllable and well...... fun, in a GTR game. Not that drifting is necessarily what you'd want to do in such games anyway. Yet, a good simulation should accurately simulate how a tire reacts to the road (ala LFS, Rfactor (to a much lesser extent) and iRacing). It's merely a bonus to be able to drift, in my opinion.

More exotics in the screenshots.:( The F1 looks good though, looks better with the aero kits IMO, ala F1 LM edition.

Some, think kind word would be driving, with all aids on, but both parts together make a full lap around the Nordschleife ;)

I hope that incessant gear-whine is toned down a little, or is there because there is some sort of racing dogbox installed. It's both annoying and unrealistic for a roadcar.

Looks very nice. It's going to be really disappointing if the physics turn out to be too arcadey, as I'm starting to be hopeful about this game...

The whole point of the game allows for you to turn a road car into a race car. Swapping the stock tranny out for a race one will obviously be 1 of the mods.

I gotta say... I'm highly skeptical of this new NFS game. I'm sure you folks can understand that it isn't without good reason.

I like the audio and video, that looks great. The thing that's concerning me in this video is how fluidly the front end wanders back and forth. I realize part of this is the driver (who sucks) and part of this is the camera (which sucks IMO). But really... take a serious look at the way the front of the car wanders on the road.

Another concern here is the way the car slides. Did you folks take note of how very easily the slides were recovered? It seems as if the game wants you to slide and and recover, slide and recover and do this corner after corner. To me this seems quite a bit like the last 6 NFS games, and this is NOT a good thing.

I can't fairly judge this game since it isn't out yet, but I'm not too impressed with what I've seen. I'll give the game a fair shake when it does come out but after what I've seen... I'm going into it skeptical.

if you look in the lower right, you can see some sort of stability assistance light flicker when he starts to slide. he was obviously playing with aids on... not sure. we'll have to wait till demo

With aids on and from the loud clicking noise is obviously from either a 360 or the PS3 controller thumbstick(s). None of the video except the recent ones at Gamespot (with R35 GTR and Lotus Elise which gave a promising glimpse) gave any true indication of the game's physics (potential). I'm less skeptical although I'm not expecting iRacing or rFactor calibre physics but one the will clearly challenge any console racing sim to date.
The track do look good although I see less detail than the GT4 version- some of the turn has less camber than the real thing (especially at the beginning of the track). It's very much like the version GTR Evo came with.

If you're basing it on the fact that it's a NFS game, than I would strongly suggest that you read some of the earlier post. While the gameplay will no doubt bear some of NFS past game, the physics and its engine are not of EA or Black Box (NFS past developer).

since this guy is driving with the controller, i can only assume that he isn't driving in pro mode , and developers clearly stated before that to drive properly in pro mode one would need a steering wheel. I think this game looks very promising, and it will be much closer to sim then arcade, and it will help me reduce waiting for Forza 3 and GT5

I don't think we can judge the game's physics by this video. You see ABS light flashing under braking, SC flashing when the car goes sideways, TCS flashing in acceleration.

Why doesn't EA publish videos of proper driving with a steering wheel and no assists ? This is something I don't understand ...

I have been skeptical the whole time since announcement and after the Nurb video I am even more skeptical, both the physics and track.

I am just glad they're releasing a demo so I can sit down with a hands test before I think about buying it.

I realize this, but cars should not be recoverable from a near-sideways slide regardless of whether aids are on or not.

As I mentioned in my post, I've read about the game. I know the physics engine has been handled by the same team as GT Legends and GTR2. That doesn't change the fact that this is a NFS game. I don't know about you, but I've noticed a common trend with the last 6 NFS games; they suck if you're looking for simulation.

Because this is Need For Speed. Even though the gamed changed to get more simulation than before, it's still a NFS game. The videos shown will be seen by the mainstream gamers/audience, not hardcore gamers who enjoy hotlappping on the Nürb w/ a G25 and no aids.

They mainly have to please gamers who liked the past NFS games and not scare 'em by showing a game that looks too hard for them ;)

First goal is always the same : SELL ! :sly:

i must say, i disagree with you, it think when you put the game on pro mode it's going to be totally different.

First goal of any game is to sell, so it's pointless to bring this up, even GT5 and Forza 3 top priority is to sell, sell and sell

Well the trueth is that for every 1 guy that enjoys driving with aids off and simulation, there is 20 guys who prefer a more arcadish game. So obviously any company who is out to make money will make sure the game also apeals to average Joe. Doing anything else is suicide from a marketing point stand.

Look at a game like Ferrari Challenge it is overall the best simulation aviable on PS3. but it hardly sold any copies besides to a few fanatics, and some die hard ferrari fans. Compared to crap games like GRID, other NFS games, Motorstorm and so on who all sold very well.

Anyway back to the Topic. Personally i think the video's looks kinda promising, at least we are going to get the Nordschleife. and hopefully the game will have some prober physics when set to sim mode. But only time can tell.

were talking about NFS here, not gran turismo

also impressive that you can judge sound from a low quality cam recording :P

Gran Turismo has been just as bad so far.

It's not really a quality thing that i'm worried about. I'm talking about the squealing sounding exactly the same no matter what he does, so it almost feels like the tires are squealing through the entire video. In real life different amounts of steering create different loads on the tires, and therefore they don't just make a generic "eerrrrrrr!" sound every time. This isn't drifting that they're showing, it's the Nurburgring.
